Dietary Matcha Attenuates High-Fat High-Sugar Diet-Induced Cardiomyocyte Hypertrophy in Association with Gut Microbiota Remodeling in Mice.

Objectives: Obesity is associated with cardiac remodeling characterized by cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and fibrosis, eventually leading to heart failure. This study aimed to evaluate whether dietary matcha supplementation could be effective in reducing high-fat, high-sugar diet (HFD)-induced cardiac remodeling in mice, and whether this effect is linked to changes in the gut microbiota along the gut-heart axis. Methods: Six-week-old C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into normal chow diet (NCD) or HFD (without matcha, 0.2% matcha, or 1% matcha) groups. Dietary intervention continued for 10 weeks

Impact of chronic ethanol consumption and SARS-COV-2 on the liver and intestine: A pilot dose-response study in mice.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there was a marked increase in alcohol consumption. COVID-19 superimposed on underlying liver disease notably worsens the outcome of many forms of liver injury. The goal of a current pilot study was to test the dual exposure of alcohol and COVID-19 infection in an experimental animal model of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). METHODS: After 4 weeks of ethanol (EtOH) feeding, C57BL/6 male mice received SARS-CoV-2 (SARS2-N501YMA30) intranasally at 3 × 102, 1 × 103, 3 × 103, and 1 × 104 plaque-forming units (PFU). Mice we

Hypothalamic gliosis as a potential mediator of improved glucose tolerance induced by time-restricted feeding in obese mice.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) has been shown to improve glycemic control, reduce liver fat, and decrease cardiovascular risk in humans and diet-induced obese (DIO) mice. However, the mechanisms associated with this improvement are not completely understood. High-fat diet (HFD)-associated hypothalamic inflammation and glial activation promote obesity and metabolic dysfunction, raising the possibility that TRF mitigates these factors. Specifically, TRF increases circulating levels of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a ketone body that crosses the blood-brain barrier and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Embryo thermal manipulation modifies development and hepatic lipid metabolism in post-hatch layer-type chicks.

Incubation temperature is a crucial environmental factor affecting embryonic development and chick quality. Metabolism during the embryonic stage, particularly liver lipid metabolism, is essential for the growth and development of poultry. This study aimed to investigate the effects of embryo thermal manipulation with high (TMH, 39.5 °C, 65% RH, 8 h/d) and low (TML, 20 °C, 65% RH, 1 h/d) temperatures during 8th to 15th embryonic age on hatching performance and liver lipid metabolism in layer chicks. Additionally, the duration of TM effects was evaluated through a short-term feeding trial. The

Effects of Early Life Stress on Synaptic Plasticity in the Developing Hippocampus of Male and Female Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Early life stress (ELS) increases the risk for developing psychopathology in adulthood. When these effects occur is largely unknown. We here studied at which time during development ELS affects hippocampal synaptic plasticity, from early life to adulthood, in a rodent ELS model. Moreover, we investigated whether the sensitivity of synaptic plasticity to the stress-hormone corticosterone is altered by exposure to ELS. MATERIALS & METHODS: Male and female Wistar rats were exposed to maternal deprivation (MD) for 24h on postnatal day (P)3 or left undisturbed with their mother (cont

Effect of mineralocorticoid receptor blockade on the renal renin-angiotensin system in Dahl salt-sensitive hypertensive rats.

BACKGROUND: The (pro)renin receptor exists in the kidney, blood vessels and the heart. (Pro)renin binds to the receptor and induces tissue injuries directly, completely independent of angiotensin II (Ang II). The renal renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is activated in salt-sensitive hypertensive rats with in-vitro studies showing aldosterone increases angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity, renin production and angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) activity. However, the effect of blockade of mineralocorticoid receptor on the renal (pro)renin receptor, angiotensinogen, ACE and AT1R in

A 13-week subchronic toxicity study of ferric citrate in F344 rats.

Ferric citrate has been used as a food additive for supplementation of iron. We performed a 13-week subchronic toxicity study of ferric citrate in F344 rats with oral administration in the diet at concentrations of 0%, 0.25%, 1.0%, and 4.0%. Reduction of body weight gain was noted in 4.0% males and females. On hematology assessment, decreases of red blood cells and lymphocytes and increases of platelets and eosinophils were noted in 4.0% males and females. Serum biochemistry demonstrated increased iron and decreased total protein and transferrin in both sexes treated with 4.0% ferric citrate.

Involvement of epidermal growth factor in inducing obesity in ovariectomized mice.

Ovariectomy (Ovx) of mice significantly increases the epidermal growth factor (EGF) concentration in the submandibular gland. To elucidate the role of this elevated EGF in obesity of Ovx mice, we examined the effects of sialoadenectomy (Sx) and anti-EGF rabbit antiserum administration on the body weight (BW) gain and carcass fat deposition in Ovx animals. Studies were performed in four groups of mice consisting of control, Ovx, Ovx+Sx, and Ovx+anti-EGF groups. Ovx increased the BW gain compared with the control animals, whereas Sx and anti-EGF significantly reduced it. Although the relative we

Microchip vagal pacing reduces food intake and body mass.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Morbid obesity is an increasing problem worldwide. In many patients pharmacotherapy is ineffective and these cases are treated by surgery. Different types of gastroplasty and gastric bypasses have been described. However, all of these ablative surgical methods are irreversible and often replace obesity by other disorders. Neuromodulation of vagal activity is a method of inducing significant changes in stomach motility. We developed a pre-programmed microchip able to pace vagal afferent activity by changing current parameters. The aim of our study was to evaluate long-term effe

Regional sympathetic nervous activity and oxygen consumption in obese normotensive human subjects.

BACKGROUND: Disturbed sympathetic nervous function may be of importance in obesity; sympathetic underactivity could contribute to deficient thermogenesis, positive energy balance, and weight gain, while in contrast, sympathetic nervous overactivity would predispose to the development of obesity-related hypertension. Global indices of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function such as plasma or urinary norepinephrine (NE) have been unable to define SNS status in obesity. Since regional SNS activity can be altered in the absence of global changes, we investigated SNS activity in the heart, kidney
