A Fire and Altadena: Biographical Diffraction and Climate Disaster Loss.

This paper develops a conceptualization of biographical diffraction via a creative autoethnography of climate disaster grief. In January 2025, the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena, California killing 19 people and destroying over 9,000 structures. Among them was my family home. Having lived abroad in Aotearoa New Zealand for 5 years, I return to Altadena after the fire, navigating loss from sites of distance and proximity. Drawing upon Barad's concept of diffraction and the void, I grapple with the asymmetries of grief, privilege, belonging, and self that emerge with the loss of "home." To do so

Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Down Syndrome Cores: Experience from two sites.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As individuals with DS live longer, the prevalence of AD-related dementia increases, underscoring a growing public health concern. Historically, research efforts have largely overlooked the early manifestations and neuropathological trajectory of AD in DS, limiting our understanding of how closely it mirrors or diverges from sporadic AD in the general population. The Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) network, supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), plays a critical role in addressing this gap.

Platelet phosphatidylserine exposure and microparticle production as health bioindicators in marine mammals.

In human medicine, various pathologies, including decompression sickness, thrombocytopenia, and rheumatoid arthritis, have been linked to changes in cellular microparticles (MP) formation, particularly platelet microparticles (PMP). Similar disorders in marine mammals might be attributed to anthropogenic threats or illnesses, potentially impacting blood PMP levels. Thus, detecting platelet phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure and PMP formation could serve as a crucial diagnostic and monitoring approach for these conditions in marine mammals. Our group has developed a methodology to assess real-tim

Electrified Solar Zero Liquid Discharge: Exploring the Potential of PV-ZLD in the US.

Current brine management strategies are based on the disposal of brine in nearby aquifers, representing a loss in potential water and mineral resources. Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) is a possible strategy to reduce brine rejection while increasing the resource recovery from desalination plants. However, ZLD substantially increases the energy consumption and carbon footprint of a desalination plant. The predominant strategy to reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of ZLD is through the use of a hybrid desalination technology that integrates renewable energy. Here, we built a computa

Developing a Diabetes Discharge Order Set for Patients With Diabetes on Insulin.

BACKGROUND: Insulin, a high-risk medication, is prone to prescribing errors. Patients with diabetes experience higher hospitalization rates and extended hospital stays. Prescription errors, such as missing orders, inappropriate insulin type, missing instructions, and lack of appropriate intensification of insulin regimens are common issues. This project explored the use of system-based interventions and educational tools to minimize errors and improve the quality of insulin discharge regimens. METHODS: A needs assessment and baseline chart review were conducted before adapting a diabetes orde

Rationale and development of a prehospital goal-directed bundle of care to prevent rearrest after return of spontaneous circulation.

In patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) who attain return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), rearrest while in the prehospital setting represents a significant barrier to survival. To date, there are limited data to guide prehospital emergency medical services (EMS) management immediately following successful resuscitation resulting in ROSC and prior to handoff in the emergency department. Post-ROSC care encompasses a multifaceted approach including hemodynamic optimization, airway management, oxygenation, and ventilation. We sought to develop an evidenced-based, goal-directed b

Detection of Babesia conradae in Coyotes (Canis latrans) and Coyote-Hunting Greyhound Dogs (Canis familiaris).

Babesia conradae is a small piroplasm previously detected in coyote-hunting Greyhound dogs in California and Oklahoma. In dogs, B. conradae causes clinical signs similar to other tick-borne illnesses, and if not treated it can lead to acute kidney injury and other life-threating complications. To date, the life cycle of this apicomplexan parasite has not been fully described, but suggestions of direct contact or tick transmission have been proposed. The purpose of this study was to test coyote tissue samples from coyotes hunted by Greyhound dogs with a history of B. conradae infection to deter

Cannabinoid receptor 1-labeled boutons in the sclerotic dentate gyrus of epileptic sea lions.

Pathology in the dentate gyrus, including sclerosis, is a hallmark of temporal lobe epilepsy, and reduced inhibition to dentate granule cells may contribute to epileptogenesis. The perisomatic-targeting axonal boutons of parvalbumin-expressing interneurons decrease in proportion with granule cells in temporal lobe epilepsy. In contrast, dendrite-targeting axonal boutons of somatostatin-expressing interneurons sprout exuberantly in temporal lobe epilepsy. A third major class of GABAergic interneurons expresses cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) on their terminal boutons, but there is conflicting

Frontal and temporal lobe correlates of verbal learning and memory in aMCI and suspected Alzheimer's disease dementia.

Alzheimer's disease is primarily known for deficits in learning and retaining new information. This has long been associated with pathological changes in the mesial temporal lobes. The role of the frontal lobes in memory in Alzheimer's disease is less well understood. In this study, we examined the role of the frontal lobes in learning, recognition, and retention of new verbal information, as well as the presence of specific errors (i.e., intrusions and false-positive errors). Participants included one hundred sixty-seven patients clinically diagnosed with amnestic mild cognitive impairment or

It Is Not Called Recess Anymore: Breaktime in Middle School.

BACKGROUND: School recess offers students a break from the rigors and immobility of academic learning, and a chance for social interaction, play, and physical activity. The recess literature is based on elementary schools, with little attention to older students. Early adolescents also need school breaks, and this study offers some of the first findings on how to organize this time to best support the developmental needs of middle schoolers. METHODS: The study explores middle school breatktime in 3 schools in California. It uses observations, interviews, and a student survey conducted in 2018

The Unequal Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Infant Health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a large toll on population health and well-being. We examine the consequences of prenatal exposure for infant health, through which the pandemic may have lasting intergenerational effects. We examine multiple pathways by which the pandemic shaped birth outcomes and socioeconomic disparities in these consequences. Analysis of more than 3.5 million birth records in California with universal information on COVID infection among persons giving birth at the time of delivery reveals deep inequalities in infection by education, race/ethnicity, and place-based socioecon
