A quantitative assessment of thyroid histopathology of herring gulls (Larus argentatus) from the Great Lakes and a hypothesis on the causal role of environmental contaminants.

Thyroids from 213 adult herring gulls of both sexes were collected during incubation from nine colonies in the Great Lakes basin of eastern North America between 1974 and 1983, and from a single colony in the Bay of Fundy from 1977 to 1982. Qualitative and quantitative histological assessment revealed that the majority of the gulls from the Great Lakes basin suffered from goiter. These thyroids had a greater mass than those from the Bay of Fundy, and were microfollicular and frequently hyperplastic. The histopathology was similar to that previously observed in Pacific salmon from the Great Lak

[Development in mosquitoes of 3 filaria of the South American lizards of the genus Oswaldofilaria].

The development of O. petersi, O. belemensis and O. spinosa is similar to that of O. bacillaris: the larvae are in the adipose tissue of various mosquitoes; the infective stages are characterized by the longitudinal salient ridges of the cuticule, the long tail ended by two lappets, the well-developed glandular oesophagus; the female genital anlage lies in the anterior half part of the body, but is not very far from the median line. This character opposes these species to the other viviparous Filariae and stresses the originality of the Oswaldofilariinar.

Coding-Complete Genome Sequence of a Yellow Fever Virus Isolated from a Baby Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya) from São Paulo State, Brazil, in 2016.

We report a coding-complete sequence of a yellow fever virus, strain JabSPM02, containing the 3' untranslated region and all coding regions. The virus was recovered from an infected howler monkey from a rural area in São Paulo State, Brazil. Our findings show that it belongs to the South America 1E genotype.

Multiple Introductions of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhi H58 with Reduced Fluoroquinolone Susceptibility into Chile.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi H58, an antimicrobial-resistant lineage, is globally disseminated but has not been reported in Latin America. Genomic analysis revealed 3 independent introductions of Salmonella Typhi H58 with reduced fluoroquinolone susceptibility into Chile. Our findings highlight the utility of enhanced genomic surveillance for typhoid fever in this region.

Case Report: Filaria or Megasperm? A Cause of an Ultrasonographic "Filarial Dance Sign".

Bancroftian filariasis can cause genital abnormalities related to chronic inflammation and obstruction of the afferent lymphatic vessels, and may demonstrate a "filarial dance sign" on scrotal ultrasound with mobile echogenic particles observed. We present a patient with a positive "filarial dance sign," travel within Latin America, and negative filarial serology.

Endemic Mycoses in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients.

The endemic mycoses are a group of thermally dimorphic fungal pathogens occupying a specific geographic range. In North America, the chief endemic mycoses are histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, and blastomycosis. Endemic fungi can cause serious infections in solid organ transplant recipients from primary infection, reactivation of latent disease, or donor-derived infection.

An Unusual Cluster of Neuroinvasive Lyme Disease Cases Presenting With Bannwarth Syndrome in the Midwest United States.

Bannwarth syndrome (BWS), an infrequent manifestation of neuroinvasive Lyme disease (LD) characterized by radiculopathy, neuropathy, and lymphocytic pleocytosis, is more commonly documented in Europe than North America. Here, we describe a cluster of 5 neuroinvasive LD cases with BWS in the upper Midwest United States between July and August 2017.

Is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection (pigeon fever) in horses an emerging disease in western Canada?

This report describes 5 horses in the southern Alberta region with typical and atypical external abscessation due to Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (pigeon fever). "Pigeon fever" has recently been diagnosed in new geographic regions in North America and should be kept as a differential diagnosis by practitioners when an external or internal abscess is identified in a horse.

Reemergence of St. Louis Encephalitis Virus, California, 2015.

St. Louis encephalitis virus infection was detected in summer 2015 in southern California after an 11-year absence, concomitant with an Arizona outbreak. Sequence comparisons showed close identity of California and Arizona isolates with 2005 Argentine isolates, suggesting introduction from South America and underscoring the value of continued arbovirus surveillance.

Transfusional chagas disease: parasitological and serological monitoring of an infected recipient and blood donor.

Chagas disease is endemic to Latin America, but human migration is extending its distribution. This report describes the parasitological and serological course of disease in a Spanish patient fatally infected via a blood product transfusion, as well as the monitoring of the donor. Before undergoing immunosuppression, multitransfused patients should be screened for anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Panama.

We describe a fatal pediatric case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Panama, the first, to our knowledge, since the 1950s. Diagnosis was established by immunohistochemistry, PCR, and isolation of Rickettsia rickettsii from postmortem tissues. Molecular typing demonstrated strong relatedness of the isolate to strains of R. rickettsii from Central and South America.

Clostridium botulinum type D intoxication in a dairy herd in Ontario.

Thirty-four Holstein cows died after exposure to Clostridium botulinum type D toxin, presumably from contaminated haylage. The presence of type D toxin in ruminal contents was confirmed by mouse inoculation. This is the first confirmation by direct toxin isolation of C. botulinum type D toxin in cattle in North America.
