BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts are fluid-filled sacs containing immature forms of parastic tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus. The most prevalent and serious complication of hydatid disease is intrabiliary rupture, also known as cystobiliary fistulae. In this study, a sporadic case of biliary obstruction, cholangitis, and septicemia is described secondary to hydatid cyst rupture into the common bile duct and intraperitoneal cavity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old Iranian man was admitted to the emergency ward with 5 days of serious sickness and a history of right upper quadrant abdominal pain, f…

Background: Cystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease that develops in endemic areas due to the transmission of Echinococcus granulosus. The liver is the organ most affected. The most frequent symptoms include pain, palpable mass, jaundice, and fever. Diagnosis is based on epidemiologic history, examination, imaging, and serologic tests. Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with hepatic echinococcosis diagnosed in our center. We collected data from our patients regarding personal history, cyst characteristics, surgery performed, and post-operative complicatio…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors related to new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) and the significance of IL-6.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data from 64 patients who received either a living donor liver transplantation or a donation after circulatory death from September 2013 to October 2020 and attended regular follow-up visits for six or more months. During follow-up, patients were randomized into groups and followed up until the completion of the study or the death of the patient.
RESULTS: The incidence of NODM was 31.25% (n = 20). The median age in

Hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE), is a cosmopolitan parasitic zoonosis. Autochtonous HCE cases are rare and the majority of cases are imported from endemic areas. It induces the development in the liver of Echinococcus granulosus larvae. Extrahepatic localizations are also possible. Cyst development is slow with an often-late diagnosis. In Switzerland, HCE discovery is usually fortuitous, during an abdominal radiological examination. More rarely, an acute clinical picture reveals a complication that can be severe or even fatal. The diagnosis is based on ultrasound findings that allows cyst …

Cystic hepatic lesions are frequent and sometimes large. They are generally asymptomatic and discovered by chance. The differential diagnosis of these lesions includes congenital, post-traumatic, benign or malignant tumors, as well as infectious pathologies. Conventional or contrast ultrasonography, abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can be used to characterize them. Therapeutic abstention with or without iconographic monitoring constitutes the optimal management of many benign liver cysts without clinical repercussions. Treatments for symptomatic or potentially aggre

Human cystic echinococcosis, caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, has been reported a near-cosmopolitan zoonotic disease. Various infiltrating immune cells gather around the lesion and produce a lesion microenvironment; however, cellular composition and heterogeneity in hepatic cystic echinococcosis lesion microenvironments are incompletely understood. Here, 81,865 immune cells isolated from peripheral blood, perilesion liver tissue, and adjacent normal liver tissue from four cystic echinococcosis patients were profiled using single-cell RNA sequencing. We identifi…

Over decades, surgery has been the only accepted mode of treatment for liver hydatid cysts. It had been a surgical dogma for a long that hydatid disease is an absolute contraindication for needle puncture/aspiration as it can cause anaphylaxis, death, and dissemination. We envisaged prospectively perform percutaneous drainage as a primary form of treatment for hepatic hydatidosis. Through extensive and very careful experimentation, we proved that aspiration of hydatid cysts can be performed safely and is the ideal way to manage a subset of patients with hydatid cysts in the liver. The patient

BACKGROUND: The liver is the most common organ for settlement of hydatic cyst disease. All acknowledged protoscolicidals that are used for echinococcus degeneration have a risk of caustic secondary sclerosing cholangitis. The sodium hypochlorite is an effective protoscolicidal agent for treatment of hydatid liver cysts in vitro.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the safe usability of sodium hypochlorite for the treatment of hydatid cyst in the hepatobiliary system in an experimental rat model.
METHODS: This experimental study designed as one side blinded animal study. Study was carr…

BACKGROUND: Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma (BMPM) is one of the rarest diseases in medicine with only more than 200 cases worldwide. This paper aims to report a case of Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma that strangely arose from the liver and was long treated as Hydatid cyst. The case also had many risk factors including asbestos exposure that had not yet been linked with Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 62 years old male with a history of a perforated peptic ulcer and a cystic mass in the liver that was misdiagnosed as

Metastatic deposits from primary ovarian malignancy can manifest as cystic masses in the liver. In endemic areas, hydatid disease is an important differential in all cases of cystic hepatic masses. We report a case of a 55-year-old lady who presented with progressive abdominal distension and was diagnosed with primary ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma. Imaging revealed concurrent lesions in the liver that were thought to be metastatic deposits but was later diagnosed as hydatid cyst based on radiologic features and serology. We report this rare case to highlight the importance of suspecting
