Female CD-1 mice exposed to trichloroethylene (6 h/day) at concentrations from 20-2000 ppm developed a highly specific lung lesion after a single exposure, characterised by vacuolation of the Clara cells, the number of cells affected increasing with increasing dose level. FCE 22250 (3-(N-piperidinomethylazino)methylrifamycin SV) is a member of the new class of 3-azinomethylrifamycins characterized by a long persistance in animals, a good oral absorption and a broad antibacterial spectrum including mycobacteria. In the experimental mice infection sustained by Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, FCE 22250 shows an efficacy 14 times higher than rifampicin and is still therapeutic when administered once every three weeks.

Local application of a growth factor which could stimulate cell turnover, extracellular matrix synthesis and blood vessel formation in the skin should improve and accelerate wound healing processes which are often impaired in old age. We demonstrate the effects of TGF-beta 2 in promoting wound repair in old animals where normal healing responses are shown to be naturally slower. The potential use of TGF-beta s for the treatment of wound injuries, including chronic non-healing ulcers in the elderly, is discussed.

The calcium-activated protease calpain I was localized in rat brain by immunocytochemistry. Calpain I-like immunoreactivity (CLI) was prominent in several structures in which degeneration is an ongoing feature, e.g. spinal motoneurons, olfactory nerve. Also noteworthy was the presence of CLI in regions susceptible to age-related pathologies, e.g. cerebellar Purkinje cells, substantia nigra and subiculum. This distribution suggests that calpain I may be involved with both normal and pathological neuronal degeneration.
