Treatment with praziquantel for neurocysticercosis frequently induces adverse reactions due to acute destruction of parasites; these reactions are suppressed by dexamethasone therapy. The effect of diazepam on brain histamine turnover was examined in mice. The steady state levels of histamine and tele-methylhistamine remained unchanged following the i.p. administration of 0.2-20 mg/kg of diazepam. Clioquinol can increase the penetration of metallic cations through cellular membranes by forming lipophilic metal-chelates. It is suggested that the pathogenesis of SMON may involve an accumulation of injurious metals in nervous tissues due to facilitated uptake by complex formation with clioquinol. The Japanese have been more heavily exposed to metals by environmental pollution than the inhabitants of other countries, which may explain the prevalent occurrence of SMON in Japan.

The effect of erythromycin on the quantitative pattern of urinary excretion of theophylline and its known metabolites at steady state in eight human subjects was examined. The percent of dose excreted of the various compounds in the absence and presence of the antibiotic were as follows: theophylline, 9.3% vs. 16.3%; 1, 3-dimethyluric acid, 51.9% vs. 59.6%; 3-methylxanthine, 11.9% vs. 13.0%; and 1-methyluric acid, 27.3% vs. 31.6%. These results show that erythromycin did not influence the metabolism of theophylline under the experimental protocol employed.

The hypothesis that neuroleptics increase the risk of epileptic seizures after metrizamide myelography was not confirmed in a series of 77 patients, 26 with and 51 without levomepromazine medication, before and after lumbar metrizamide myelography. After the administration of aminopyrine with or without barbital to rats, aminopyrine and its main metabolites were detected in plasma and the brain by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It was clarified that a marked increase of 4-monomethylaminoantipyrine was observed in the case of coadministration of aminopyrine and barbital, while the plasma level of aminopyrine decreased significantly compared with single administration.
