The effect of lymphocytes from sufferers from recurrent aphthous ulceration upon colon cells in tissue culture.

The release of (51)Cr from labelled colon cells was used to assess a possible lymphocytotoxic effect of peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients suffering from recurrent aphthous ulceration. No significant (p > 0.03) difference was observed between the isotope release following incubation with patients' or control lymphocytes. The absence of such a lymphocytotoxic effect, detectable with oral epithelial cells, is discussed in relation to the role of cellular hypersensitivity in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis and aphthous ulceration.

Adaptive characteristics of leaf phenotypic plasticity and integration in Calamagrostis angustifolia under long-term nitrogen addition.

Based on a long-term nitrogen (N) addition experiment in the Sanjiang Plain wetland, we measured leaf photosynthetic physiology, morphological structure, and ecological stoichiometric characteristics of the dominant species Calamagrostis angustifolia among three treatments: control (0 g N·m-2·a-1), low N (4 g N·m-2·a-1), and high N (8 g N·m-2·a-1). We elucidated the response patterns and adaptive strategies of its functional traits after 14 years chronic N inputs. The results showed that 14 leaf functional traits responded differently to long-term N addition. Under the low N treatment, leaf ni

Cumulative and Legacy Effects of Irrigation on Growth, Physiology, and Gene Expression in Veronica longifolia Under Field Conditions.

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of fluctuating moisture regimes on the Korean Peninsula, yet plant responses to moderate field moisture variation remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of irrigation on growth, physiology, and gene expression of the native perennial plant Veronica longifolia under field conditions. Plants were exposed to irrigated and nonirrigated treatments for 20 weeks in 2024, followed by a subsequent growing season in 2025 without irrigation to assess cumulative and carryover effects. During the 2024 treatment period, seasonal mean soil w

Strain-Specific Effects of Epichloë bromicola Symbionts on Photosynthesis and Chloroplast Ultrastructure in Hordeum bogdanii.

Epichloë endophytes can confer diverse benefits to host grasses, but the differences in effects between strains from different populations are poorly understood. In this study, we compared the impacts of two Epichloë bromicola strains isolated from distinct geographic populations of Hordeum bogdanii: GS1 (from Linze County, Gansu Province) and WS1 (from Wensu County, Xinjiang Province). Through controlled inoculation experiments, we established two new symbionts-HE2 (WS1 transferred to endophyte-free GF plants) and HE3 (GS1 transferred to endophyte-free WF plants)-alongside the natural symbion

Transcriptome analysis revealed key genes and pathways related to cadmium tolerance and accumulation in coix (Coix lacryma-jobi L.).

Coix (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) is an essential medicinal and edible plant with great economic value. Nevertheless, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying coix response to cadmium (Cd) stress. Coix germplasm, YY03-03, was exposed to 0 (control), 15, and 30 mg kg-1 Cd. We observed that YY03-03 exhibited low Cd absorption and transportation capacity. Further, various enrichment and translocation factors decreased under Cd stress. Moreover, under Cd stress levels of 15 and 30 mg kg-¹, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and photosynthetic rate significantly decreased (by 54.0

Genome-wide association study of water-use efficiency and shoot biomass conferred by V. berlandieri rootstocks in grapevine.

BACKGROUND: Deciphering the genetic basis of above and below ground organs communication is essential for plant adaptation. In grafted perennial crops, such as grapevine, identifying genes from the roots system controlling the expression of shoot traits is essential to improve plant adaptation to environmental conditions through rootstock breeding. However, the grapevine rootstocks genetic control on conferred scion traits has rarely been explored and even less considering genetic diversity at the intra-species level through GWAS. In this study we used a Vitis berlandieri natural population co

Clonal differences in ecophysiological responses to imposed drought in selected Eucalyptus grandis × E. urophylla hybrids.

Measuring ecophysiological responses of Eucalyptus clones grown under reduced water availability could assist in clonal selection for climate resilience. We hypothesized that clonal variation in chlorophyll a fluorescence was more readily detected than variations in leaf-level gas exchanges when 2-year-old Eucalyptus grandis W.Hill ex Maiden × Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake hybrid clones (C1, C2, C3 and C4) grown under rainfed (RF) and water-restricted (WR) conditions were evaluated during dry and rainy seasons, in the morning and midday diurnal periods. The C2 clone was the most drought tole

Elevated CO2 Increases the Canopy Temperature of Mature Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak).

The canopy thermal response of natural forests to elevated CO2 (eCO2) is an understudied biophysical feedback in the global climate system. We investigated the effects of eCO2 (150 μmol mol-1 above ambient) on canopy temperature (Tcan) dynamics of mature (> 175 years) Quercus robur (oak) at the Birmingham Institute for Forest Research Free Air CO2 Enrichment (BIFoR-FACE) facility in Staffordshire, England, during the growing seasons of 2021, 2022 and 2023. We employed long-term, high-frequency thermal infrared (TIR) imaging to measure Tcan. Our results show that daily maximum oak Tcan under eC

Comparative efficacy of seed biopriming and soil drenching with Bacillus altitudinis TM22 and Bacillus atrophaeus MCM61 on the suppression of Fusarium wilt of cotton.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus species suppress fungal pathogens by producing antimicrobial peptides. However, there is limited evidence of comparative effects of seed biopriming and soil drenching with Bacillus on pathogen suppression. RESULTS: Among six Bacillus species, B. altitudinis TM22 exhibited the highest in vitro inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV) associated with Fusarium wilt of cotton. Lipopeptides (LPs) and polyketides (PKs) were extracted from the two most inhibitory strains: B. altitudinis TM22 and B. atrophaeus MCM61, where LPs from TM22 showed higher in vitro inh

Combined effect of gallic acid and zinc ferrite nanoparticles on wheat growth and yield under salinity stress.

Salinity stress significantly impacts crops, disrupting their water balance and nutrient uptake, reducing growth, yield, and overall plant health. High salinity in soil can adversely affect plants by disrupting their water balance. Excessive salt levels can lead to dehydration, hinder nutrient absorption, and damage plant cells, ultimately impairing growth and reducing crop yields. Gallic acid (GA) and zinc ferrite (ZnFNP) can effectively overcome this problem. GA can promote root growth, boost photosynthesis, and help plants absorb nutrients efficiently. However, their combined application as

Insight into physiological and biochemical markers against formaldehyde stress in spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum L.).

Formaldehyde is a prominent volatile organic compound and also considered as an indoor air pollutant. Chlorophytum comosum, an indoor plant, has been reported to metabolize indoor formaldehyde. But the phytotoxic effects of formaldehyde, being a pollutant, on C. comosum are not well explored. Furthermore, C. comosum responses that can be considered as markers at the physiological and biochemical level against formaldehyde stress are not yet investigated. Therefore, the current research study was aimed to evaluate such potential markers against formaldehyde in C. comosum. Briefly, C. comosum wa

Integrated physiological and omics analyses reveal the mechanism of beneficial fungal Trichoderma sp. alleviating cadmium toxicity in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.).

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal and readily accumulates in tobacco, which imperils public health via Cd exposure from smoking. Beneficial microbes have a pivotal role in promoting plant growth, especially under environmental stresses such as heavy metal stresses. In this study, we introduced a novel fungal strain Trichoderma nigricans T32781, and investigated its capacity to alleviate Cd-induced stress in tobacco plants through comprehensive physiological and omics analyses. Our findings revealed that T32781 inoculation in soil leads to a substantial reduction in Cd-induced growth i

Cell cycle arrest: A breakthrough in the supportive care of older cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Age is a major risk factor for the acute and chronic complications of cancer chemotherapy. The current approach to the prevention of these complications is reactive and involves the reduction of the doses and the delay of treatment which may compromise the outcome. There is a limited number of antidotes to chemotherapy toxicity and these have complications of their own. Oldest old and frail patients are mostly excluded from life saving cancer treatment due to the risk of severe and even lethal complications. METHODS: molecular biology has revealed that different checkpoints contro

Short-Term Exposure to High Atmospheric Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) Severely Impacts Durum Wheat Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism in the Absence of Edaphic Water Stress.

Low atmospheric relative humidity (RH) accompanied by elevated air temperature and decreased precipitation are environmental challenges that wheat production will face in future decades. These changes to the atmosphere are causing increases in air vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and low soil water availability during certain periods of the wheat-growing season. The main objective of this study was to analyze the physiological, metabolic, and transcriptional response of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism of wheat (Triticum durum cv. Sula) to increases in VPD and soil water stress conditions, e

[Hydrogen sulfide acted as a downstream signal was involved in the regulation of salicylic acid on photosynthesis of cucumber seedlings under low temperature and low light intensity].

Both salicylic acid (SA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) play an important role in regulating plant growth and development and physiological metabolism under abiotic stresses. As signal molecules, the interaction between them in regulating cucumber photosynthesis under low temperature and low light is still unclear. Here, we examined the regulation and interaction of SA and H2S on photosynthesis in cucumber seedlings under low temperature (8 ℃/5 ℃, day/night) and low light (100 μmol·m-2·s-1). Seedlings were foliar-sprayed with SA, sodium sulfide (NaHS, H2S donor), and their scavenger or biosynthesi
