In Vitro Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activities of Piper betle L. Ethanolic Leaf Extract on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections such as abscesses, furuncles, and cellulitis. Biofilm forming strains of S. aureus have higher incidence of antimicrobial resistance to at least three or more antibiotics and are considered as multidrug resistant. Since S. aureus biofilm-producing strains have higher rates of multidrug and methicillin resistance compared to non-biofilm-producing strains, the need for alternative therapeutic option is important. Furthermore, rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Asia …

Comparison of the efficacy and safety of standard- and high-dose daptomycin: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: Standard doses of daptomycin at 4 and 6 mg/kg were used for the treatment of skin and soft tissue for infections and bacteraemia, respectively. However, increased doses of daptomycin are recommended for complicated infections by Gram-positive organisms. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using 4 databases. We compared treatment success between standard-dose (SD, 4-6 mg/kg) and high-dose (HD, >6 mg/kg) daptomycin in patients with all-cause bacteraemia, complicated bacteraemia, infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis and foreign body/prosthetic infection as the primary outcome. Infective Endocarditis by Clostridioides and Clostridium Species-A Narrative Review.

Bacteria of the genus Clostridium are anaerobic Gram-positive spore-forming bacilli that include more than 200 species. Some of them are known to cause invasive infections and diseases caused by the production of toxins. Some of the diseases that are mediated by toxins are colitis in patients with specific risk factors, such as previous administration of antimicrobials or foodborne botulism. Invasive diseases include bacteremia, infective endocarditis (IE), clostridial myonecrosis (gas gangrene), and other diseases that involve the destruction of soft tissue due to the local production of toxi

Impact of Ceftolozane-Tazobactam vs. Best Alternative Therapy on Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Multidrug-Resistant and Extensively Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Lower Respiratory Tract Infections.

INTRODUCTION: Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and difficult-to-treat (DTR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa are increasingly challenging to combat. Ceftolozane-tazobactam (C/T) is a novel β-lactam-β-lactamase inhibitor combination now commonly used to treat MDR and XDR P. aeruginosa. Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) remain the most common source of infection caused by MDR/XDR P. aeruginosa. Comparative effectiveness studies to date have been limited by the type of comparator agents (i.e., aminoglycosides and polymyxins) and the inclusion of mul

Prevalence and severity of abscesses and cellulitis, and their associations with other health outcomes, in a community-based study of people who inject drugs in London, UK.

BACKGROUND: Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) are a common but preventable cause of morbidity and mortality among people who inject drugs (PWID). They can be severe, and hospitalisations of PWID with SSTI are rising. The most common SSTI presentations are abscesses and cellulitis. METHODS: We used data from Care & Prevent, a cross-sectional community survey of PWID in London. We reported the lifetime prevalence of SSTI, severity of infections, key risk factors, and associated sequelae. Pictorial questions were used to assess SSTI severity. RESULTS: We recruited 455 PWID. Oral Manifestations and Complications in Childhood Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous group of diseases, whose classification is based on lineage-commitment and genetics. Although rare in childhood, it is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults, accounting for 80% of all cases in this age group. The prognosis of this disease remains poor (especially in childhood, as compared to acute lymphoblastic leukemia); however, overall survival has significantly improved over the past 30 years. The health of the oral cavity is a remarkable reflection of the systemic status of an individual. Identification of the signs and symptoms o

Staphylococcus aureus Exploits the Host Apoptotic Pathway To Persist during Infection.

Staphylococcus aureus is a deadly pathogen that causes fatal diseases in humans. During infection, S. aureus secretes nuclease (Nuc) and adenosine synthase A (AdsA) to generate cytotoxic deoxyadenosine (dAdo) from neutrophil extracellular traps which triggers noninflammatory apoptosis in macrophages. In this manner, replicating staphylococci escape phagocytic killing without alerting the immune system. Here, we show that mice lacking caspase-3 in immune cells exhibit increased resistance toward S. aureus Caspase-3-deficient macrophages are resistant to staphylococcal dAdo and gain access to ab

Evaluation of functional outcome of pilon fractures managed with limited internal fixation and external fixation: A prospective clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: The management of pilon fractures is controversial primarily due to the high rate of complications irrespective of the mode of treatment. Limited internal fixation with external fixation is associated with minimal soft tissue handling. This may reduce the chances of wound dehiscence and infection. This study was designed to evaluate the functional and clinical outcomes in patients treated with limited internal fixation combined with external fixation in pilon fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was conducted as a prospective clinical study on 56 skeletally mature patient

Effective Treatment of Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome with Platelet Microbicidal Protein in CBRB-Rb(8.17)1Iem Mice Model.

Skin and soft-tissue infections are among the most common infections. Staphylococcus aureus may cause a number of toxin-mediated diseases, including staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). The therapeutic efficacy of some antimicrobial peptides was recently evaluated in a mouse model of SSSS. This study is the first in vivo demonstration of the use of PMP to improve outcome of SSSS. Twenty-four CBRB-Rb(8.17)1Iem female mice naturally infected by endogenous S. aureus with SSSS symptoms were used in this work and divided into two equal groups. From neck of each mouse was isolated and identi

Computed tomographic features of feline sino-nasal and sino-orbital aspergillosis.

Feline upper respiratory tract aspergillosis (URTA) occurs as two distinct anatomical forms, namely, sino-nasal aspergillosis (SNA) and sino-orbital aspergillosis (SOA). An emerging pathogen, Aspergillus felis, is frequently involved. The pathogenesis of URTA, in particular the relationship between the infecting isolate and outcome, is poorly understood. In this study, computed tomography was used to investigate the route of fungal infection and extension in 16 cases (SNA n = 7, SOA n = 9) where the infecting isolate had been identified by molecular testing. All cases had nasal cavity involvem

Molecular typing of clinical Cryptococcus neoformans isolates collected in Germany from 2004 to 2010.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection mostly caused by Cryptococcus neoformans. We identified agents of cryptococcosis diagnosed in Germany from 2004 to 2010. We used multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) to understand the molecular epidemiology of cryptococcosis. Sero- and mating types of individual patient isolates were determined by PCR. MLST was performed using the seven-locus scheme. Allele and nucleotide diversity was calculated for each locus of C. neoformans var. grubii and C. neoformans var. neoformans. Phylogenetic relations were assessed by dendrograms. Clinical data were compared betwe
