Computational exploration of natural inhibitors against toxin-associated proteins in Naegleria fowleri Karachi strain.

Naegleria fowleri, a thermophilic, free-living amoeba, is the causative agent of Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare but nearly always fatal brain infection. The rising number of PAM cases in Karachi, Pakistan, particularly linked to a unique local strain, underscores the urgent need for effective therapeutic interventions. In this study, a computational approach was employed to identify potential natural inhibitors targeting toxin-producing proteins from the N. fowleri Karachi strain. Eight exons encoding toxin proteins were retrieved from the Soft Berry Fgenesh 2.6 database, an

A case of pancreatic PEComa with prominent inflammatory cell infiltration: the inflammatory subtype is a distinct histologic group of PEComa.

BACKGROUND: PEComa is a mesenchymal tumor that can occur in various organs including the uterus and soft tissues. PEComas are composed of perivascular epithelioid cells, and angiomyolipoma (AML), clear cell sugar tumor (CCST), and lymphangiomyomatosis (LAM) are considered lesions of the same lineage as tumors of the PEComa family. Histologically, a common PEComa shows solid or sheet-like proliferation of epithelioid cells. This is accompanied by an increase in the number of dilated blood vessels. Here, we report a case of pancreatic PEComa with marked inflammatory cell infiltration. CASE PRES

Nonionizing diagnostic imaging modalities for visualizing health and pathology of periodontal and peri-implant tissues.

Radiographic examination has been an essential part of the diagnostic workflow in periodontology and implant dentistry. However, radiographic examination unavoidably involves ionizing radiation and its associated risks. Clinicians and researchers have invested considerable efforts in assessing the feasibility and capability of utilizing nonionizing imaging modalities to replace traditional radiographic imaging. Two such modalities have been extensively evaluated in clinical settings, namely, ultrasonography (USG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Another modality, optical coherence tomogra

Generating synthetic computed tomography for radiotherapy: SynthRAD2023 challenge report.

Radiation therapy plays a crucial role in cancer treatment, necessitating precise delivery of radiation to tumors while sparing healthy tissues over multiple days. Computed tomography (CT) is integral for treatment planning, offering electron density data crucial for accurate dose calculations. However, accurately representing patient anatomy is challenging, especially in adaptive radiotherapy, where CT is not acquired daily. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides superior soft-tissue contrast. Still, it lacks electron density information, while cone beam CT (CBCT) lacks direct electron den

Development of a software system for surgical robots based on multimodal image fusion: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Surgical robots are gaining increasing popularity because of their capability to improve the precision of pedicle screw placement. However, current surgical robots rely on unimodal computed tomography (CT) images as baseline images, limiting their visualization to vertebral bone structures and excluding soft tissue structures such as intervertebral discs and nerves. This inherent limitation significantly restricts the applicability of surgical robots. To address this issue and further enhance the safety and accuracy of robot-assisted pedicle screw placement, this study will develop

Trochlea Dysplasia as the Major Anatomic Risk Factors for Patellofemoral Joint Instability: An Infographic as a Visual Learning Tool.

Patellofemoral instability (PFI) is a common condition in children and adolescents, ranging from mild discomfort and mal-tracking to lateral patellar dislocation [1]. A number of anatomical risk factors have been described in the literature, such as trochlear dysplasia, patella alta, excessive tibial tuberosity to trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance, patellar tilt and soft tissue alterations [2]. Among them, TD has been identified as the main anatomical risk factor with the strongest association with PFI [1, 2]. In the study by Dejour et al. [2] radiographically observed TD was identified in 96%
