Invisible foes: how air pollution and lifestyle conspire in the rise of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a recognized risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC), but its specific impact in China, especially among older populations, remains underexplored. METHODS: We used multivariable Cox models with restricted cubic splines to assess the dose-response relationship between air pollution and CRC risk. Subgroup analyses by sex, residence (urban vs. rural) and pre-existing health conditions (hypertension, diabetes) were conducted. Mediation analysis assessed the indirect effects of smoking and alcohol on CRC risk. RESULTS: Exposure to PM2.5, NO2 and SO2 was linked to incr

Safety and feasibility of intermediate-dose post-transplant cyclophosphamide for graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis.

Post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) is widely used for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis in allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT). However, the optimal dosing of PTCy remains uncertain. In this case series, we evaluated intermediate-dose PTCy (25–30 mg/kg/day on Days 3 and 4) in 11 consecutive patients treated at our center between February 2023 and November 2024. Outcomes regarding engraftment were compared to our center’s historical cohort, which received standard-dose PTCy. All 11 patients achieved neutrophil engraftment, and 10 achieved platelet engraftment. M

The Landscape of Structural Variation in Aye-Ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis).

Aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis) are one of the 25 most critically endangered primate species in the world. Endemic to Madagascar, their small and highly fragmented populations make them particularly vulnerable to both genetic disease and anthropogenic environmental changes. Over the past decade, conservation genomic efforts have largely focused on inferring and monitoring population structure based on single nucleotide variants to identify and protect critical areas of genetic diversity. However, the recent release of a highly contiguous genome assembly allows, for the first time, for

Climate Change and Reproductive Health.

Climate change is a major threat to the world's population and is due to global warming from human activities that increase atmospheric greenhouse gas levels-burning fossil fuels, industry emissions, vehicular exhaust, and aerosol chlorofluorocarbons-that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere and adversely impact air quality. Resulting higher global temperatures, extreme weather events, and rising sea levels lead to greater frequency of wildfires and floods, which, in turn, result in population displacements and threaten air and water quality, food and water security, economic and public health

An infant brucellosis meningitis caused by Brucella strain.

Brucellosis poses a significant health threat to the population, particularly to vulnerable populations, including infants. In this investigation, we retrospectively analyzed the infection source and potential transmission route in a three-month-old infant with febrile seizure. Bacteriology methods, epidemiological survey, Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT), and standard tube agglutination test (SAT) were used to diagnose the disease, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was applied to identify the strain. The study revealed that the infant

Do women attending antenatal clinics who use only intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp) have higher Plasmodium falciparum prevalence compared to those who used both IPTp and slept under insecticide-treated nets?

BACKGROUND: As global malaria incidence continues to increase across sub-Saharan Africa, tightening usage of existing prevention strategies is crucial for protection of vulnerable populations. Nigeria alone accounted for more than a quarter of the 247 million cases in 2021. During pregnancy, Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPTp) and use of Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are recommended for malaria prevention. METHODS: This study sought to determine whether the combined use of IPTp and ITNs offered better protection from Plasmodium falciparum infection compared to a single strategy alone.

Pulmonary toxoplasmosis in a multiple myeloma patient: A Case report and literature review.

Pulmonary toxoplasmosis is a rare but potentially fatal opportunistic infection, most often reported in HIV-infected individuals. Its occurrence in non-HIV immunocompromised patients-particularly those with hematologic malignancies like multiple myeloma (MM)-is exceedingly rare and diagnostically challenging due to nonspecific clinical and radiologic features. While Toxoplasma gondii infection is typically mild in immunocompetent hosts, it can cause severe disease in immunocompromised populations. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar (January 2000-May 2025

Effect of prolonged cooking on pro-vitamin A levels of biofortified East African highland bananas.

Genetically modified East African highland bananas (EAHBs) with elevated levels of pro-vitamin A (pVA) have been developed to address vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in Uganda. The green, mature fruits of EAHBs are traditionally prepared into "matooke," a soft, savory dish made by peeling, steaming, and mashing the fruit. Biofortifying such a culturally embedded food offers an effective approach to improving nutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations. Field trials of pVA-biofortified EAHBs have been conducted at four locations across Uganda, with data collection nearing completion. Howeve

Phenotypic and genotypic differences between bloodstream and non-blood Candida krusei isolates: implications for invasiveness and antifungal susceptibility.

Candida krusei is an opportunistic pathogen with intrinsic resistance to fluconazole. This study analyzed 174 C. krusei isolates from bloodstream infections (BSI, n = 115) and non-blood sources (n = 59). Biochemical profiling using the VITEK 2 YST ID Card revealed a significant difference in the TyrA reaction between BSI and non-blood isolates (P < 0.05). Antifungal susceptibility testing via CLSI broth microdilution and Sensititre YeastOne showed that BSI isolates were more susceptible to echinocandins and azoles than non-blood strains, with minor MIC discrepancies between methods. Morbidity and Mortality Profile of Leishmaniasis in an Andean Region of Ecuador in the Context of Climate Change.

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by female sandflies of the genus Lutzomyia. Ecuador is divided into three distinct natural regions: the Andes, the Coast, and Amazonia, each characterized by significant variations in altitude and climate. While most reported cases of leishmaniasis are associated with humid, low-altitude rural areas, our study uncovered an unexpected trend: confirmed cases occurring in traditionally cold Andean regions. To investigate this issue, we conducted a cross-sectional ecological study using official morbidity and mortality records from the Ecuadorian He

Surface molecules of Leishmania: From virulence determinants to therapeutic and vaccine targets.

Leishmaniasis is a group of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania that affect vulnerable populations in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease manifests in cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral clinical forms. This major public health disease presents high morbidity, and despite the global impact of leishmaniasis, there are few therapeutic options available and no currently licensed human vaccines. Besides, the available therapeutic agents are associated with high toxicity and treatment failure. These limitations highlight the importance of ident

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant public health threat, particularly in vulnerable populations. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) have been a cornerstone of malaria prevention efforts for decades. ITNs have demonstrably reduced malaria morbidity and mortality. However, their widespread use has raised concerns about a potential unintended consequence: environmental pollution. METHODS: To assess the potential environmental impact of ITNs in a real-world setting, a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) survey was conducted in Djougou, a high malaria burden in Northen Benin.
