Exploring the relationship between sleep patterns, alcohol and other substances consumption in young adults: Insights from wearables and Mobile surveys in the National Consortium on alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in adolescence (NCANDA) cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The use of psychotropic substances has negative short- and long-term health outcomes, including complex direct and indirect effects on sleep and sleep-cardiovascular function. Here, we investigate daily relationships between self-reported substance use and objective measures of sleep and sleep-related heart rate (HR) in community-dwelling young adults. METHODS: Fifty-five healthy young adults (Mage = 23.1 ± 2.29 y, 30 female) in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) study completed a 28-day ecological momentary assessment protocol, inclu

Not just emotion regulation, but cognition: An experience sampling study testing the relations of ecological interpretation biases and use of emotion regulation strategies with momentary affective states during daily life functioning.

BACKGROUND: Current research is moving from studying cognitive biases and maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) as relatively stable phenomena contributing to affective disturbances, adopting ecological methodologies, such as Experience Sampling Methods (ESM). However, there is still limited ESM evidence on the interactions between stress and ER strategies' use, and negative interpretation biases, regarding their relations with momentary affective states. In this study, we used a new ESM design to disentangle the contextual, regulatory and cognitive processes implicated in daily affective experi

Contributions of subjective status to eating behaviors, obesity, and metabolic health across development.

Subjective status is the evaluation of one's social or socioeconomic status relative to others. Lower subjective status has been associated with risk of overweight/obesity, poorer metabolic health, and obesogenic food preferences and eating behaviors. However, these findings are predominantly based on studies of adolescents and young adults. This indicates major gaps in knowledge and application of this social determinant of obesity and metabolic health, given that perceived status develops throughout the life course along with food environments and eating habits. Here, we review the relations

Do measures of physical capacity and walking self-efficacy relate to frailty in older adults with difficulty walking outdoors? A secondary data analysis.

PURPOSE: Measures of physical capacity and self-efficacy may help rehabilitation professionals better understand and detect frailty in older adults. We aimed to characterize frailty, walking self-efficacy, physical capacity, and their inter-relationships in older adults with difficulty walking outdoors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A secondary analysis of baseline data from 187 older adults (age ≥ 65 years) with mobility limitations was performed. Frailty was evaluated using the cardiovascular health study frailty index. Physical capacity was measured using the 10-meter walk test (10mWT), 6-min wal

Social capital and cognitive decline: Does sleep duration mediate the association?

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that social capital (SC) is associated with the risk of cognitive decline; however, the mechanism explaining how SC leads to cognitive decline is unclear. The current study examines the mediation effect of sleep duration on the relationship between SC and cognitive decline in Chinese older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 955 community-dwelling aged 60 or over was conducted. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE), self-report sleep duration questionnaire, and social capital scales were administered during the face-to-face survey. The Bootstrap metho

Perception of Breast Cancer Risk in Over 11,000 Patients During Routine Mammography Exam.

To assess women's knowledge of personal breast cancer risk. Additionally, we aimed to determine how often physicians are discussing individualized risk assessments of breast cancer with their patients, and if those discussion affected risk perception. Surveys were distributed in radiology centers in New York and made available to patients presenting for routine mammography. As exact number of patients who viewed the survey is unknown, response rate could not be assessed. Data from the survey was used to calculate each patient's personal breast cancer risk using the National Cancer Institute Br

Cumulative Risk of Substance Use in Community College Students.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Substance use in community college students has been explored in only a handful of studies. Differences in population characteristics and substance use between 2- and 4-year students suggest that different factors may promote and thwart this behavior. Cumulative risk is a parsimonious methodology that provides better model stability and more statistical power, yet it has only been recently used in substance use research. The aim of this study is to investigate multiple aspects of substance use risk in a population in need of substance use prevention and intervention

The Help for Hay Fever community pharmacy-based pilot randomised controlled trial for intermittent allergic rhinitis.

Management of intermittent allergic rhinitis (IAR) is suboptimal in the UK. An Australian community pharmacy-based intervention has been shown to help patients better self-manage their IAR. We conducted a pilot cluster RCT in 12 Scottish community pharmacies to assess transferability of the Australian intervention. Trained staff in intervention pharmacies delivered the intervention to eligible customers (n = 60). Non-intervention pharmacy participants (n = 65) received usual care. Outcome measures included effect size of change in the mini-Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (min

Prevalence and risk factors of domestic violence in women attending the National Guard Primary Health Care Centers in the Western Region, Saudi Arabia, 2018.

BACKGROUND: Domestic violence (DV) is considered a public health issue in Saudi Arabia as well as a violation of a fundamental human right. DV causes many acute and chronic physical and mental health consequences. Cultural taboos and lack of awareness regarding the appropriate support services can increase the number of cases annually. The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of DV in women attending the National Guard Primary Health Care Clinics in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with patients attending five P

Identifying high risk subgroups of MSM: a latent class analysis using two samples.

BACKGROUND: Latent class analyses (LCA) are increasingly being used to target specialized HIV interventions, but generalizability of emergent population structures across settings has yet to be considered. We compare LCA performed on two online samples of HIV negative Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) to detect more generalizable latent class structures and to assess the extent to which sampling considerations impact the validity of LCA results. METHODS: LCAs were performed on an 1) nationwide online survey which involved no in-person contact with study staff and a 2) sentinel surveilla
