Giant cervical facet joint osteophyte causing myelopathy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylosis frequently leads to osteophyte formation to stabilize degenerative spinal segments. While osteophytes presenting with cervical myelopathy typically arise from the vertebral body, a cervical facet joint osteophyte causing spinal cord compression has not been described. OBSERVATIONS: This report details the case of a 57-year-old right-handed male waiter with progressive myelopathy. Imaging confirmed a 2-cm calcified extradural mass at the C5 level causing significant spinal cord compression. Surgery revealed a giant osteophyte originating from the right C5-6 fac…

Chest CT-determined sarcopenia is associated with poorer functional outcomes in osteoarthritis patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty: a retrospective cohort study.

Sarcopenia diagnosed via opportunistic computed tomography (CT) is linked to poor postoperative outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between chest CT-diagnosed sarcopenia and post-total knee arthroplasty (TKA) functional outcomes. This single-center retrospective cohort study included 158 knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients who underwent primary TKA between January 2021 and June 2022. Sarcopenia was defined using skeletal muscle index values derived from chest CT images at the T12 vertebral level. Sociodemographic, clinical, and perioperative data were collected, and functi

Osseous bridging of the condylar fossa: report of a rare anatomical variation at the outer skull base.

PURPOSE: The topic of osseous variations of the craniocervical junction is a complex morphological and embryological chapter of human anatomy, with a possible impact on neurogical and vascular functionality in this morphological variable region. MATERIAL & METHODS: An until now undescribed anatomical variation of the exoccipital part of the occipital bone has been observed after maceration at the outer skull base of a West-European 68-year-old male body donor. RESULTS: On both sites of the foramen magnum accessory osseous processes were observed that arise from the jugular process and point

CT and MRI scans revealed osteolysis of the L2/3 vertebral body and a paraspinal abscess in the left psoas muscle. In addition to the more common benign conditions, spinal pain can also be caused by malignant lesions and severe inflammatory conditions. Be … n the 8th thoracic vertebra with a hyperintense, cumulative pattern along the lower endplate of the vertebral body. Biopsy sampling was performed to clarify the exact etiology. A case of posterior mediastinal Müllerian cyst characterized by morphology of serous papillary cystadenoma.

BACKGROUND: Müllerian cysts of the posterior mediastinum are rare, benign lesions typically discovered incidentally via routine medical exams. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a distinctive case of a 49-year-old asymptomatic woman, illustrating a rare Müllerian cyst located in the posterior mediastinum with serous papillary cystadenoma-like features, a novel finding in the medical literature. Identified during a routine health screening in December 2020, a 20 mm cystic lesion adjacent to the T4-5 vertebral body was detected through chest CT and MRI, initially suggesting a neurogenic tumor. Histo…

Neurological impairments and spine deformities are caused by progressive damage to the anterior vertebral body. The clinical, radiographic, microbiological, and histological data are used to make the diagnosis of spinal TB. Nonhepatic Alagille Syndrome Associated With Predominant Cardioskeletal Anomalies: A Rare Case.

Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder with multisystem involvement including the liver, heart, skeleton, eyes, kidneys, and other organ systems, along with characteristic facial abnormalities. Some patients with ALGS may have isolated involvement of a particular system, such as a heart defect like the tetralogy of Fallot, an atrial septal defect (ASD), a characteristic facial appearance, or an isolated vertebral body anomaly. These individuals may or may not have liver anomalies or other features typically seen in the disorder. We report the case of a four-year…

The impact of ossification spread on cervical spine function in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a progressive disease. The bridging of ossified lesions to the vertebral body gradually increases, thereby decreasing the mobility of the cervical spine; thus, cervical spine function may decrease over time. However, cervical spine function in patients with cervical OPLL has not been evaluated in large prospective studies. Therefore, we conducted a prospective multicenter study to clarify whether ossification spread can influence cervical spine function and quality of life (QOL) in patients with cervical OPLL. In total, 238 patients…

3D-printed Titanium Prosthetic Reconstruction of the C2 Vertebra: Techniques and Outcomes of Three Consecutive Cases.

STUDY DESIGN: Three patients were treated at our center with patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)-printed titanium prostheses for the reconstruction of structurally compromised C2 vertebrae. OBJECTIVE: To describe our surgical and device design approach to these clinical scenarios and evaluate their outcomes. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There are a limited but increasing number of case reports and series describing the use of 3D-printed prostheses for high cervical surgery. METHODS: We have collated and reviewed three cases using patient-specific 3D-printed prostheses. RESULTS: We repor

The phytoestrogen glabrene prevents osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats through upregulation of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

This study systematically investigated the effects of phytoestrogen glabrene on postmenopausal osteoporosis in an ovariectomy (OVX) rat model. Glabrene administration (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) for 13 weeks can significantly slow down the body weight gain and slightly increase the uterus weight of OVX rats. The increased levels of U-Ca, U-P levels, urine DPD/creatinine, serum ALP, OCN, triglycerides, and total cholesterol induced by OVX were dramatically inhibited in rats, whereas no difference occurred for S-Ca and S-P in all groups. Furthermore, glabrene can enhance bone mineral density of the

Posterior osteotomy techniques for rigid cervical deformity correction.

Posterior cervical osteotomies are powerful techniques for the correction of rigid cervical deformity. These include a variety of subtypes i … rmed with significant care. The CWO is similar to an OWO with the addition of an osteotomy into the vertebral body that is closed like a pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO). The goal of this review article is to summarize posterior osteotomy techniques for cervical deformity correction.

Posttraumatic thoracic epidural capillary hemangioma - A rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Capillary hemangiomas are benign vascular lesions commonly seen in subcutaneous tissues. The most common site of origin is from the vertebral body, and only a few cases of isolated lesions in thoracic epidural space, especially after trauma, have been reported in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of 63-year-old male with progressive bilateral lower limb weakness and exaggerated lower limb deep tendon reflexes without bowel and bladder involvement. His history revealed T7 fracture with paraparesis which was treated surgically, and implants were removed a year later…
