[Changes in computed tomogram in cerebral parenchymal cysticercosis treated with albendazole].

AIM: To observe the changes in cerebral computed tomogram (CT) in cerebral parenchymal cysticercosis after albendazole treatment. METHODS: Cerebral CT scanning was conducted in 57 patients with cerebral cysticercosis in our hospital before, during and after albendazole treatment. RESULTS: Cerebral CT might be normal before onchospheres became cysticercariae in the brain. Small cystic lesions could turn into other CT signs of cerebral cysticercosis after albendazole treatment. CONCLUSION: Normal cerebral CT cannot rule out the disease. Small cystic lesions are the earliest pathological and a

Is the CRIB score (clinical risk index for babies) a valid tool in predicting neurodevelopmental outcome inExtremely low birth weight infants?

The study aimed to assess how well the severity of clinical conditions in extremely low birth weight infants in the first 12 h of life, as measured by the CRIB (clinical risk index for babies), relates to hospital outcome and subsequent disability at 18 months of age. The CRIB was confirmed as a valid index of initial neonatal risk, even in extremely low birth weight infants, predicting hospital outcome (death or major brain lesions) more accurately than birth weight or gestational age. However, an adjustment of the CRIB score for gestational age might enhance its positive predictive value in

Neonatal intracardiac rhabdomyomatosis: a case report.

Intracardiac tumors are rare in neonates. Most of these lesions are rhabdomyomas and they occur almost exclusively during infancy. Rhabdomyomas are commonly associated with tuberous sclerosis and often involve the brain, kidneys and pancreas; they are frequently multiple and originate most commonly from the ventricular septum. Surgical intervention is indicated for rhabdomyoma with either mechanical cardiac obstruction or dysrhythmias resulting in symptoms or sudden death. A newborn with diffuse rhabdomyomatosis over the right atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle of the heart complicated

Familial Lafora body disease of late onset: report of four cases in one family and a review of the literature.

Lafora body disease is one cause of progressive myoclonus epilepsy. It typically presents in the second decade with generalized seizures, myoclonus and then intellectual decline. Death is usual within 10 years. Diagnosis may be made by biopsy of skin, muscle, liver or brain. We present four siblings who were normal until their mid-twenties, but then developed intellectual decline, followed by myoclonus. Although a rare form of Lafora body disease has been described that follows a more benign course, may be of later onset, and whose pathology is subtly different, this family is so far unique in

Oxidized low density lipoprotein caused CNS neuron cell death.

Death induced by oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL) to embryonic CNS neuronal and neuroblastoma cells was investigated. Cell damage and viability were evaluated by LDH leakage and the MTT method, respectively. Dose- and time-dependent degeneration of neurons occurred after oxLDL (1-100 microg/ml) treatment but was absent after native low density lipoproteins (LDL). This degeneration was mediated, in part, by apoptosis because increased TUNEL and Hoechst dye-positive staining was observed. These effects occurred in the absence of microglia. However, DNA degradation was not detected. The

Phenotypic variability in van der Woude syndrome.

The association of lower lip pits with cleft lip and/or palate defines the van der Woude syndrome (VWS). VWS has an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance wiht a high penetrance and a variable expression. A gene involved in the origin of VWS is linked to loci on chromosome 1q32-q41. The gene might be involved in the programmed cell death of neural crest derived cells. Other malformations have been associated with the syndrome (dental defects, syngnathia, limb abnormalities, popliteal webs...). We report 4 cases with VWS demonstrating the wide clinical variability. One case shows brain abnormal

Aspergillus endocarditis and myocarditis in a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). A review of the literature.

We report the post-mortem findings of the case of a 31-year-old male who, through sexual contacts with a female drug addict, was found to be HIV-positive and developed the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) 2 years later. He was treated for various opportunistic infections over the next 7 years when he presented with cardiac abnormalities and multiple cerebral lesions which were responsible for his death. The results revealed Aspergillus fumigatus endocarditis and myocarditis with mycotic thromboembolic extension to the brain, spleen, kidney and pancreas. We review the literature of Asp

Cerebral distribution of immunoconjugate after treatment for neoplastic meningitis using an intrathecal radiolabeled monoclonal antibody.

A detailed autopsy and autoradiographic study was performed after the death of a patient undergoing intrathecal, antibody-guided irradiation for carcinomatous meningitis. The results demonstrated tumor cells infiltrating the surface meninges and a severe astrocytic reaction associated with oedema in the periventricular and brain stem subpial white matter. This was not seen in cortical or other gray matter structures. Autoradiographic examination correlated well, demonstrating isotope within the oedematous areas of the white matter in addition to the expected concentration in the leptomeningeal

[Effect of immunosuppression on the development and outcome of an acute infection in mice caused by administration of the Lassa virus].

In experimental infection of mice with Lassa virus, the infectious virus could be detected in all the organs and brain tissues tested. Histopathological lesions were demonstrated in cerebral and spinal cord tissues only. Roentgen irradiation in a dose of 500 R and cyclophosphamide protected mice against a lethal Lassa virus dose. Cyclosporin A in various doses exerted no effect on the outcome of the acute infection. The adoptive transfer of splenocytes from mouse donors inoculated intraperitoneally prevented the development of lethal disease symptoms and death of mice-recipients. It is suggest

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in an adolescent.

A 16-year-old boy was stricken with a progressive neurologic disorder characterized primarily by dementia progressing to severe neurologic debility in 12 months and death 28 months following the first symptoms. Pathologic examination showed a spongiform encephalopathy, consistent witha clinical diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The noteworthy features of the case are the age of onset, the somewhat prolonged course an the amount of white matter change. These are discussed within the frame of reference of CJD and the spongiform encephalopathies of infancy and childhood. Animal inocul

Optic neuroretinitis in association with BCNU and procarbazine therapy.

A 53-year-old man with multiple myeloma and plasma cell luekemia developed severe, acute bilateral optic neuroretinitis 8 days after chemotherapy with BCNU, procarbazine, cyclophosphamide, and prednisolone. He showed some return of function over the following 6 weeks before his death. Both BCNU and procarbazine are known to cross the blood--brain barrier. Procarbazine is known to interfere with neurological function. BCNU has been reported to transiently interfere with vision and, although this patient had highly morbid disease, the onset of optic neuroretinitis 8 days after combination therap

Trauma-related mortality in a European region with an intermediately mature trauma system: a comprehensive population-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the epidemiology of trauma-related mortality is essential to guide quality improvement and optimize trauma system performance. However, the absence of comprehensive regional registries often limits accurate assessment. This study aimed to characterize trauma-related deaths in Biscay (Spain), a European region with an intermediately mature trauma care system, including both prehospital and in-hospital deaths. METHODS: A retrospective, population-based observational study included all trauma-related deaths in 2019 and 2022. Data were obtained from forensic autopsy repo

Trauma mortality in mature trauma systems: are we doing better? An analysis of trauma mortality patterns, 1997-2008.

BACKGROUND: Advances in care such as damage control surgery, hemostatic resuscitation, protocol-driven cerebral perfusion management, and lung-protective ventilation have promised to improve survival after major trauma. We examined injury severity, mortality, and preventability in a mature trauma system during a 12-year period to assess the overall benefits of these and other improvements. METHODS: Using the institutional trauma registry and the quality management database, we analyzed the outcome and the cause of death for all primary trauma admissions from July 1, 1996, to June 30, 2008, an

Mechanistic Approach to Ferroptosis in Cancer and Neurological Diseases.

Ferroptosis is a form of oxidative, iron-dependent, non-apoptotic cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid peroxides and the depletion of glutathione. Ferroptosis plays a significant role in human cancer and is essential in neurological disorders, including neurodegeneration, stroke, and neurotrauma. One of the key challenges in cancer research is how to effectively kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact. Cancer cells often have defects in cell death executioner mechanisms, which is one of the main reasons for therapy resistance. To enable growth, cancer cells exhibi

Serum Hepcidin Levels are Associated with Poor Outcomes of Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Two-Center Observational Analytical Study.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) is related to disturbances in iron metabolism, and hepcidin is involved in the regulation of this process. However, it is unclear about serum hepcidin levels after sTBI. In this study, serum hepcidin levels were detected for association with severity and worse outcomes of sTBI. METHODS: In this two-center observational analytical study, age, gender, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellites and hyperlipidemia were not significantly different between 154 patients with sTBI and 154 controls; and serum hepcidin levels we

Zinc-Mediated Lysosomal Destabilization Links Mitochondrial Damage to Neuronal Death in a Cellular MPP+ Model of Parkinson's Disease.

Dysregulation of autophagy and lysosomal function is central to Parkinson's disease (PD), yet the upstream mechanisms leading to lysosomal failure remain unclear. Across primary mouse cortical neurons, MT-3 deficient primary mouse astrocytes, human iPSC-derived midbrain dopaminergic neurons, and Rho0 CHO cells lacking mitochondrial respiration, we investigated how mitochondrial stress perturbs zinc (Zn2+) homeostasis and lysosomal integrity. We identify intracellular zinc as a critical mediator linking mitochondrial dysfunction to lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) and neuronal death. I

Mechanistic insights of neuronal death and neuroprotective therapeutic approaches in stroke.

Stroke, particularly ischemic stroke, is the leading cause of long-term disability and mortality worldwide. It occurs due to the occlusion of the cerebral arteries, which significantly reduces the delivery of blood, oxygen, and essential nutrients to brain tissues. This deprivation triggers a cascade of cellular events that ultimately leads to neuronal death. Recent studies have clarified the multifactorial pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, highlighting the roles of energy failure, excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and apoptosis. This review aimed to provide a comprehensive i

Association between cerebrospinal fluid levels of neuro-specific enolase after hypothermia alone and in combination with neurodevelopmental outcomes at age six years.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is still associated with death and sequelae including cerebral palsy and intellectual disability despite induced hypothermia. Biomarkers, as early predictive indicators of adverse outcomes, are lacking. AIMS: To investigate whether post-rewarming cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-neuro-specific enolase (NSE) levels after hypothermia are associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes at age six years, alone or when combined with amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as neuroimaging and neurophysiolo

Transcriptomic Alteration in FUS-ALS Points Towards Apoptosis-Rather than Ferroptosis-Related Cell Death Pathway.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal type of neurodegenerative disease marked by progressive and selective degeneration of motor neurons (MNs) present in the spinal cord, brain stem and motor cortex. However, the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying primary cell death pathways, including ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) mediating MN dysfunction in ALS, remain elusive. Ferroptosis, a novel type of iron-dependent cell death with the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products, stands distinct from apoptotic-related stress and other cell death mechanisms. Although growing advances
