Impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection and viral burden on outcomes in acute decompensated heart failure.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) represent a clinically vulnerable population. However, the impact of concomitant severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and the prognostic relevance of viral burden in this setting remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 2,002 adults hospitalized with ADHF at a tertiary academic center between March 2020 and December 2024. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction

Joint decisions for hospital admissions and horizontal medical resource transfer against capacity shortage in the early stage of pandemics.

Pandemics pose significant challenges, particularly in the early stages when vertical resupply chains are overwhelmed. To mitigate the impact of medical resource shortages, we develop a multi-period optimization model incorporating lateral transshipment and hospital admission to minimize the total number of infected individuals by strategically allocating regional resources in the face of complex dynamics, including endogenous hospital admission rates and pandemic spread. To capture the temporal-spatial nature of pandemics, we extend the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Hospitalized-Recovered (SEI

Varicella Zoster Virus Downregulates Expression of the Nonclassical Antigen Presentation Molecule CD1d.

BACKGROUND: The nonclassical antigen presentation molecule CD1d presents lipid antigens to invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells. Activation of these cells triggers a rapid cytokine response providing an interface between innate and adaptive immune responses. The importance of CD1d and iNKT cells in varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection has been emphasized by clinical reports of individuals with CD1d or iNKT cell deficiencies experiencing severe, disseminated varicella postvaccination. METHODS: Three strains of VZV (VZV-S, rOka, and VZV rOka-66S) were used to infect Jurkat cells. Flow cyto

Hyphae, pseudohyphae, yeasts, spherules, spores, and more: A review on the morphology and pathology of fungal and oomycete infections in the skin of domestic animals.

Fungi are among the most common infectious agents affecting the skin of animals. The skin can serve as a port of entry for fungal infections, which can eventually become disseminated. In some regions of the world, oomycetes, such as Pythium and Lagenidium, are also responsible for a significant number of severe cutaneous infections. Histologic evaluation of fungal morphology, including size, shape, septation, branching, and budding characteristics, combined with the distribution of inflammatory infiltrates within different skin layers can potentially identify etiologic agents, guiding selectio

Using next generation matrices to estimate the proportion of infections that are not detected in an outbreak.

Contact tracing, where exposed individuals are followed up to break ongoing transmission chains, is a key pillar of outbreak response for infectious disease outbreaks. Unfortunately, these systems are not fully effective, and infections can still go undetected as people may not remember all their contacts or contacts may not be traced successfully. A large proportion of undetected infections suggests poor contact tracing and surveillance systems, which could be a potential area of improvement for a disease response. In this paper, we present a method for estimating the proportion of infections

Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis: Proteomic changes in the snail host.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the main cause of human eosinophilic meningitis. Humans are accidental hosts, becoming infected due to ingestion of raw intermediate (snails and slugs) or paratenic hosts. Once ingested, the larvae migrate towards the brain where they die, causing the disease. To develop better mollusk control strategies, it is important to first understand what happens in the snail during infection, therefore our purpose was to characterize proteomic, metabolic and immunologic changes in Biomphalaria glabrata 24 h after infection with A. cantonensis. For this purpose, proteins w

Contribution of Asymptomatic Plasmodium Infections to the Transmission of Malaria in Kayin State, Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: The objective of mass antimalarial drug administration (MDA) is to eliminate malaria rapidly by eliminating the asymptomatic malaria parasite reservoirs and interrupting transmission. In the Greater Mekong Subregion, where artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum is now widespread, MDA has been proposed as an elimination accelerator, but the contribution of asymptomatic infections to malaria transmission has been questioned. The impact of MDA on entomological indices has not been characterized previously. METHODS: MDA was conducted in 4 villages in Kayin State (Myanmar). Malari

[Prevalence among males from the general population of agents responsible of not ulcerative genital tract infections, assisted in specialized care].

OBJECTIVE: Male genital infections are a major problem due to their high frequency and morbidity and their role in cases of male infertility. We studied the presence, in males assisted in specialized care, of non-ulcerative genital tract infections-producing agents. METHODS: We studied descriptively and retrospective microbiological results of 3,066 samples of male patients, with diagnosis of genital tract infection episode, received between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2017. Detection of microorganisms in the sample was performed using techniques of artificial culture and PCR (BD-MAX).

Plasmodium Species Infecting Children Presenting with Malaria in Uganda.

Contributions of species other than Plasmodium falciparum to human malaria in sub-Saharan Africa are uncertain. We collected blood from children aged 6 months to 10 years diagnosed with malaria by Giemsa-stained blood smears (176 subjects) or histidine rich protein-2-based rapid diagnostic tests (323 subjects) in 2016; 50 samples from each of 10 sites across Uganda were studied to identify infecting species. Of 499 available samples, 474 demonstrated plasmodial infection by polymerase chain reaction amplification of 18S ribosomal RNA genes, including P. falciparum in 472, Plasmodium malariae i

Detection of GB virus C genomic sequence in the cerebrospinal fluid of a HIV-infected patient in China: a case report and literature review.

Hepatitis G virus or GB virus C (GBV-C) is a human virus of the Flaviviridae family that is structurally and epidemiologically closest to hepatitis C virus, but replicates primarily in lymphocytes. Co-infection with GBV-C has been reported to confer beneficial outcomes in some HIV-positive patients. Up to now, however, studies on GBV-C infection in the central nervous system (CNS) of HIV-infected patient have rarely been reported. Herein, we report on a 32-year-old HIV-1-infected patient with cerebral toxoplasmosis and fungal encephalitis. GBV-C viral loads were detected in CSF by quantitative

Prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma hominis in urogenital tract of Brazilian women.

BACKGROUND: The role of Mycoplasma hominis and M. genitalium in urogenital tract infections remains unknown. Furthermore these mollicutes present a complex relationship with the host immune response. The role of inflammatory cytokines in infections also makes them good candidates to investigate bacterial vaginosis and mycoplasma genital infections. Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect the above-mentioned mollicutes by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) methodologies in vaginal swabs and dosage of cytokines. METHODS: Vaginal swabs and peripheral blood were collected from 3

Identification of broadly protective human antibodies to Pseudomonas aeruginosa exopolysaccharide Psl by phenotypic screening.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading cause of hospital-associated infections in the seriously ill, and the primary agent of chronic lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. A major obstacle to effective control of P. aeruginosa infections is its intrinsic resistance to most antibiotic classes, which results from chromosomally encoded drug-efflux systems and multiple acquired resistance mechanisms selected by years of aggressive antibiotic therapy. These factors demand new strategies and drugs to prevent and treat P. aeruginosa infections. Herein, we describe a monoclonal antibody (mAb) sele

Prevalence and clinical aspects of respiratory syncytial virus A and B groups in children seen at Hospital de Clínicas of Uberlândia, MG, Brazil.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is well recognized as the most important pathogen causing acute respiratory disease in infants and young children, mainly in the form of bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Two major antigenic groups, A and B, have been identified; however, there is disagreement about the severity of the diseases caused by these two types. This study investigated a possible association between RSV groups and severity of disease. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to characterize 128 RSV nasopharyngeal specimens from children less than five years old experiencing

Sonographic findings in fetal viral infections: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Viral infections are a major cause of fetal morbidity and mortality. Transplacental transmission of the virus, even in subclinical maternal infection, may result in a severe congenital syndrome. Prenatal detection of viral infection is based on fetal sonographic findings and polymerase chain reaction to identify the specific infectious agent. Most affected fetuses appear sonographically normal, but serial scanning may reveal evolving findings. Common sonographic abnormalities, although nonspecific, may be indicative of fetal viral infections. These include growth restriction, ascit

Endothelin in a murine model of cerebral malaria.

Cerebral malaria (CM) remains a deadly complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection, and children are at high risk of developing encephalopathy as a result of CM. This is probably a consequence of the activation of many of the inflammatory cytokines as well as the glial cells and the vascular endothelium in the brain. We have previously demonstrated that there is a striking reduction in cerebral blood flow by magnetic resonance imaging when mice are infected with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA), and we now demonstrate a possible role for endothelin (ET-1) in the pathogenesis of CM. The brains

[Infectious and metabolic nervous system complications of systemic cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To review the incidence and causes of the infections and metabolic diseases of the nervous system in patients with systemic neoplasias. DEVELOPMENT: Patients with immunodeficiency, particularly those with hematological neoplasias and persons treated with immunosuppressive drugs have a considerable tendency to infection due to opportunist germs. Infections of the nervous system are relatively rare (0.02%-1%) and the commonest neoplasms are lymphomas, especially those of Hodgkin type and lymphosarcomas. The most frequent infections are caused by the herpes virus, meningitis due to Li
