Mammalian inspiratory rhythm is generated from a neuronal network in a region of the medulla called the preBötzinger complex (pBC), which produces a signal driving the rhythmic contraction of inspiratory muscles. Rhythmic neural activity generated in the pBC and carried to other neuronal pools to drive the musculature of breathing may be studied using various approaches, including en bloc nerve recordings and transverse slice recordings. However, previously published methods have not extensively described the brainstem-spinal cord dissection process in a transparent and reproducible manner for

This paper reviews the presence, localization and characteristics of state-specific neurons in the mouse forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain that are involved in the control of ultradian sleep-wake cycles and shows that all these regions contain basic neural elements capable of generating the sleep-wake cycle. The chronic single-unit recording method in unanaesthetized animals is useful for unravelling the dynamics of sleep-wake switching, in particular because it can analyse events at the level of single neurons, thereby decoding information used by the brain in determining its functional state

Spatial hearing, and more specifically the ability to localize sounds in space, is one of the most studied and best understood aspects of hearing. Because there is no coding of acoustic space at the receptor organ, physiological sensitivity to spatial aspects of sounds first emerges in the central nervous system. Much progress has been made in the identification and characterization of the circuits in the auditory brainstem that create sensitivity to binaural and monaural cues toward acoustic space. We review the progress over the past third of a century, with a focus on the mammalian brainste

Adolphe Gubler (1821-1879) is a typical example of a 19th century hospital physician in Paris. Head of a medical unit at Beaujon hospital in 1855, he was nominated to the treatment and pharmacognosia Chair in 1868. He trained many students who became his disciples and remained very close to him. Gubler published prolifically in all areas of medicine. His most well-known work is clearly his contribution to the study of vascular accidents affecting the brain stem, which Auguste Millard worked on simultaneously; hence the eponymous Millard-Gubler syndrome, an example of crossed hemiplegia. Background and Purpose- The goal of this study was to systematically review the outcomes and complications after surgical resection of brain stem cavernous malformations (BCMs). Methods- A systematic literature review was performed using the PubMed database for studies published between 1986 and 2018. All studies comprising ≥2 patients with surgically resected BCMs and available follow-up data were included. Data extracted from studies included patient demographics, BCM location, and surgical outcomes. Results- Eighty-six studies comprising 2493 patients (adult and pediatric) were included for…

We present the case of a 66 year old gentleman with trigeminal schwannoma whose only presenting feature was a single gelastic seizure. This is the first case report of pathological laughter in trigeminal schwannoma in the absence of other trigeminal, brainstem, cerebellar or other cranial nerve dysfunction.

The physiological hearing range of turtles is approximately 50-1000 Hz, as determined by cochlear microphonics ( Wever and Vernon, 1956a). These low frequencies can constrain sound localization, particularly in red-eared slider turtles, which are freshwater turtles with small heads and isolated middle ears. To determine if these turtles were sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs), we investigated the connections and physiology of their auditory brainstem nuclei. Tract tracing experiments showed that cranial nerve VIII bifurcated to terminate in the first-order nucleus magnocellularis

What effects might arise from early life exposures to high iron? This review considers the specific effects of high iron on the brain, stem cells, and the process of erythropoiesis and identifies gaps in our knowledge of what molecular damage may be incurred by oxidative stress that is imparted by high iron status in early life. Specific areas to enhance research on this topic include the following: longitudinal behavioral studies of children to test associations between iron exposures and mood, emotion, cognition, and memory; animal studies to determine epigenetic changes that reprogram brain

Life underground has shaped the auditory sense of subterranean mammals, shifting their hearing range to low frequencies. Mole-rats of the genus Fukomys have, however, been suggested to hear at frequencies up to 18.5 kHz, unusually high for a subterranean rodent. We present audiograms of three mole-rat species, Fukomys anselli, Fukomys micklemi and the giant mole-rat Fukomys mechowii, based on evoked auditory brainstem potentials. All species showed low sensitivity and restricted hearing ranges at 60 dB SPL extending from 125 Hz to 4 kHz (5 octaves) with most-sensitive hearing between 0.8 kHz a

OBJECTIVE Sporadic cases of endonasal intraaxial brainstem surgery have been reported in the recent literature. The authors endeavored to assess the feasibility and limitations of endonasal endoscopic surgery for approaching lesions in the ventral portion of the brainstem. METHODS Five human cadaveric heads were used to assess the anatomy and to record various measurements. Extended transsphenoidal and transclival approaches were performed. After exposing the brainstem, white matter dissection was attempted through this endoscopic window, and additional key measurements were taken. RESULTS The
