1. Over 200 parthenogenetic generations of the freshwater Cladocera Moina macrocopa were obtained aseptically in three artificial media. 2. The media have two phases: a liquid phase supplying mineral salts, water soluble vitamins, nucleic acids, and a liver extract and a fine particulate phase made from coagulated proteins, starch and lipid factors. 3. The particulate phase supplies the bulk nutrients very efficiently; hence, this type of media may be useful for growing other filter-feeders.

The fermentation medium for bleomycin biosynthesis was optimized with the help of a mathematical method for experiment modelling. With the use of the schemes of orthogonal latin squares the optimal concentrations of the sources of nitrogen, carbon and mineral salts were determined and the negative effect of cupric sulphate on the antibiotic biosynthesis was shown. The antibiotic production on the developed medium was 3.7 times higher than that on the initial medium.

In order to investigate the decomposition of 46 organic and anorganic compounds by Bac. mycoides, the behaviour of four strains was tested by means of plate counting technique (after Koch) and the Warburg method. Mostly intensive substances containing protein were decomposed by all strains. Furthermore amino acid, sugar, alcohols, and ammonium salts are used by the bacteria, but there were large differences between strains tested. Urea and nitrates have not been decomposed.

The depolarizing potency of polymethylene-bis-trimethylammonium and alkyl-trimenthylammonium compounds with 3-10 methylene groups was studied on the identified giant central neurons of gastropod mollusc Limnaea stagnalis using intracellular microelectrode technique. The bisquaternary salts with 4-7 methylene groups were inactive while the mononitrogen analogues showed cholinomimetic activity. The similar results were obtained by other authors on Vertebrate skeletal muscles with substances studied. The possible explanations of this fact are suggested.

The antibiotic sensitivity of 43 strains of Pseudomonas and the minimal inhibitory concentration of mercurial derivatives (5 mineral salts and 4 organics compounds) and of silver nitrate to these microorganisms have been studied. Twelve of these strains were P. aeruginosa of hospital origin, and 31 were Pseudomonas from surface water. Resistance against these inhibitory substances let us to established some connections between the different strains. Some strains were selected to transfer resistance markers by conjugation.

Iodine deficiency disorders were widely prevalent in Indian subcontinent before the successful salt iodisation. There has been a remarkable decline in goitre prevalence and improvement of functional thyroid status and normalisation of iodine nutrition status in the community. Goitre endemicity of varying degree persists among school children even a decade after successful salt iodisation in India. Some other factors like high thiocyanate exposure or auto-immune thyroid disease could be responsible for such a phenomenon.

We present a neonate who presented with hematuria and acute renal failure. Classical 21 hydroxylase deficiency was diagnosed on the basis of features of salt wasting, response to treatment with corticosteroids and mineralocorticoids and a positive ACTH stimulation test. Renal vein thrombosis secondary to hemoconcentration due to salt wasting was attributed as the cause of hematuria. Follow-up revealed clinical improvement and normalization of renal parameters. This is the first report of congenital adrenal hyperplasia presenting as hematuria and renal failure to the best of our knowledge.

m- and p-aminobenzoic acids were converted to the title compounds by sequential use of ClCH2COCl, SOCl2, glycine methyl or ethyl ester, AcSK, and hydrolysis. The title compounds and a number of salts were compared for mucolytic activity, toxicity, stability, and hygroscopicity. When compared to N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), the compounds exhibit several times the in vitro mucolytic activity of NAC on a molar basis. The most promising candidate appears to be the sodium salt 3.5H2O 2 of the meta series.

Salt and water depletion has been noted in 10 patients with long-established ileostomies. Marked renal conservation of sodium and water was present in a number of apparently healthy ileostomy patients. The sodium and potassium concentrations of ileostomy material showed little variation when these patients were in good health but there was a decrease in the sodium concentration and an increase in the potassium concentration during episodes of salt depletion. Greater attention needs to be paid to the fluid and electrolyte requirements of ileostomy patients after they have left hospital.

This study initially focuses on the fractionation of a melanoidin-like product (MLP) from sugarcane molasses and its antioxidant properties. In this study, we investigated the impact of lipid oxidation on the discoloration of Sawai (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) lipids and proteins. Sawai microsomes, liposomes, and salt-soluble myofibrillar proteins were prepared and subjected to lipid oxidation process. BACKGROUND: Recent experimental data suggest a role for apremilast in the treatment of alopecia areata. Small clinical studies have so far provided contradictory results.
OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and safety of apremilast in five cases of extensive and treatment-resistant alopecia areata.

Nitrate and nitrite are used in meat and fish curing, and in the manufacture of certain cheeses. Nitrate itself has little antimicrobial effect and in most applications could be replaced by lower concentrations of nitrite. Further, improved hygiene diminishes the need for nitrite. The antimicrobial activity and technological needs for nitrate and nitrite are reviewed. It is concluded that the technological needs for nitrite in meat products stored at < 10 degrees C could be met by added nitrite concentrations of 50 mg/kg.
