Differential gray and white matter alterations in children with complete and incomplete spinal cord injuries: a preliminary MRI study using voxel-based morphometry and tract-based spatial statistics.

Brain gray matter (GM) and white matter alterations have been studied in pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. However, the differences in brain reorganization between complete SCI (CSCI) and incomplete SCI (ICSCI) remain unclear. The objective of the study was to explore the different effects of CSCI and ICSCI on brain structure in pediatric patients. A total of 68 children with SCI (37 with CSCI and 31 with ICSCI) and 36 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. The clinical data on motor and sensory scores, degree of injury, duration of injury, and age at the time of injury w

Neural correlates of laparoscopic training: a preliminary study.

Minimally invasive surgery involves complex hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and depth perception skills that require extensive training. This pilot study aims to characterize the electrophysiological (EEG) activity associated with laparoscopic surgery training. Sixteen participants, without prior laparoscopic experience, performed a hand-eye coordination task using a simulator. The task involved moving 50 spheres between two compartments using sensorized laparoscopic tools to monitor hand usage and movement time. On a cohort of nine subjects, we collected high-density EEG and analysed oscill

Modeling neural contrast sensitivity functions in human visual cortex.

The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) characterizes visual function, and iswidely used in research on visual perception and ophthalmological disorders. TheCSF describes the lowest contrast level that participants can perceive as afunction of spatial frequency. Here, we present a new method to estimate theneural equivalent of the CSF that describes how a population of neurons respondsto contrast as a function of spatial frequency. Using functional magneticresonance imaging (fMRI) at 7 Tesla, we measured neural responses whileparticipants viewed gratings that varied systematically in contrast

Classifier Effect Masked by Taxonomic Relations: Through the Lens of a Similarity Judgment Task.

Classifiers, as a reference-tracking device of nouns, have caught much research attention over the past two decades. Beyond their grammatical function, classifiers are unique in their semantic association with the internal properties of head nouns, which raises questions about the relationship between language and cognition. Previous research reported a classifier effect (e.g., Saalbach and Imai in Lang Cogn Processes 27(3):381-428, 2012; Speed et al. in J Exp Psychol Learn Memory Cogn 7(4):625-640, 2021), with classifier speakers (vs. non-classifier speakers) showing greater sensitivity to pa

Quality of life of women with urinary incontinence in the postpartum period: an integrative literature review.

Urinary incontinence (UI) during pregnancy and after childbirth can negatively impact women's lifestyles, health, and well-being. It is a common problem that is often normalized by both healthcare professionals and women. This integrative review examines the influence of UI on women's quality of life (QoL) during the postpartum period and identifies the main affected domains. It will also contribute to the discussion of the results of a primary study. Fourteen studies were included in this review, mainly from Brazil and Spain, with most using quantitative methods. The findings indicate that UI

Deprescribing Self-Administered Epinephrine: Why, Who, and When?

Epinephrine is established as the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis. Self-administered epinephrine (self-epi) is widely prescribed to patients considered at higher risk of future reactions. However, ongoing provision of self-epi is not without consequences: there is a financial cost, and evidence suggests that self-epi has a negative impact on quality of life by reinforcing a patient's perception of vulnerability. The decision to prescribe or continue self-epi therefore requires balancing clinical evidence with patient preferences through shared decision making. Importantly, self-epi should

Identification of autoantibodies against HIF1a in patients with anorexia nervosa and their potential role in hepatic cytolysis.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe, potentially life-threatening psychiatric disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, a distorted body perception and an extern food restriction leading to an abnormally low body weight. In AN patients, malnutrition is often associated with hepatic cytolysis. A growing body of evidence support an association between AN and auto-immunity. In this exploratory study, we revealed for the first-time the presence of autoantibodies targeting hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1a) in AN. We evidenced the presence of autoantibodies against HIF1a in 22%

Novel insights into asthma pathophysiology and pharmacological interventions: spiral of respiratory symptoms and psychiatric episodes.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common respiratory disorder with airway inflammation and alterations. Included among comorbidities with asthma are psychiatric conditions; however, it is unclear how these disorders engaging with each other. FINDINGS: In type-2-high asthma, allergens cause airway type-2 immune responses with respiratory symptoms. When the patients experience high blood levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, they can promote reactive glial cell-induced neuroinflammation and hyperactivation of the thalamus, insula, and cingulate cortex, responsible for interoceptive states, as well

Investigating plasticity of the olfactory system through the lens of specific anosmia.

The olfactory experiences vary widely among individuals. Despite having an otherwise normal sense of smell, some people exhibit specific anosmia, i.e., the inability to detect certain odorants. While genetic factors play a key role in this phenomenon, olfactory perception is also influenced by environment, and repeated exposure to odors (olfactory training) can enhance olfactory sensitivity. In this study, we examined whether olfactory training increases sensitivity towards odors participants were specifically anosmic to, and preliminary investigated whether this training-induced change is sta

Design and evaluation of a voltage-controlled current source for galvanic vestibular stimulation research.

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) is a non-invasive technique that stimulates the vestibular system, which is crucial for maintaining balance and processing spatial orientation. The integration between the visual and vestibular systems, known as Oculo-Vestibular Recoupling (OVR), has shown promising potential in reducing motion sickness and enhancing immersion in Extended Reality (XR). However, a noticeable challenge in GVS research is the lack of open-sourced devices, with most studies relying on self-made prototypes or constant current power supplies. The prototyping of such devices nece

Spatiotemporal hierarchies of face representation in the human ventral temporal cortex.

In this study, we examined the relatively unexplored realm of face perception, investigating the activities within human brain face-selective regions during the observation of faces at both subordinate and superordinate levels. We recorded intracranial EEG signals from the ventral temporal cortex in neurosurgical patients implanted with subdural electrodes during viewing of face subcategories (human, mammal, bird, and marine faces) as well as various non-face control stimuli. The results revealed a noteworthy correlation in response patterns across all face-selective areas in the ventral tempo

Corrective mechanisms of motion extrapolation.

Transmission and processing of sensory information in the visual system takes time. For motion perception, our brain can overcome this intrinsic neural delay through extrapolation mechanisms and accurately predict the current position of a continuously moving object. But how does the system behave when the motion abruptly changes and the prediction becomes wrong? Here we address this question by studying the perceived position of a moving object with various abrupt motion changes by human observers. We developed a task in which a bar is monotonously moving horizontally, and then motion suddenl

Novel Clinical Manifestation and Favorable Treatment Outcome of Cochlear Implant in a Chinese Family With Likely Pathogenic Variant of the P2RX2 Gene.

The rapid development and clinical application of sequencing technologies enable the genetic diagnosis of inherited deafness. P2RX2, as the gene responsible for autosomal dominant non-syndromic deafness-41 (DFNA41), has been proven to be essential for life-long normal hearing and for the protection of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Our present study reports a missense variant in the P2RX2 gene (c.178G > T (p.V60L)), for the second time worldwide, in a five-generation kindred living in Henan, China. Despite carrying the same variant, the affected members in this family appear to present wit

Distinct connectivity patterns between perception and attention-related brain networks characterize dyslexia: Machine learning applied to resting-state fMRI.

Diagnosis of dyslexia often occurs in late schooling years, leading to academic and psychological challenges. Furthermore, diagnosis is time-consuming, costly, and reliant on arbitrary cutoffs. On the other hand, automated algorithms hold great potential in medical and psychological diagnostics. The aim of the present study was to develop a machine learning tool for the detection of dyslexia in children based on the intrinsic connectivity patterns of different brain networks underlying perception and attention. Here, 117 children (8-12 years old; 58 females; 52 typical readers; TR and 65 child

Differences in landing biomechanics in the presence of delayed onset muscle soreness following or not active recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) can reduce joint range of motion and strength, cause edema, and increase joint stiffness. Here we set out to determine whether quadriceps DOMS followed by an active recovery low-intensity exercise alters jump landing biomechanics. METHODS: 3D landing kinematics, kinetics, and DOMS were evaluated in 26 healthy adults (15 women) performing drop and vertical jump landings before and after a squat protocol to induce quadriceps DOMS. In the presence of DOMS, half of the participants (n = 13) performed a low-intensity exercise for active recovery (10-
