Child Abuse in Natural Disasters and Conflicts: A Systematic Review.

Violence against children affects a significant portion of youth around the world. Emergencies and natural disasters escalate the risk due to weakened child protection systems and disruption of preventative mechanisms. In this systematic review, 692 related papers were searched in various databases in the initial search. After review, 11 papers were finally selected for full review. These papers were selected based on publication date, relevance to emergencies, their geographical area type of violence, age of subjects, and their gender. Most families affected by natural disasters, especially t…

"Being Treated Like an Infant Who Doesn't Know Anything" Obstetric Violence From Perspectives of Women, Health Care Providers and Key Community Informants in Central Zone Tanzania: A Qualitative Exploratory Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Violence during pregnancy, childbirth and after childbirth is a critical issue globally. There remains a lack of consensus on operational definitions of the components across different cultures globally since the definitions of respect, disrespect and violence can differ among cultures, traditions and places. Obstetric violence presents a significant barrier to seeking facility-based care during pregnancy and childbirth and instead women may opt for home deliveries with unskilled attendants. As a result, some experience complications thus contributing to the high prevalence of mate…

Novel polymorphisms in TICAM2 and NOD1 associated with tuberculosis progression phenotypes in Ethiopian populations.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about violence against children in refugee camps and settlements, and the evidence-base concerning mental health outcomes of youth in refugee settings in low and middle-income countries is similarly small. Evidence is needed to understand patterns of violence against children in refugee camps, and associations with adverse mental health outcomes. METHODS: Surveys were conducted with adolescent refugees (aged 13-17) in two refugee contexts - Kiziba Camp, Rwanda (n = 129) (refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo) and Adjumani and Kiryandongo refugee settlements, U…

A Prospective Analysis of Associations Between Changes in Mental Health and Men's Perpetration of Intimate Partner Violence: Post-Hoc Analysis of Young Men Involved in the Stepping Stones and Creating Futures Trial.

Men's poor mental health is increasingly recognised as a causal factor for their perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV); however, the majority of studies are from high-income countries and cross-sectional. We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected as part of a randomised controlled trial, among young (ages 18-30 years) men, living in urban informal settlements in eThekwini Municipality, South Africa, to assess whether: (a) changes in depression symptoms, and (b) changes in post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, were prospectively associated with IPV perpetration, after 2-year…

'. . . there's so much within the work that we do where all we kind of need is the space and the safety': The experiences of Australian practitioners who support autistic survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

Research has found that autistic women experience elevated rates of sexual and domestic violence and may benefit from accessing support to recover. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Australian practitioners and the approaches they use to support the recovery needs of autistic women who are survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 Australian practitioners to capture their experiences of supporting autistic women who are survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Data from these interviews were analysed using a reflexive thematic a…

Testing the effectiveness of the Responsible, Engaged, and Loving Fathers (REAL Fathers) intervention for improving early childhood development and reducing family violence in Uganda: Study protocol for a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Witnessing and experiencing violence impedes children's healthy development and learning, inhibits positive relationships, provokes low self-esteem and emotional distress, and can lead to self-harm and aggressive behavior across the life course. Evidence-based programs are needed that incorporate violence prevention strategies alongside methods to improve wellbeing and healthy development for children and their families. This trial evaluates the Responsible, Engaged, and Loving Fathers (REAL Fathers) intervention, a Ugandan-led multilevel community-based mentoring program for young…

Global, regional, and national burdens of interpersonal violence in young women aged 10-24 years from 1990 to 2019: a trend analysis based on the global burden of disease study 2019.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence (IPV) against young women, including physical and sexual violence, poses a major threat to public health. We analyzed global, regional and national trends in violence against females aged 10-24 years from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: We extracted age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPRs) of physical violence by firearm (PVF), physical violence by other means (PVOM), physical violence by sharp object (PVSO), and sexual violence (SV) from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019. Joinpoint regression analysis calculated annual and average…

Gender violence, poverty and HIV infection risk among persons engaged in the sex industry: cross-national analysis of the political economy of sex markets in 30 European and Central Asian countries.

OBJECTIVES: Persons engaged in the sex industry are at greater risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections than the general population. One major factor is exposure to higher levels of risky sexual activity. Expanding condom use is a critical prevention strategy, but this requires negotiation with those buying sex, which takes place in the context of cultural and economic constraints. Impoverished individuals who fear violence are more likely to forego condoms. METHODS: Here we tested the hypotheses that poverty and fear of violence are two structural drivers of HIV infection risk i…

The Social Health Intervention Project (SHIP): protocol for a randomized controlled clinical trial assessing the effectiveness of a brief motivational intervention for problem drinking and intimate partner violence in an urban emergency department.

BACKGROUND: There is a strong reciprocal association between two highly prevalent public health problems: intimate partner violence and heavy drinking, both of which remain major sources of morbidity and mortality. Brief interventions in the Emergency Department setting have been found to be effective in reducing alcohol-related injury but neither classic intimate partner violence nor substance abuse interventions have adequately integrated assessment and treatment for these co-occurring conditions. The overall goal of this study is to determine whether a motivational intervention delivered at…

Media coverage, fake news, and the diffusion of xenophobic violence: A fine-grained county-level analysis of the geographic and temporal patterns of arson attacks during the German refugee crisis 2015-2017.

Over the year of 2015, about 800.000 refugees arrived in Germany, a number which equals around one percent of the total population. This migration process was labelled the refugee crisis and was accompanied by a contested debate. On the one hand, there was a widespread willingness to voluntarily help arriving refugees, on the other hand, the number of xenophobic attacks against refugees drastically increased. Our paper will focus on a specific form of xenophobic violence with a strong symbolic meaning: We analyze how arson attacks against collective accommodation facilities spread. Using a com…

"If he could speak, he would be able to point out who does those things to him": Experiences of violence and access to child protection among children with disabilities in Uganda and Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing evidence that children with disabilities face an increased risk of violence globally. While child protection mechanisms to prevent and respond to violence-including formal government systems and more informal programmes and activities run by local communities or NGOs-are slowly becoming operationalised in low- and- middle-income countries, little is known about whether existing mechanisms are disability-inclusive. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of children with disabilities' experiences of violence and their access to available child p…
