Leptospirosis in rodents from an arid environment.

Rodents (n = 358) were trapped from 6 locations in Arizona, including 2 dairies, 2 swine raising operations, and 2 areas where domestic animal access was limited. Isolates of Leptospira interrogans serovar ballum were obtained from 3 house mice (Mus musculus) trapped in dairies. Leptospira were seen in silver-stained kidney sections of 10.4% of the rodents. The usefulness of serologic data in detecting leptospiral infection in these rodents was uncertain because so few animals yielded isolates that valid comparisons of culture positives to serologic positives were not possible. Titers greater …

Host preference of mosquito vectors of Japanese encephalitis.

The host preference of 4 Culex mosquito species collected in Miaoli and Pingtung counties, Taiwan was studied by capillary precipitin method. Antisera to alum-precipitated sera of man, bovine, swine, rabbit, horse, dog, cat, mouse, chicken, duck, and pigeon were produced in rabbits and reacted with 758 mosquito blood meals among which reactions to one or more antisera. Culex annulus and Culex tritaeniorhynchus summorosus showed a great avidity for pig, and Culex fuscocephala for bovine. Culex pipiens fatigans was ornithophilic. None of 110 C. t. summorosus and 2.4% of 223 C. annulus had fed on…

The global increase in the use of dental implants also increases treatment-related complications. Peri-implantitis is a matter of concern at this stage. This study aimed to compare the behavior of an additive manufacturing implant with commercially available implants with different surface treatments, exposed or not to a peri-implantitis challenge. Eighty implants with three different surfaces (Straumann BLT [A], Noble Biocare Active [B], Plenum 3D printed titanium implants test [C], and Plenum 3D printed titanium implants served as a negative control [D]) were placed into male minipigs (Minip

Inhibitory Effects of Enoxolone on Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus In Vitro and In Vivo.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is characterized as an acute and highly contagious intestinal ailment induced by the PED virus (PEDV), presenting clinical symptoms such as emesis, diarrhea, and dehydration. The occurrence of PED has imposed a substantial economic burden on the global swine farming industry. The PEDV strain exhibits a proclivity for mutations, and the immune response elicited by traditional vaccines may prove ineffective against the virus. Meanwhile, given concerns about the tolerance to existing drugs. Consequently, there is an urgent necessity to develop novel anti PEDV drugs…

Experimental inoculation of pigs with porcine parainfluenza virus 1 revealed pathological manifestations in the upper respiratory tract.

Several pathogens are known to affect the respiratory tract of pigs resulting in decreased health and welfare. Porcine parainfluenza virus 1 (PPIV1) and swine orthopneumovirus (SOV) have been identified as novel viruses in pigs. The pathogenicity of PPIV1 has been investigated experimentally by one research group, whereas SOV is yet to be studied. In this experimental trial, two groups of eight pigs were inoculated with a European isolate of PPIV1 or a pool of SOV RNA-positive clinical nasal swab material, and one group of four pigs with culture medium only (negative controls). Nasal swab samp…

Yucatan Miniswine Model of Atrial Fibrillation: Clinical Relevance.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common chronic arrhythmia in adults in the United States and is associated with significant morbidity, including thromboembolic events, stroke, and heart failure. Despite available therapies such as catheter ablation and antiarrhythmic drugs, AFib remains incurable for many patients. Our study aims to develop a large-animal model of AFib in Yucatan miniswine to support investigation of new therapeutic approaches for this disease. METHODS: Yucatan miniswine were selected for their physiological similarity to humans and suitable si…

A Translational Surgical Porcine Model for Postoperative Intra-Abdominal Adhesion Formation.

A porcine model of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesion formation was established using Yucatan mini pigs. The protocol combines midline laparotomy, small bowel resection with two-layer primary anastomosis, and a unilateral, parietal peritoneal abrasion in the format of an open abdominal surgical procedure. Adhesion formation was assessed four weeks postoperatively using established gross and histologic scoring criteria, with evaluations performed by blinded observers. Adhesions developed in all animals using this model and were multifocal, involving bowel loops, between the bowel and abdomi

Pathogenesis of proliferative enteropathy caused by Lawsoniaintracellularis.

Proliferative enteropathy is a common infectious disease affecting pigs, horses and other animals; it is caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, an obligately intracellular bacterium. Lawsonia infection causes a distinctive pathological change, characterized by a rugose thickening of the intestinal mucosa, due to the adenomatous proliferation of immature intestinal crypt epithelial cells, with local depletion of goblet and enteroendocrine cells. The disease has a low infectious dose; transmission occurs readily between young animals via oral contact with infected faecal material derived from other

The dynamic shape changes of the tongue base during respiration, chewing and swallowing.

This study aimed to analyze dimensional deformations of the tongue base during respiration, chewing, and swallowing. Eight 7-8-month-old Yucatan minipigs were used. Under deep sedation, eight 2mm ultrasonic piezoelectric (SONO) crystals were implanted in the tongue base forming a cubic-shaped configuration, representing right/left dorsal and ventral lengths, anterior/posterior dorsal and ventral widths, and right/left anterior and posterior thicknesses. Next, 8 pairs of electromyographic (EMG) microelectrodes were inserted into the tongue, jaw, hyoid, pharyngeal, and palatal muscles. SONO and

Influence of the intrauterine application of a phytotherapeutic agent and other parameters on the uterine involution of sows in a free farrowing system.

Endometritis and postpartum dysgalactiae syndrome are common postpartum disorders in sows revealing antimicrobial treatment. This study evaluated the influence of the intrauterine application of a phytotherapeutic agent (EucaComp©) after farrowing containing essences of marjoram, marigold, melissa and eucalyptus and other sow-related parameters on the uterine involution. In total, 150 Landrace x Large white sows (parity 1-9) were divided randomly into three groups (no intervention (Control), 300 ml sodium chloride (Placebo) and 300 ml of phytotherapeutic agent (Phytotherapeutic)). Amyloid A amyloidosis associated with Streptococcus suis infection in a young commercial pig with wild-type serum amyloid A.

Amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis is a progressive disease caused by the deposition of AA, an abnormally folded protein derived from serum amyloid A (SAA), in organs throughout the body. AA amyloidosis occurs in various mammals and birds but is extremely rare in commercial pigs. A possible reason for this is that a variant SAA is crucial for the onset of AA amyloidosis in pigs. However, AA amyloidosis with wild-type SAA was recently reported in microminipigs, which are the smallest laboratory pigs, leaving the importance of this variant unclear. This is a report of the involvement of wild-type SAA in

Applicability of a four-gene set for H-ARS severity prediction in peripheral blood samples of irradiated minipigs.

PURPOSE: The fast diagnosis of the life-threatening acute radiation syndrome is crucial, as the early prediction of the hematological acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS) can save lives. Previously, we validated a four-gene set (FDXR, DDB2, POU2AF1, WNT3) for H-ARS severity prediction in non-human primates and leukemia patients. In this study, we aim to validate this gene set in minipigs as a surrogate model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 12 Göttingen minipigs, irradiated with 1.8 or 2.1 Gray (LD≈40/30), were examined. METREPOL H-ARS severity degrees were determined using sequential blood cell count cha

Efficacy of genetically modified Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae strains and their effect on local and cell-mediated immune responses in pigs.

Vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is still carried out worldwide, but unfortunately current commercial vaccines only provide partial protection. Therefore, two M. hyopneumoniae strains were genetically modified by transposon-mediated gene disruption of mmsA and mnuA, encoding methylmalonate semialdehyde dehydrogenase and membrane nuclease A, respectively. We investigated how immune responses elicited by these genetically modified M. hyopneumoniae strains protected pigs against challenge infection. An endotracheal single dose vaccination with genetically modified M. hyopneumoniae str

Intrauterine growth restriction disrupts folliculogenesis in gilts: Insights into reproductive health.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is defined as a condition in which the fetus does not reach its full growth potential with serious consequences later in life. This study evaluated, by means of histomorphometrical analysis, the follicular development in normal weight (NW) and IUGR gilts along postnatal development. Fifty pairs of littermate gilts were selected at birth and allocated into two experimental groups according to birthweight: IUGR (0.8-1.0 kg) and NW (1.4-1.7 kg). Euthanasia was performed at three stages: birth, 100 days, and 150 days of age, when body and organ weights were m

Treatment with oxfendazole increased levels of cardiac troponin I in pigs naturally infected with Taenia solium cysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: Experimental pigs have been used to study human Taenia solium cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis. Biomarkers such as cardiac troponin I (cTnI) have been used to study various disease states such acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and the effect these diseases have on this molecule. However, no studies have been done to establish the effect of anthelminthic treatment on cTnI in pigs with cysticercosis and the role this biomarker plays with regards to inflammation following treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of anthelminthic treatment on cardiac troponin I (cTnI) level

Quantifying feral pig interactions to inform disease transmission networks.

Feral pigs threaten biodiversity in 54 countries and cause an estimated $120 billion in damages annually in the USA. They endanger over 600 native species and have driven 14 to extinction. Additionally, they pose a significant zoonotic disease risk, carrying pathogens such as Brucella, leptospirosis, and Japanese encephalitis. Understanding and controlling disease spread relies on models of social dynamics, but these vary widely across regions, limiting the transferability of findings from the USA and Europe to other locations like Australia. This study addresses this gap by analysing the soci

The anti-inflammatory effects of Fuzapladib in an endotoxemic porcine model.

Endotoxemia is a systemic inflammatory condition caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, which produces inflammatory cytokines. Fuzapladib (FZP) inhibits the activation of adhesion molecules found on the surface of inflammatory cells, mitigating inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of fuzapladib on inflammatory cytokines and cardio-respiratory function using an LPS-induced endotoxemic porcine model. Fifteen pigs were separated into three groups: low-FZP (n=5), high-FZP (n=5), and control (n=5). Pigs were administered LPS under general anesthesia, and comple

Orthotopic forelimb transplantation in a Yucatan minipig model: Anatomic and in vivo study.

INTRODUCTION: Above elbow transplants represent 19% of the upper extremity transplants. Previous large-animal models have been too distal or heterotopic, did not use immunosuppression and had short survival. We hypothesize that an orthotopic forelimb transplant model, under standard immunosuppression, is feasible and can be used to address questions on peri-transplant ischemia reperfusion injury, and post-transplantation vascular, immunologic, infectious, and functional outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four forelimbs were used for anatomical studies. Four mock transplants were performed to es
