Several years ago we showed that prostaglandins (PGs) are potent radioprotective agents. To investigate further the potential use of these compounds we employed quantitative measures of murine hair loss and regrowth to assess the effects of PG administration before multi-dose fractionated radiation exposures. We describe a newly devised explant culture system employing rat neocortex in which neurones migrate in a fashion similar to that seen in vivo. Using neocortical explant culture we have demonstrated an effect of ionizing radiation on neuronal migration at doses as low as 10 cGy together with a changing pattern of expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM. A case of juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma of the pituitary stalk is reported. The patient presented with diabetes insipidus and growth retardation. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was useful in diagnosing the lesion. Although the tumor could not be completely removed by surgery, radiotherapy was effective and the residual tumor disappeared 6 months after irradiation. The patient's condition has remained stable and no recurrence has been observed by MR imaging in the 4 years since radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: The study evaluated the incidence and severity of brain stem myelopathy occurring after radiation exposure in a cohort of patients who received external radiation exposure for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

LEC strain rats (LEC rats), which have been known to develop hereditarily spontaneous fulminant hepatitis 4-5 months after birth, were highly sensitive to whole-body X-irradiation as compared to WKAH strain rats (WKAH rats). A rate of lipid peroxidation, content of biogenic amines and cyclic nucleotides were studied in various brain structures of 168 rats under conditions of microwave irradiation within 24 min at 46 mW/cm2. Total irradiation of animals was shown to result in distinct inhibition of monoaminergic activity of brain, especially of hypothalamus, in impairment of metabolic reactions, in exhaustion of the lipid antioxidative system of brain cortex and in stimulation of the contrainsular apparatus functions.

We quantified the perception of teratogenic risk in women attending the Motherisk program for counseling about diagnostic radiation in pregnancy (n = 50) and compared it with a control group of women exposed to nonteratogenic drugs and chemicals (n = 48). Four hundred fifteen patients with early-stage cervical carcinoma were explored via a transperitoneal approach for radical hysterectomy at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania between January 1, 1960, and December 31, 1985. A retrospective analysis of the results obtained with curative radiation therapy in a series of 205 patients affected by early glottic cancer treated from 1970 to 1985 at the Florence University and Hospital Departments of Radiotherapy is presented. Of 77 patients with supratentorial Grades I and II astrocytoma diagnosed from January 1975 to December 1984, 66 were treated with postoperative radiation therapy. The patients received a tumor dose of 5000 to 5500 cGy in 180 cGy fractions, five fractions per week, over 5.5 to 6 weeks. Overall actuarial survival at 2, 5, and 10 years was 71%, 55%, and 43%, respectively. Progression-free survival at 2, 5, and 10 years was 69%, 50%, and 39%, respectively. A case of angiosarcoma of the skin of the breast is described in a woman 7 years after a primary breast carcinoma was treated by means of lumpectomy and irradiation. On mammograms, the angiosarcoma showed redevelopment of skin thickening and increase in breast density. Clinically, the skin showed patchy discoloration.
