Comparison of corneal thickness measurement with the Pentacam, the PARK1 and an ultrasonic pachymeter.

PURPOSE: The aim was to determine the agreement between PARK1 pachymetric readings and measurements made with the Pentacam and ultrasonic pachymetry. METHODS: In this prospective study, we enrolled refractive surgery patients free of other ocular conditions and performed Pentacam and PARK1 acquisitions followed by ultrasonic pachymetry. We recorded pachymetric readings on the centre, apex and thinnest point with the Pentacam, corneal thickness values of the apex and minimum readings from the PARK1, and the central corneal thickness with the ultrasonic system. Data were compared using t-tests,

The efficacy and safety of posterior pole buckles in the control of progressive high myopia.

PURPOSE: Degenerative myopia is a significant cause of vision loss; yet there is no accepted way of controlling its causative phenotype--progressive high axial myopia. Scleral reinforcement, introduced over 50 years ago, was discredited as a useful technique. This 5-year 'proof of concept' study examines buckling of the posterior pole for myopia control and follows the course of untreated fellow eyes. METHOD: A total of 59 adult eyes, with myopic refractive corrections ranging from -9 to -22 D and axial lengths from 27.8 to 34.6 mm, were studied. A 1-cm-wide flexible buckle of donor sclera wa

Apparent autosomal dominant keratoconus in a large Australian pedigree accounted for by digenic inheritance of two novel loci.

Keratoconus is a debilitating ocular disease characterised by progressive asymmetrical thinning of the cornea, the clear covering at the front of the eye. The resulting protrusion of the cornea results in severe refractive error, in the most severe cases requiring corneal grafting. It is a complex disease with a genetic component. Despite several reports of linked loci, major gene identification has been elusive. A genome-wide linkage scan in a large Australian pedigree with apparent autosomal dominant keratoconus was conducted using the Affymetrix 10K SNP chip and two regions of linkage ident

Paired observations of refractive error after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To quantify the design effect if pairing between eyes is ignored when reporting refractive outcome following cataract surgery. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of biometry prediction error in 612 patients who had bilateral phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The levels of uncertainty (confidence interval and variance) of the estimates for the biometry prediction error were compared when intra-cluster correlation between ocular measurements of paired eyes within each patient was either taken into account or ignored. The design effect (the ratio o

Double Vision.

When evaluating a patient with a complaint of double vision, it is important to distinguish monocular versus binocular diplopia, which are differentiated by asking the patient to cover each eye separately. In the setting of binocular double vision, one of the two images disappears when either eye is covered, because diplopia is the result of ocular misalignment. On the other hand, monocular double vision resolves when the affected eye is covered, but remains when the opposite eye is occluded. Causes of monocular diplopia include cataract, refractive error, and retinal disease, which can be man

Evaluation of night vision disturbances in contact lens wearers.

PURPOSE: We quantitatively recorded and evaluated night vision disturbances with physiologically dilated pupils. We compared the amount of image degradation experienced in eyes wearing spherical soft contact lenses with the amount of image degradation experienced by subjects wearing spectacles. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 69 eyes from 35 myopic subjects with no ocular pathology. The subjects ranged in age from 22 to 35 years. We designed a test to quantitatively record image degradation with physiologically dilated pupils in scotopic conditions of dim ambient light. Previously, we hav

Feasibility and accuracy of school-led vision screening in primary and secondary school students within the United Kingdom.

PURPOSE: Vision screening occurs once in United Kingdom (UK) children on school entry, but has recently been withdrawn in some areas. Consequently, significant refractive error and/or vision problems may go undetected. School-led vision checking, where school staff assess vision, is increasingly advocated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. This study investigates the accuracy of school-led vision checking in UK school students. METHODS: School personnel were trained to conduct vision checks on their students. These involved external observation of the eyes for obviou

Near Phoria and Near Point of Convergence Parameters in Children With Hearing and Speech Impairment: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Children with hearing and speech impairment are reported to have a higher prevalence of refractive errors and amblyopia. Most studies conducted previously have not primarily concentrated on the binocular vision aspects of near vision in children with hearing impairment (HI). The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the parameters of near phoria and near point of convergence (NPC) among hearing and speech impaired school children with age matched control group of emmetropic non hearing-impaired Children. METHODS: A total of 279 participants in the age range of

Corneal biomechanics after small incision lenticule extraction and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) have been extensively studied as the main surgical methods for corneal refractive surgery. However, there is no consensus on whether SMILE is superior to FS-LASIK in corneal biomechanics. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis used the results of ocular response analyzer and corvis ST to explore whether SMILE is superior to FS-LASIK in corneal biomechanics. METHODS: The literature was searched in PubMed, EMBASE, and Controlled Trials Register databases. The Cochrane Col

New correlations between ocular parameters and disease severity in Spanish patients with Gaucher's disease Type I.

BACKGROUND: Gaucher's disease is associated with a high variety of structural and functional abnormalities in the eye, which do not always affect visual acuity. The purpose of this study was to analyse ocular features in Spanish patients with Gaucher's disease type I, and to investigate their possible correlation with phenotypic and burden parameters of this entity. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study compared parameters belonging to 18 eyes from 9 Spanish patients with Gaucher's disease Type I with 80 eyes from 40 healthy controls. Complete ophthalmological examination included

Manhattan Vision Screening and Follow-Up Study in Vulnerable Populations: 1-Month Feasibility Results.

Purpose/Aim: In the United States, high rates of vision impairment and eye disease disproportionately impact those who lack access to eye care, specifically vulnerable populations. The objective of our study was to test instruments, implement protocols, and collect preliminary data for a larger 5-year study, which aims to improve detection of eye diseases and follow-up eye care in vulnerable populations using community health workers (CHW) and patient navigators. In the study, trained CHWs conducted vision screening and patient navigators scheduled on-site eye exams and arranged appointments f
