Serum concentrations of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) and pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) were measured in 99 women between the 6th and 10th gestational week, before the onset of pregnancy-threatening complications. The markers failed to predict threatening abortion appearing 9-112 days after sampling (n = 11), regardless of whether the pregnancy continued (n = 2) or ended with abortion (n = 9). Normal HCG and SP1 values were observed in 4 women who subsequently had preterm delivery. 14 women with daily vomiting had higher mean serum concentrations of HCG (p less than 0.01)

In order to study Leydig cell function in patients with varicoceles, we determined plasma levels of the most important testicular steroids, 17-OH-progesterone (17-OH-P) and testosterone (T) in the basal condition and after hCG stimulation. There was a significant inverse linear correlation between age, plasma testosterone, and 17-OH-P (n = 65, r = 0.316, P = 0.01, n = 48, r = 0.532, P = 0.01). Ovarian resection was performed by means of celioscopy in 12 patients with polycystic ovaries (PCO), who had not responded to clomiphene + HCG therapy. This therapy had induced ovulation in only 14% of 56 therapeutic cycles. Ovarian resection through celioscopy induced ovulation in 45% of cycles. Twelve pregnancies, in which the initial serum hCG titer as measured by RRA was subnormal, were studied to determine if a hormonal profile would serve as a prognostic index of spontaneous abortion. During the antenatal care of 604 women 1629 blood samples for hormonal tests were collected. The values in 417 women with normal pregnancies were used to establish a normal curve with 99% tolerance for the serum concentrations of human chorionic gonatrophin (HCG), human placental lactogen (HPL), progesterone and oestriol.
