OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical and baseline polysomnographic data on obstructive sleep apnoea secondary to adenotonsillar hypertrophy in Hong Kong Chinese children.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong.
PARTICIPANTS: Fifty children (35 boys and 15 girls) suspected to have obstructive sleep apnoea were recruited between January 1999 and December 1999.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Symptoms questionnaire, electrocardiogram, chest radiograph, and full-night polysomnography.

Ovine scrapie is a member of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), a heterogeneous family of fatal neurologic disorders characterized by deposition of an abnormal isoform (prion protein [PrP] PrP-Sc) of a cellular sialoglycoprotein in neural tissue. Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a disease traditionally defined by a triad of clinical, laboratory, and serologic factors. It is typically a benign, self-limited disease of children and young adults. Upper airway obstruction is a rare but potentially fatal complication of IM resulting from massive tonsillar enlargement, pharyngeal edema, or both. We report a case of sudden death due to airway obstruction in IM.

A prospective study was carried out on 25 patients showing symptoms suggestive of peritonsillar abscess. Twelve patients were treated with i.v. antibiotics and three months later underwent tonsillectomy. Thirteen patients underwent acute tonsillectomy within 24-48 hours. In order to evaluate the benefits of acute tonsillectomy we compared three parameters; operation length, intraoperative bleeding and overall length of hospitalization.
