The use of flash visual evoked potentials in the early diagnosis of suspected optic nerve lesions due to craniofacial trauma.

Craniofacial trauma encroaching on the orbital apex and optic canal can result in direct or indirect optic nerve lesions, leading to visual impairment or blindness. Early diagnosis of a visual loss and immediate therapy are generally considered crucial for a successful restoration of vision in indirect trauma. However, in comatose or sedated patients the assessment of optic nerve function by testing pupillary reactivity may be severely compromised or impossible because of tensely swollen eyelids, conjunctival oedema, concussion of the ciliary muscle or pharmacological effects. In the event tha

Compound electrolyte intraocular irrigating solution produces better effects on vision recovery of cataract patients after surgery than Ringer lactate solution.

PURPOSE: Intraocular irrigating solution is extensively applied in cataract surgery. This paper explored the difference and relationship between optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical quality analysis system (OQAS) parameters induced by compound electrolyte intraocular irrigating solution (CEIIS) or Ringer lactate (RL) solution during uncomplicated cataract surgery. METHODS: Totally 200 senior cataract patients were randomly divided into the CEIIS and RL groups (N = 100 patients/group). The anterior chamber was irrigated by CEIIS or RL during phacoemulsification. Patients were subdivi

Chiari Malformation Type I With Concurrent Bilateral Optic Disc Drusen: Is Follow-up Necessary?

Pseudopapilledema caused by optic disc drusen (ODD) mimics the appearance of papilledema and usually presents as a diagnostic challenge. A young boy with known Chiari malformation type 1 (CM-1) was referred to the pediatric ophthalmology clinic for eye assessment to exclude papilledema due to elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Despite the ophthalmic examination revealing bilateral optic disc elevation, multimodal imaging techniques such as fundus autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and B-scan ultrasonography are recommended to confirm the distinction between bilateral ODD

Synchronous optic and pineal pilocytic astrocytomas in a paediatric patient with neurofibromatosis type 1.

A 12-year-old girl with neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with headache, visual acuity and visual field disturbance. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enhanced solid mass involving her right optic nerve and optic chiasm, and a cystic lesion in the pineal region that had resulted in obstructive hydrocephalus. An open biopsy of the right optic nerve tumour was performed, and it was histologically identified as a pilocytic astrocytoma. Local irradiation of 50 Gy to the optic pathway tumour was performed, and the tumour has remained stable for more than 29 months. On

Optic glioma with intraocular tumor and seeding in a child with neurofibromatosis.

We treated a 3-year-old boy with neurofibromatosis who had an optic glioma, intraocular extension with seeding, and iris tumors. On the basis of results of ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and fine needle aspiration, other intraocular and orbital tumors were excluded. Because of the malignant intraocular aspect, the optic nerve glioma was extirpated. Histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of an optic nerve glioma with intraocular extension, seeding, and iris nodules. In this juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma with secondary perineural fibrous hyperplasia, s
