A 38-year-old woman with sustained right chest pain was referred to our hospital. She showed pleural effusion and peripheral blood eosinophilia. Thoracentesis revealed eosinophilic pleural effusion in which the smear, culture and cytological examinations were all negative. Fascioliasis is a zoonotic infestation caused by the trematode fasciola hepatica. It presents a wide spectrum of clinical pictures ranging from fever and eosinophilia to ambiguous gastrointestinal symptoms in the acute phase. However, it may often be overlooked, especially in the acute phase, because of uncertain symptoms. Fasciola hepatica can have an initial presentation similar to the presentation of malignancy. Here, we report a case of a hepatic mass caused by fasciola hepatica.

We describe a Schistosoma haematobium infection with asymptomatic eosinophilia, persistently negative urine microscopy, and late seroconversion (7.5 months) in a traveler returning from Mali. After initial negative parasitological tests, travel history led to diagnostic cystoscopy, allowing final diagnosis with urine microscopy after the bladder biopsy. The patient was successfully treated with praziquantel. Difficulties in making the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in asymptomatic returning travelers are discussed; we propose a trial treatment in these cases.

A woman with a history of cured breast cancer and multiple trips to India presented with a cervical nodule. Primarily suspected as metastasis of breast cancer, histopathology, however, showed the scolex of Taenia solium. Although the patient was neurologically asymptomatic neuroimaging showed multiple cysts. During treatment with praziquantel, albendazole, and dexamethason the patient developed seizures.
