INTRODUCTION: The study identified groups of JUUL using young adults based on their use patterns and compared harm perceptions, JUUL dependence, and other tobacco product use among these groups.
METHODS: Online cross-sectional survey data were gathered in March 2019 from 667 undergraduate students who used JUUL weekly (50.4% females, average age: 20.3 years) at a southwest U.S. university.
RESULTS: Latent class analysis identified four groups of young adults who used JUUL: 1) Light Social JUUL Using Young Adults (LS, 52.5%) who used JUUL occasionally with friends when drinking alcohol, 2) Da

The young brain is highly sensitive to environmental influences that can cause long-term changes in neuronal function, possibly through altered gene expression. The endogenous opioid system continues to mature after birth and because of its involvement in reward, an inadequate maturation of this system could lead to enhanced susceptibility for alcohol use disorder. Recent studies show that the classical reward areas nucleus accumbens and ventral tegmental area are less affected by early life stress whereas endogenous opioids in non-classical areas, e.g. dorsal striatum and amygdala, are highly

Topical corticosteroid phobia is an important problem in the treatment of atopic dermatitis as it can affect the ability to control disease severity and itch by reducing treatment adherence. Topical corticosteroid phobia often ends up even non-corticosteroid adherence. As such, non-corticosteroid adherence, disease severity and itch are likely to be associated with each other, but their relationship has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate it in atopic dermatitis. Using data from 1190 participants in an Internet survey, we identified 255 non-cort

RATIONALE: Previous experiments in our laboratory have shown that D-penicillamine (DP) (acetaldehyde sequestering agent) is able to block the increase in ethanol consumption observed after a period of imposed deprivation (the so-called alcohol deprivation effect (ADE)), using a non-operant paradigm in Wistar rats.
OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed at investigating the robustness and reproducibility of our previous data using an operant paradigm, which is considered to be a valid and reliable model of human drug consumption, and the ADE, probably the most often used measure of ethanol relapse-dr

One major cause for discrepancies in results from animal experimental studies is the use of different animal strains and suppliers. We have previously reported that Wistar rats from five different suppliers display profound differences in ethanol intake and behavior. One of the neurobiological processes that could be underlying these differences is the endogenous opioid system, which has been implicated in the rewarding and reinforcing effects of alcohol. We therefore hypothesized that the differences between the supplier groups would also be evident in the endogenous opioid system. Radioimmun

OBJECTIVE: The current study explores three avenues in early young adulthood through which adolescent problems may be linked to later substance use problems: problematic substance use, failure to assume adult roles and responsibilities, and exposure to pro-drug social influences.
METHOD: Participants (N = 1,986; 49% female) filled out surveys at ages 18, 23 and 29. Participants were 67% white, 9% black, 10% Hispanic and 8% Asian. Deviance, poor mental health, substance use, alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems, and school dropout were measured at age 18. AOD problems were also measured at ag

The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between Antabus dosage and the disulfiram-alcohol reaction (DAR) after ethanol challenge. Fifty-two healthy volunteers, 29 men and 23 women, aged 20-61 years, were treated with increasing doses of Antabuse (1, 100, 200, 300 mg) for 14 days each. At the end of each 14 days the volunteers were challenged with 0.15 g ethanol/kg body weight. Blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate, and symptoms such as flushing, heat sensation, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, breathlessness, and headache were monitored for the next 50 min. The volunteers l

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety during hangovers, a common yet understudied phenomenon, may be influenced by psychological factors prior to or concurrent with the hangover event. Alcohol intake levels; general anxiety and depression; depression symptoms during acute physical illness; state- and trait-based emotion dysregulation; and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) were examined.
METHODS: Participants reporting current alcohol consumption (n = 217) completed baseline assessments of psychological traits. Two-week follow-up (n = 136) captured state-based factors and hangover outcomes. Participants report

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment (EA), which comprises cognitive (CogEA) and noncognitive (NonCogEA) components, is positively genetically correlated with alcohol and cannabis use but negatively correlated with alcohol and cannabis use disorders (AUD and CUD). These paradoxical associations suggest that shared genetic influences with EA may differ by level of substance involvement.
METHODS: To test this, we examined the shared genetic architecture of EA, CogEA, and NonCogEA with alcohol consumption (AC), AUD, lifetime cannabis use (CanUse), and CUD. We used bivariate causal mixture models,

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Personality traits have been consistently linked to alcohol use. High neuroticism and extraversion and low agreeableness and conscientiousness are known risk factors for both alcohol use frequency and problematic use across the lifespan. These associations have mostly been studied in the sufficient causality domain ("if X, then probably Y"), whereas little is known about these relationships in the necessary causality one ("if not X, then not Y"). Knowing that a variable is a necessary cause for an outcome helps identify who will be at risk for the outcome and who will be v

BACKGROUND: In France, the evidence-based policies recommended by the World Health Organization SAFER program remain poorly implemented, despite relatively high levels of alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harms. To understand this paradox, we used Kingdon's Multiple Streams Approach (MSA) as framework to analyze how members of the French parliament perceive alcohol and how alcohol industry and public health actors influence their decision-making.
METHODS: We conducted twenty-five interviews with French deputies and senators from different political parties and regions. We built the inte

BACKGROUND: Illicit alcohol consumption is a major public health problem in Zambia and many other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to determine drivers of illicit alcohol consumption among at-risk populations, such as youths, in selected urban areas in Zambia, using the social-ecological model as a lens to understand these drivers.
METHODS: Through a qualitative approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 key stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Zambia Revenue Authority, local council public health departments, and rehabilitation centers. We also interviewe

OBJECTIVES: To describe the validity of alcohol use disorder (AUD), the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for alcohol use and repeated or harm-associated use in pregnancy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of pregnancies in individuals who sought care at a medical center from May 2014 to August 2023. We selected all pregnancies with an ICD 9th (ICD-9) or 10th (ICD-10) revision AUD code (ICD-9: 303.9x and 305.x; ICD-10: F10.x and O99.31x) and calculated their positive predictive value (PPV) for capturing alcohol use and repeated or harm-associated use in pregnancy

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with stigma, mental health issues, and alcohol use significantly affecting treatment outcomes. Stigma delays TB diagnosis, reduces treatment adherence, and disrupts care continuity. Mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, further undermine adherence, whereas alcohol use accelerates TB disease progression and leads to poor treatment outcomes. Current TB care models in SSA lack integrated support for psychosocial and behavioral health needs. This article advocates for a comprehensive care mod

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women participated in multifaceted case management (MCM) to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
METHODS: Women recruited from antenatal clinics for a longitudinal child development study were screened for alcohol use. Forty-four pregnant women were defined as high-risk drinkers on the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) by an AUDIT score ≥8 and participated in 18 months of MCM to facilitate reduction or cessation of alcohol consumption. Forty-one women completed MCM. Fifty-five equally high-risk women who received standard antenatal care comprise

OBJECTIVE: The diagnoses included within the umbrella term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), are based on the documentation of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), growth deficits and a pattern of dysmorphic physical features and neurobehavioral impairments. Although 3 key facial features (short palpebral fissures, a smooth philtrum and a thin vermilion of the upper lip) are the only dysmorphic features taken into account for the diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or partial FAS (pFAS), several other features are commonly seen in individuals with these diagnoses. The goals of our stu

Desire thinking is an emerging construct in the addictive behaviours literature. No research, to date, has investigated its contribution to problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence in patient samples when accounting for established predictors of addictive behaviours. The present study sought to clarify, in patient samples, the relative contribution of desire thinking in the associations between negative affect, impulsivity and thought suppression on the one hand and craving, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence on the other. To achieve this goal, two groups of individuals wit
