BACKGROUND: Alopecia can be a manifestation of mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS), but the prevalence is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe the clinicopathologic presentation and molecular features of alopecia in patients with MF/SS.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of a prospectively collected MF/SS database was used to identify patients with alopecia. The National Alopecia Areata Registry was used to identify patients with self-reported cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
RESULTS: Among 1550 patients with MF/SS, 38 patients with patchy, total-scalp, or universal alopecia w…

Prostaglandin F2α analogs, commonly prescribed for glaucoma treatment, have been shown to induce side effects such as cutaneous hypertrichosis and hyperpigmentation. Therefore, these medications have theoretic applications in the treatment of alopecia and disorders of hypopigmentation. We reviewed the literature to find original studies assessing the use of prostaglandin F2α analogs in these settings. Studies and reports were analyzed in regards to androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, chemotherapy-induced alopecia, vitiligo, and hypopigmented scarring. Based on the results of these studies, a…

Several studies have examined the etiology of alopecia, or hair loss, in rhesus macaques. While outcomes differ across studies, some commonalities have emerged. Females, particularly pregnant females, show more alopecia than males, and alopecia follows a seasonal pattern. Much research has explored causes of hair loss; however, alopecia can result from lack of hair growth in addition to hair loss. To better understand how sex, reproductive state, and season affect alopecia, we followed 241 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in outdoor breeding groups over one year, recording both alopecia severi…

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is believed to be an autoimmune condition with a worldwide occurrence. It usually presents as patchy, nonscarring hair loss. There is a paucity of clinical data in Asians.
OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiology, clinical aspects, associations, and treatment of alopecia areata in an Asian population over a 1-year period.
METHODS: Records of all newly diagnosed alopecia areata cases seen from May 1998 to April 1999 at the National Skin Center were collated with regard to the epidemiology, pattern of alopecia, and associations according to the investigational guideline…

Hair loss is a common problem in men and women. Correct diagnosis of hair disorders is complex and requires evaluation of clinical presentation, history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Hair loss may be categorized as hair shaft abnormalities, permanent alopecia, or nonpermanent alopecia. Nonpermanent alopecia, the most common type, includes androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and traction alopecia. The hallmark of this group is the possibility of complete regrowth with adequate treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Long-term efficacy and safety data are imperative for therapies used to treat severe alopecia areata (AA) because the disease is chronic, loss of response can be devastating to patients, and the safety profile needs to support long-term therapy. Baricitinib, a selective JAK inhibitor, has been approved for severe AA in adults and is being studied in pediatric patients. This study evaluates the final long-term efficacy and safety of baricitinib in adults with severe AA.
METHODS: Efficacy was assessed for patients randomized to baricitinib 4 mg or 2 mg who achieved response (Sever…

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is characterized by androgen-dependent follicular miniaturization and progressive disturbance of follicular structure and cycling. Local steroid metabolism, including 5α-reductase-related androgen production and aromatase-related estrogen conversion, may contribute to this process.
METHODS: A dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced mouse model of AGA was used to evaluate the in vivo effects of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOP). Dose screening was followed by histological assessment, quantitative proteomics, biochemical assays, multiplex immunofluores…

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common hair loss disorder, influenced by distinct genetic factors and intricate environmental factors. The exosomes (Exos) from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) have diverse effects, including the promotion of cell proliferation, inhibition of apoptosis, analgesia, and enhancement of wound healing. MicroRNAs are essential components of the paracrine secretion of ADMSC-derived Exos. This study revealed that ADMSC-derived Exos could counteract the impairment of dermal papilla cells induced by dihydrotestosterone by inhibiting the TGF-β1 signaling …

Canine Alopecia X is a non-inflammatory hair loss disorder of unknown etiology that predominantly affects German Spitz dogs. Treatment modalities include hormone and/or melatonin supplementation and low trauma microneedling. Melatonin influences hair growth and pigmentation in several species and presents a low risk of adverse effects when used in dogs with Alopecia X. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is frequently used in human androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata; despite this, PBM remains unexplored in canine Alopecia X. To address this knowledge gap, sixty dogs of both sexes will be randomly …

Alopecia is a condition in which hair on the scalp or other areas of the body is lost or falls out excessively. Nutritional deficiency causes blood flow to the head to decrease causing the hormone testosterone to be changed by the enzyme 5-α-reductase to dihydrotestosterone, which inhibits the growth phase and accelerates the death phase. One of the methods developed to treat alopecia is through inhibition of the 5-α-reductase enzyme, which converts testosterone to its more potent metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Ethnomedicinally, Merremia peltata leaf is used by the people of Sulawesi a…

A few common causes of hair loss account for the vast majority of cases. A well-directed history and simple physical examination is often sufficient to make a diagnosis. Laboratory testing is often unnecessary. A scalp biopsy can be useful, but only if processed and interpreted correctly. Androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, senescent alopecia, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, trichotillomania, and cosmetic hair damage are common causes of non-scarring alopecia. Discoid lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris, and central, centrifugal scarring alopecia are the most common forms of sca…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hair loss, or alopecia, may occur as a primary skin disorder or because of an underlying health problem. It may be upsetting to patients, particularly adolescents who are experiencing physical, emotional, and psychological transitions. Understanding the impact of alopecia is important for care providers who see adolescents.
RECENT FINDINGS: The most common forms of alopecia in adolescence are telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, and alopecia areata. Telogen effluvium may present suddenly or insidiously secondary to a variety of triggers. Androgenetic alopecia may begin…

The field of hair disorders is constantly growing. The most important hair diseases are divided in non- cicatricial and cicatricial ones. Non-cicatricial alopecia are more frequent than cicatricial alopecia. The first step is to obtain a good history and physical examination. Laboratory testing is often unnecessary, while trichoscopy is fundamental for all hair diseases. Scalp biopsy is strongly suggested in cicatricial alopecia and in doubtful cases. Androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, trichotillomania are common causes of non- cicatricial alopecia. Frontal fibrosing al…
