Deficits across multiple behavioral domains align with susceptibility to stress in 129S1/SvImJ mice.

Acute physical or psychological stress can elicit adaptive behaviors that allow an organism maintain homeostasis. However, intense and/or prolonged stressors often have the opposite effect, resulting in maladaptive behaviors and curbing goal-directed action; in the extreme, this may contribute to the development of psychiatric conditions like generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder. While treatment of these disorders generally focuses on reducing reactivity to potentially threatening stimuli, there are in fact impairments across multiple domai

OmicGlaze: Spatial Multi-Omic Mapping of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, giving rise to complex neurological complications that impact millions of individuals each year. Cellular stress and neuronal injury vary dramatically across cortical layers, vascular niches, and between the ipsilateral (injured) or contralateral (uninjured) hemispheres. There is a critical need for quantitative measures that capture the spatial distribution of injury-induced cellular changes, as well as the gene regulatory elements that drive them. Here, we developed OmicGlaze , an experimental and

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors for Treating Neurocognitive and Neuropsychiatric Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury: An Evaluation of Current Evidence.

The prevalence of neuropsychiatric disorders following traumatic brain injury (TBI) is 20%-50%, and disorders of mood and cognition may remain even after recovery of neurologic function is achieved. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) block the reuptake of serotonin in presynaptic cells to lead to increased serotonergic activity in the synaptic cleft, constituting first-line treatment for a variety of neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders. This review investigates the utility of SSRIs in treating post-TBI disorders. In total, 37 unique reports were consolidated from the Coch

Long-term effects of political imprisonment: a group comparison study.

The study investigated the long-term effects of political imprisonment in the former German Democratic Republic. A group of non-treatment-seeking former political prisoners (n = 146) was compared with an age- and sex-matched group (n = 75). Assessments included the structured Diagnostic Interview for Psychiatric Disorders (German abbreviation: DIPS) for DSM-III-R/-IV diagnoses, a checklist of persecution and maltreatment, and other self-rated measures of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and dissociation. PTSD was assessed by the DIPS as current and lifetime diagnoses

Dissociative symptom disorders in advanced nursing practice: background, treatment, and instrumentation to assess symptoms.

Less well-known among the psychiatric disorders, dissociation is one of the most common underlying symptoms of individuals seeking mental health care (Maldonado, 2001). Closely associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation characteristics may include inconsistent consciousness, autobiographical forgetfulness, difficulties in self-regulation, regressions, alternate identities, disorganization in the development of a cohesive sense of self, depersonalization, and derealization (Trickett, Noll, Reiffman & Putnam, 2001). The major constructs and dimensions of the dissociative sympto

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in anxiety disorders.

This review examines CBT as a leading evidence-based psychotherapy. It describes briefly the major components of CBT: exposure, reduction of safety behaviors, attention focus modification and cognitive restructuring. Specific CBT strategies suited for the main anxiety disorders are reported (specific phobias, panic disorder and agoraphobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder). The review emphasizes the efficiency of the use of CBT as a psychotherapeutic method in anxiety disorders. Finally, it points to the lack of the

On the basis of ten clinical cases of post emotional shock, the following aspects are discussed: the causal emotion and its characteristics, its psychological repercussions and the mechanisms involvent, the clinical patterns observed, both somatic and psychic, and their interpretation. Attention is called to the consequences of such emotions from the forensic view-point and the need to ascertain and specify the nature and intensity of the emotional trauma and the actual state of anxiety. Emphasis is laid on the difficulty of making expert appraisals and fixing equitable compensations, as exper

Case Report: Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis Presenting With Catatonic Symptoms in an Adolescent Female Patient With a History of Traumatic Exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Catatonia is a severe syndrome associated with a high proportion of underlying organic conditions including autoimmune encephalitis. The link between catatonia and psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders and schizophrenia spectrum disorders is well established while the causative effect of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders and stress related disorders remains speculative. CASE REPORT: Here we describe the clinical case of a 14-year-old female patient presenting to the Emergency Department of a Pediatric University Hospital with acute changes in behavior five days after a sex

Fetal origins of stress-related adult disease.

During the past decade, a considerable body of evidence has emerged showing that circumstances during the fetal period may have lifelong programming effects on different body functions with a considerable impact on disease susceptibility. The purpose of this article is to provide a synopsis of these findings and their role in explaining the development of stress-related adult disease. In the context of Per Björntorp memorial symposium, stress-related disease will be interpreted broadly, including cardiovascular disease and components of the metabolic syndrome, for which the evidence of fetal o

Practical assessment and evaluation of mental health problems following a mass disaster.

Almost all individuals who experience a severe trauma will develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) shortly after the traumatic event. Although the natural history of PTSD varies according to the type of trauma, most people do not develop enduring PTSD, and, in many of those who do, it resolves within 1 year without treatment. To the extent that is possible, maintenance of normal daily activities is believed to help patients cope more successfully in the aftermath of major trauma. In the case of a disaster such as the Asian tsunami, the whole community is involved, and it is im

Universal suicide risk assessment for veterans and soldiers in all healthcare settings: A nursing imperative.

PURPOSE: Suicide remains a major public health concern among U.S. veterans and active-duty military personnel. This narrative review examines evidence supporting routine suicide risk screening and considers its implementation as a clinically appropriate, trauma-informed process rather than an inflexible requirement at every encounter. METHODS: A structured narrative review used targeted searches of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus, supplemented by federal surveillance reports, clinical guidance, and policy documents. Evidence was synthesized across five domains: suicide prevalence and tre

Association between viewing more media war content and higher intention to use cannabis in adolescents: the indirect effect of post-traumatic stress.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflicts increased the risk of multifront war, especially with bordering countries like Lebanon. In addition, with the increased use of media, graphic war content is easily transmitted to adolescents without regulation. This has significantly impacted their lives, mentally and physically, leading to the search for coping mechanisms like cannabis use. However, the exact link between war media exposure and cannabis use intention is still uncertain. This study aims to assess the hypothesis that PTSD can be a key mediator in the association between war
