67Ga scintigraphy, using a 67Ga accumulation score, was compared with serum lysozyme (LZM) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) levels in 34 patients with biopsy-proven, pulmonary sarcoidosis. Serum LZM and ACE values varied between 1.0 to 21.3 mg/l (mean 4.3 +/- 3.4 mg/l) and 33 to 146 U/l (mean 69 +/- 26 U/l), respectively. Normal values were found in 26 and 35% of the patients. It is possible to evaluate the activity of sarcoidosis by means of 67 Ga scintigrams and radiographs. In known sarcoid with lung involvement, the scintigram can differentiate between the granulomatous and fibrous stage. The granuloma, which is reversible and requires treatment, must be distinguished from fibrosis, which causes permanent damage. We have treated 68 thyrotoxic patients with Graves' disease with a single daily dose of 30 mg methimazole until they were clinically euthyroid and their plasma thyroid hormone concentrations were within normal limits. The peculiar characteristics of 35S lipoic acid uptake by blood red cells in breast cancer patients were studied. The rate of 35S lipoic acid uptake by red cells in cancer patients was much higher than that in healthy female donors. The difference was less significant in cases of acute mastitis or benign tumors. The increased uptake of 35S lipoic acid by red cells may prove instrumental in the diagnosis and, probably, therapy of breast cancer.

Four hundred and twelve patients who received radioactive iodine for thyrotoxicosis were followed up for periods from one to three years by postal questionnaire. Hypothyroidism was detected in only three instances, and, despite intensive efforts to trace subjects, 41% of them were lost to follow-up because of either failure to participate or change of address over three years. It is apparent that a postal questionnaire is an unsatisfactory method for following up a Melbourne inner-suburban population over a prolonged period.

A survey was made of thyroid function tests on 1,153 patients screened for thyroid disease during a two-year period in a Geriatric Department; 13 percent of the test results fell outside the normal range. Of 88 patients who showed above-normal results, only 12 presented with clinical features of thyrotoxicosis.
