The assessment of knowledge and awareness about iron deficiency anemia among the population of Riyadh province.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is considered the most common micronutrient deficiency and the greatest health concern throughout the globe. The main causes of anemia are iron deficiency, parasitic infestations, viral infections (human immunodeficiency virus), hemorrhage, and renal and hepatic diseases. Therefore, it is mandatory to be equipped with the proper knowledge regarding the causes, signs, symptoms, and diets containing iron, which can be a good initiative for the proper treatment and management of the health hazards; also, it will help primary care physicians to differentiat…

In blood we trust: anemia as a negative healing prognostic factor in diabetic foot patients.

AIM: Anemia has been associated with severity of diabetic foot (DF) disease. Our study aimed to evaluate whether the presence of anemia could decrease the healing chances in DF. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all patients admitted in our department in 2021 for DF, dividing them according to presence (Group A) or absence (Group B) of anemia. Groups were compared for clinical and demographic characteristics, procedures and outcomes: healing rate (HR) at 6 months, healing time (HT) and recurrence rate (RR) at 12 months. RESULTS: We sorted out data from 196 consecutive patients: 114 (58%) …

Detrimental effect of anemia after mechanical thrombectomy on functional outcome in patients with ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Anemia can occur due to an aspiration maneuver of blood with thrombi during mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for stroke. However, the association between postoperative anemia and stroke outcomes is unknown. METHODS: In a registry-based hospital cohort, consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent MT were retrospectively recruited. Patients were divided into the following three groups according to their hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations within 24 h after MT; no anemia (Hb concentrations ≥13 g/dL for men and ≥ 12 g/dL for women), mild anemia (Hb concentrations of 11-13 g/d…

Thalidomide as an Effective Treatment in Sideroblastic Anemia, Immunodeficiency, Periodic Fevers, and Developmental Delay (SIFD).

PURPOSE: Sideroblastic anemia, immunodeficiency, periodic fevers, and developmental delay (SIFD) is an autosomal recessive syndrome caused by biallelic loss-of-function variant of tRNA nucleotidyl transferase 1 (TRNT1). Efficacious methods to treat SIFD are lacking. We identified two novel mutations in TRNT1 and an efficacious and novel therapy for SIFD. METHODS: We retrospectively summarized the clinical records of two patients with SIFD from different families and reviewed all published cases of SIFD. RESULTS: Both patients had periodic fever, developmental delay, rash, microcytic anemia, …

Pathogenesis of Anemia in Canine Babesiosis: Possible Contribution of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines and Chemokines-A Review.

Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne protozoan disease caused by intraerythrocytic parasites of the genus Babesia. The infection may lead to anemia in infected dogs. However, anemia is not directly caused by the pathogen. The parasite's developmental stages only have a marginal role in contributing to a decreased red blood cell (RBC) count. The main cause of anemia in affected dogs is the immune response to the infection. This response includes antibody production, erythrophagocytosis, oxidative damage of RBCs, complement activation, and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. Moreover, both in…

Detection of iron deficiency anemia by medical images: a comparative study of machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is one of the global public health problems that affect children and pregnant women. Anemia occurs when the level of red blood cells within the body decreases or when the structure of the red blood cells is destroyed or when the Hb level in the red blood cell is below the normal threshold, which results from one or more increased red cell destructions, blood loss, defective cell production or a depleted sum of Red Blood Cells. METHODS: The method used in this study is divided into three phases: the datasets were gathered, which is the palm, pre-processed the image, which co…

An unusual cause of iron deficiency anemia in a patient with severe aortic stenosis and heart failure.

UNLABELLED: There has been an exponential increase in incidence of severe aortic stenosis partially due to the lengthening of average lifespan. Among the most disabling symptoms of aortic stenosis are chest pain, fatigue, and dyspnea up to heart failure and pulmonary edema. In some cases, to worsen this symptomatology, there are coagulation disorders linked to an alteration of functional von Willebrand factor, responsible for progressive anemia. In elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis, the simultaneous presence of an angiodysplasia of the colon can favor blood dripping, which may cause…

Successful Treatment of Acute Hepatitis-Associated Aplastic Anemia in a Young Boy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (AHAAA) is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by the development of aplastic anemia 2-3 months following an episode of acute hepatitis. Several immunosuppressive agents, but not mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and bone marrow transplantation are the standard treatment options for AHAAA. CASE REPORT: In this report, we present a case of a young boy with AHAAA manifesting as acute liver failure. The etiology was type 1 autoimmune hepatitis responsive to the second-line therapeutic combination of steroids and MMF. The liver has fully recove…

Toddler with giant omental cyst, profound anemia, and shock: case report and review of the literature.

Giant greater omental cysts with associated massive hemorrhage are rare. We encountered a 16-month-old boy with a four-day history of acute abdominal pain, distension, and paleness. Physical examination revealed a blood pressure of 74/27 mmHg. No well-defined masses were observed on abdominal palpation. The hemoglobin level on admission was 24 g/L. After initial resuscitation and blood transfusion, a computed tomography (CT) scan was performed, revealing a giant cystic mass with an intracystic hemorrhage. The diagnosis was confirmed via exploratory laparotomy, and the cyst, with the attached p

The prevalence of anemia in people with chronic kidney disease after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is performed for various hematological diseases. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurs relatively often after HSCT. Anemia after HSCT may be due to CKD and/or other reasons. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of anemia and its possible relationship to the presence of CKD in patients at least 3 months after HSCT. The study included 156 patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT treatment in our center in the years 1998 to 2021 due to different hematologic pathologies (acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, lymphoma, and …

History of Pica, Obesity, and Their Associations with Anemia in Pregnancy: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Anemia in pregnancy represents a major global health problem, and progress is insufficient to meet the World Health Assembly's global nutrition target of halving anemia prevalence by 2030. We assessed the prevalence and factors associated with anemia among pregnant women in northern Sudan. This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Almatamah, River Nile State, Sudan. Sociodemographic and obstetric data were collected using a questionnaire. Hemoglobin (Hb) was measured using an automated hematology analyzer. Multivariate and simple linear regression analyses were performed. A t…

Why Is Iron Deficiency/Anemia Linked to Alzheimer's Disease and Its Comorbidities, and How Is It Prevented?

Impaired iron metabolism has been increasingly observed in many diseases, but a deeper, mechanistic understanding of the cellular impact of … stration in the spleen and liver. Long-lasting iron depletion affects erythropoiesis and results in anemia of chronic disease, a common condition in patients with AD and its comorbidities. Instead of iron supplementation, drugs, diet, or phytochemicals that improve energy supply and cellular glucose uptake should be administered to counteract hypoferremi …

Brain BOLD and NIRS response to hyperoxic challenge in sickle cell disease and chronic anemias.

PURPOSE: Congenital anemias, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, are associated with cerebral tissue hypoxia and heightened stroke risks. Recent works in sickle cell disease mouse models have suggested that hyperoxia respiratory challenges can identify regions of the brain having chronic tissue hypoxia. Therefore, this work investigated differences in hyperoxic response and regional cerebral oxygenation between anemic and healthy subjects. METHODS: A cohort of 38 sickle cell disease subjects (age 22 ± 8 years, female 39%), 25 non-sickle anemic subjects (age 25 ± 11 years, female 52%…

A novel RAD51 variant resulting in Fanconi anemia identified in an infant with multiple congenital anomalies.

Fanconi anemia, FA, is a rare, multi-system disease caused by pathogenic variants in DNA repair genes. We report a novel RAD51 variant in an infant with FA whose tracheobronchomalacia has not been described in FA. His severe presentation expands the phenotype of RAD51-associated FA, reported only in three patients previously.

Splenomegaly and Splenic Pseudocyst in a Female Teenage Patient with Sickle Cell Anemia-A Case Report.

Splenomegaly is one of the complications of sickle cell disease (SCD) occurring in early childhood. This risk is reduced by the age of five years as the spleen undergoes auto splenectomy as a consequence of recurrent vasooclusion and splenic infarction. However, in some variants of SCD, the persistence of the spleen occurs. This can be complicated rarely by the formation of a splenic pseudocyst. We report a 17-year-old teenager with sickle cell anemia who presented with an 8-year history of gradually increasing left-sided abdominal swelling and a 2-month history of recurrent left upper abdomin…

Dysfunction of CD169+ macrophages and blockage of erythrocyte maturation as a mechanism of anemia in Plasmodium yoelii infection.

Plasmodium parasites cause malaria with disease outcomes ranging from mild illness to deadly complications such as severe malarial anemia (SMA), pulmonary edema, acute renal failure, and cerebral malaria. In young children, SMA often requires blood transfusion and is a major cause of hospitalization. Malaria parasite infection leads to the destruction of infected and noninfected erythrocytes as well as dyserythropoiesis; however, the mechanism of dyserythropoiesis accompanied by splenomegaly is not completely understood. Using Plasmodium yoelii yoelii 17XNL as a model, we show that both a defe…

Genotype-phenotype and outcome associations in patients with Fanconi anemia: the National Cancer Institute cohort.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is caused by pathogenic variants in the FA/BRCA DNA repair pathway genes, and is characterized by congenital abnormalities, bone marrow failure (BMF) and increased cancer risk. We conducted a genotype-phenotype and outcomes study of 203 patients with FA in our cohort. We compared across the genes, FA/BRCA DNA repair pathways (upstream, ID complex and downstream), and type of pathogenic variants (hypomorphic or null). We explored differences between the patients evaluated in our clinic (clinic cohort) and those who provided data remotely (field cohort). Patients with variant…
