UNLABELLED: A standardized osteoporosis alert in fracture radiology reports boosted osteoporosis care from 17 to 57% in 500 patients. This low-cost, scalable intervention bridges a critical communication gap between radiologists and clinicians, substantially improving secondary fracture prevention after fragility fractures.
BACKGROUND: Fragility fractures in adults aged 50 years or older are sentinel events for osteoporosis, but post-fracture evaluation and treatment remain inconsistent. Radiology reports are a scalable point of clinical communication, yet conventional fracture reports often

BACKGROUND: To treat flexor pollicis longus (FPL) muscle function loss, the 4th flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) to the FPL tendon transfer is preferred as a reconstruction method. Various complications can occur during transfer. However, median nerve neuropathy has not been reported yet. We present a case of median nerve neuropathy caused by irritation of suture knots of the 4th FDS to the FPL tendon transfer with a review of the literature.
CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old male patient presented with paresthesia along median nerve distribution of right hand after tendon transfer. He complain

A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled, feasibility and dosing study was undertaken to determine if a common pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF) treatment could moderate the substantial osteopenia that occurs after forearm disuse. Ninety-nine subjects were randomized into four groups after a distal radius fracture, or carpal surgery requiring immobilization in a cast. Active or identical sham PEMF transducers were worn on the distal forearm for 1, 2, or 4 h/day for 8 weeks starting after cast removal ("baseline") when bone density continues to decline. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone

The exact and adequate management of diaphyesal fractures of the forearm is necessary to ensure forearm motion. Unsatisfactory treatment can lead to loss of function and disability of forearm and hand movement, resulting in severe patient morbidity. Since the rotational and angulatory stresses at the fracture site are the superior factors which influence the outcome of the forearm fracture healing after surgical treatment, the implants must fulfill some general prerequisites including high biomechanical stability, less invasive surgical approach and adequate biological features. However, less

The study aimed to evaluate the reliability of the intraoperative extended tangential view (ETV) in assessing the reduction and fixation of the dorsoulnar fragment (DUF) during the treatment of comminuted distal radius fractures (DRFs) with volar plates. A retrospective review included 26 patients who underwent open reduction and volar locking plate internal fixation for AO C3-type DRFs with DUF between March 2023 and January 2024. Each patient received intraoperative ETV fluoroscopy and immediate postoperative wrist CT scans. DUF reduction quality was classified simply as excellent (anatomica…

BACKGROUND: Distal radius diaphyseal-metaphyseal junction (DRDMJ) fractures in children often require surgical intervention due to the unique anatomical characteristics and high failure rate of nonoperative treatment. However, the choice of internal fixation remains a challenge for pediatric orthopedic surgeons. Traditional fixation methods, including plate and screw fixation, crossed Kirschner wires (K-wires), and external fixators, have drawbacks such as extensive local trauma and the risk of physeal injury. This study evaluates the clinical efficacy of antegrade elastic stable intramedullar

BACKGROUND: Varus posteromedial rotatory instability is a typical pattern of elbow injury that involves fracture of the anteromedial facet (AMF) of the coronoid, as well as injuries to the lateral ligament complex and the posterior bundle of the medial collateral ligament. Some authors support the idea that subtype II AMF coronoid fractures require fixation to restore elbow stability, but this topic is still an issue in the literature. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical and radiologic outcomes of arthroscopically assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) of AMF fracture

BACKGROUND: This study is the first to test Friberg's equation's (Vt=V0[e]) accuracy in predicting the residual angular deformity in pediatric distal forearm fractures.
METHODS: Angular deformities from distal forearm fractures in 50 children (mean age, 9 y) were retrospectively measured on follow-up radiographs once healed and compared to extrapolated angles at respective follow-up intervals from 2013 to 2015.
RESULTS: The predicted and actual angulations from 120 radiographs (mean follow-up, 3mo) showed that the mean predicted angle was similar to the measured angle in the radioulnar plane

Distal radial fractures account for up to 18% of all fractures in patients over 65 years of age, and osteoporosis is a predominant factor in these fractures. Fracture treatment may include closed reduction and casting/splinting, external fixation, and open reduction and internal fixation.

The dorsal approach allows better central screw placement along the long axis of the scaphoid compared with the volar approach in managing acute scaphoid fractures. However, it is unclear whether the dorsal approach leads to better clinical outcomes than the volar approach. This meta-analysis compared clinical outcomes, including the incidence of nonunion, postoperative complications, overall functional outcome, postoperative pain, grip strength, and range of wrist motion, between the dorsal and volar percutaneous approaches for the management of acute scaphoid fractures. Seven studies met the

BACKGROUND: Despite an improved understanding of coronoid anteromedial facet (AMF) fractures, the optimal treatment protocol and technique have not yet been established. The goals of the study were to describe the characteristics of AMF fractures, to suggest a surgical strategy, and to report the outcomes after treatment according to this protocol.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 19 patients with AMF fractures between 2010 and 2012. Eight patients were excluded because of secondary olecranon fracture, radial head fracture, and elbow dislocation, leaving 11 patients with isolated AM

INTRODUCTION: Each fracture has a failing risk which can lead to a non-union. Among the non-invasive strategies proposed to improve bone healing, also in non-union, the use of teriparatide, a drug for the treatment of the osteoporosis, has increasing supporting data.
EXPERIMENTAL DATA: Many studies mainly on rats, but also on primates, demonstrate the positive effect on fracture healing of teriparatide, both in physiological and pathological conditions, with a more rapid evolution of the reparative callus.
CLINICAL DATA: A double blinded randomized controlled study on wrist fractures demonst

INTRODUCTION: Minimally displaced metaphyseal both-bone fractures of the distal forearm in children are often treated with an above-elbow cast (AEC). Treatment with a below-elbow cast (BEC) could give more comfort, but might lead to fracture displacement reducing pronation and supination. Because this has not been systematically investigated, we set up a randomised multicentre study. The purpose of this study was to find out whether BEC causes equal limitation of pronation and supination but with higher comfort level, compared with AEC.

High peak bone mass or density in early adulthood is an important protective factor against osteoporotic fractures in later life, but it is not known whether injuries on growing bones affect the attainment of peak bone mass and density. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry the areal bone mineral density (BMD) of the injured and uninjured extremity (the femoral neck, trochanter area of the femur, distal femur, patella, proximal tibia, and distal tibia), lumbar spine, and distal radius of young adults with a history of early life tibial shaft f

INTRODUCTION: Rotational malunion of forearm fractures may severely impair pronosupination. Accurate preoperative assessment of torsional deformities is therefore critical, yet no standardized technique exists to quantify axial rotation of the radius and ulna, and the validity of using the contralateral limb as a reference remains uncertain. This study aimed to develop a simple, reproducible CT-based method for measuring forearm torsion and to determine side-to-side anatomical symmetry in normal individuals.
METHODS: A manual measurement technique based on cross-sectional two-dimensional CT i

Total wrist arthrodesis, fusion of the carpus to the radius, is a well-established and commonly performed procedure for the management of pancarpal degenerative arthritis, trauma, and other severe diseases of the wrist. A well-known complication of this is radiocarpal nonunion, with a rate of 4.4%. Commonly, bone grafting is done at the time of the surgery using local bone, iliac crest bone graft, or cancellous allograft bone. The Synthes Reamer-Irrigator-Aspirator (RIA) is a flexible reamer originally designed as a single-pass intramedullary reamer that can be used in reaming of long bone fra
