Chordomas are rare, locally aggressive tumors of notochordal origin usually arising in the spine or base of the skull. Skin involvement is rare and typically occurs via direct extension of the primary tumor to the skin. Although there are increasing reports of the skin being involved as a distant metastatic site in patients with chordoma, this remains an exceedingly rare occurrence. We present two cases of patients diagnosed with metastasis of chordoma to the skin that represented distant metastasis. In the first case, a patient with a primary thoracic/lumbar chordoma presented with isolated m

Cadaveric models remain an essential part of medical training across all specialties. Due to their scarcity, high costs, and possible health hazards, there is a need for more accessible and affordable alternatives, especially in low-resource settings. We introduce cost-effective and easily replicable three-dimensional (3D) printed models to help democratize access to hands-on neuroanatomy education. Silicone-based glue is applied on the surface of a 3D-printed or cadaveric bone frame. Using plastiline on a 3 mm 3D acrylonitrile butadiene styrene pen, the desired anatomical structure is printed

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited disorder characterized by degeneration of motor neurons and symmetrical muscle weakness and atrophy. Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) or moyamoya disease (MMD) is radiologically defined by chronic cerebrovascular occlusion with abnormal vascular network formation in the skull base. We report herein a 21-year-old female patient with limb weakness and muscular atrophy for 17 years. Electromyography revealed extensive motor neuron damage. Cranial MRA showed occlusion of bilateral anterior and middle cerebral arteries, with increased peripheral blood vessels an

Mucormycosis is a modern-day lifestyle disease that has burst into the health-care scenario. It is an opportunistic fungal infection that proliferates into the immunocompromised host by invasion of the fungus into the paranasal sinuses, thereby invading the palate, maxilla, and orbit. Left untreated it invades the cranial components such as cavernous sinus, skull base, and brain. Mucormycosis invades blood vessels, making these infections highly angioinvasive. We reviewed 45 cases of mucormycois of the head-and-neck region from 2010 to 2020 on the basis of electronic search peer-reviewed journ

We describe two new osteolaemine crocodylids from the Early and early Middle Miocene of Kenya: Kinyang mabokoensis tax. nov. (Maboko, 15 Ma) and Kinyang tchernovi tax. nov. (Karungu and Loperot, 18 Ma). Additional material referable to Kinyang is known from Chianda and Moruorot. The skull was broad and dorsoventrally deep, and the genus can be diagnosed based on the combined presence of a partial overbite, a subdivided fossa for the lateral collateral ligament on the surangular, and a maxilla with no more than 13 alveoli. Phylogenetic analyses based on morphological and combined morphological

BACKGROUND: Olfactory neuroblastomas are rare sinonasal tumors that arise from the olfactory epithelium. The authors presented a case of an olfactory neuroblastoma with extensive cranial invasion that demonstrated dramatic response to sorafenib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.
OBSERVATIONS: A 54-year-old man with history of prostate cancer and melanoma presented with left-sided proptosis and was found to have a 6.5-cm Kadish stage D olfactory neuroblastoma with cranial invasion that was refractory to chemotherapy and everolimus. However, it demonstrated dramatic response to sorafenib, causing ex

A 40-year-old Caucasian man presented with sudden onset of left-sided hemiparesis associated with dysphonia, dysphagia, and right-sided weakness on shoulder elevation and head rotation. The clinical examination revealed deviation of the tongue to the right, absence of right-sided gag reflex, right-sided palatal and vocal cord paresis, and weakness of the right trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles; all were in addition to left-sided brachiocephalic-accentuated hemiparesis. The diagnostic examination revealed dissection of the right carotid artery with occlusion of the middle cerebral arter

Chiari 1 malformation and hydrocephalus are frequent findings in multi-suture and syndromic craniosynostosis patients. In this article, we review the pathogenesis, clinical significance, and management options for these conditions with comments from our own experience. The role of premature fusion of skull base sutures leading to a crowded posterior fossa and venous outflow obstruction resulting in impaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorption is highlighted. Management options are unique in this group and we advocate early (prior to 6 months of age) posterior vault expansion by distraction os

BACKGROUND: In our center, large vestibular schwannoma (VS) is typically managed by a planned partial resection through the translabyrinthine route. Here, we report on a rare complication of VS surgery and severe neurogenic pulmonary edema.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 33-year-old male was referred to our skull-base center with a large VS. A planned partial resection was performed. The surgery was without complications and the patient showed good recovery without facial nerve dysfunction. In the evening of the 2nd day after surgery, the patient showed rapid neurological deterioration, accompanied by c

INTRODUCTION: Brain abscesses can lead to a diverse array of complications, especially when they are polymicrobial in nature. Multiple underlying pathogens may present with a unique set of clinical symptoms which require an early identification and treatment. Skull base osteomyelitis with sellar floor erosion and pituitary involvement with SIADH are such rare complications of brain abscesses which have never been reported previously in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an immunocompetent 38-year-old male with altered mental sensorium and left hemiparesis due to polymicr

BACKGROUND: Despite different etiologies, chronic otitis media involves the damaging and restructuring of bone tissue. The inflammatory process destroys elements of the ossicular chain, and bone lesions may appear that allow the development of otogenous complications.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: A correlation between the degree of damage to the ossicular chain as well as the bony walls of the middle ear and the type of chronic inflammatory lesions was sought. Destructive changes to bones were observed using scanning microscopy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The removed damaged fragments of the ossicles were pr

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced cavernous malformation (RICM) is a rare sequela of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment of intracranial tumors. To date, no study reported on RICM after SRS for meningiomas originating from the skull base. The relationship between locus of initial meningioma and RICM has not been studied.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman presented with persistent headaches and blepharoptosis at initial episode. MRI disclosed a right parasellar lesion, diagnosed as a cavernous sinus meningioma (CSM). After receiving a single-fractionated SRS, headache relieved, but blep

BACKGROUND: The pedicled nasoseptal mucoperiosteal flap is currently widely used for the reconstruction of a skull base defect following transsphenoidal surgery. The flap is generally secured in position by a Foley catheter balloon. We describe an alternative technique using cylinders of Gelfoam™ (Pfizer Incorporated) to buttress the flap in place, obviating the need for a balloon catheter.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A review of our database identified patients who underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for a pituitary macroadenoma with nasoseptal flap, secured with small rolls of Gelfoam™ (

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (sCSF) leak from the skull base has been previously reported, but there are few reports of sCSF leak from the foramen rotundum due to its rare occurrence. This case report describes a 15-year-old male patient that presented with left side watery rhinorrhoea that had been present since he was 4 years of age and a history of repeated bouts of meningitis of unknown cause. A discharge sample from the nose tested positive for beta-2 transferrin. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) revealed a fistula between the cerebellopontine angle and the left sphenoid sinus. Th

The use of minimally invasive transcranial ports for the resection of deep-seated lesions has been shown to be safe and effective. To date, most of the literature regarding the tubular retractors used in brain surgery is comprised of individual case reports that describe the successful resection of deep-seated lesions such as thalamic pilocytic astrocytomas, colloid cysts in the third ventricle, hematomas, and cavernous angiomas. The authors describe their experience using a tubular retractor system with three different cases involving large intraventricular meningiomas and examine radiographi

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery (ESBS) is a well-established management strategy for anterior cranial fossa (ACF) encephaloceles in adults. However, its application to the pediatric population has not been evaluated in large-scale studies. This study systematically reviews the safety of ESBS for pediatric ACF encephaloceles.
METHODS: Articles reporting on pediatric patients undergoing purely ESBS for encephaloceles were reviewed from three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library). Main outcomes were post-operative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and other surgical c
