Lesioning the vagus nerve in the neck (cervical vagotomy) results in a rapid and virtually complete loss of motoneurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus in neonatal rats. The present study sought to determine whether access to gastric target tissue will promote the survival of these motoneurons after axotomy. We studied 27 patients with severe chronic diarrhea for which extensive investigations carried out at other institutions had failed to reveal a diagnosis.
