Lower alpha frequency of intraoperative frontal EEG is associated with postoperative delirium: A secondary propensity-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a serious complication of surgery, especially in the elderly patient population. It has been proposed that decreasing the amount of anesthetics by titrating to an EEG index will lower POD rate, but clear evidence is missing. A strong age-dependent negative correlation has been reported between the peak oscillatory frequency of alpha waves and end-tidal anesthetic concentration, with older patients generating slower alpha frequencies. We hypothesized, that slower alpha oscillations are associated with a higher rate of POD. METHOD: Retrospective analy

The Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism: Overview.

Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are commonly occurring, heritable and polygenic disorders with etiological origins in the brain and the environment. To outline the causes and consequences of alcohol-related milestones, including AUD, and their related psychiatric comorbidities, the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) was launched in 1989 with a gene-brain-behavior framework. COGA is a family based, diverse (~25% self-identified African American, ~52% female) sample, including data on 17,878 individuals, ages 7-97 years, in 2246 families of which a proportion are densely affect

An Experimental Therapeutics Approach to the Development of a Novel Computerized Treatment Targeting Error-Related Brain Activity in Young Children.

In the current study, we utilize an experimental medicine approach to examine the extent to which a single-session, computerized intervention impacts a transdiagnostic neural marker of risk (i.e., the error-related negativity [ERN]) in 70 children between the ages of 6 and 9 years. The ERN is a deflection in the event-related potential occurring after an individual makes a mistake on a lab-based task and has been shown to be transdiagnostically associated with a variety of anxiety disorders (e.g., social anxiety, generalized anxiety), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depressive disorders in

EEG microstate co-specificity in schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The past 20 years of research on EEG microstates has yielded the hypothesis that the imbalance pattern in the temporal dynamics of microstates C (increased) and D (decreased) is specific to schizophrenia. A similar microstate imbalance has been recently found in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the present high-density EEG study was to examine whether this pathological microstate pattern is co-specific to schizophrenia and OCD. We compared microstate temporal dynamics using Bayesian analyses, transition probabilities analyses and the Topographic Electrophysiological State Source

Comparing resting state and task-based EEG using machine learning to predict vulnerability to depression in a non-clinical population.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects a large portion of the population and levies a huge societal burden. It has serious consequences like decreased productivity and reduced quality of life, hence there is considerable interest in understanding and predicting it. As it is a mental disorder, neural measures like EEG are used to study and understand its underlying mechanisms. However most of these studies have either explored resting state EEG (rs-EEG) data or task-based EEG data but not both, we seek to compare their respective efficacy. We work with data from non-clinically depressed indivi

Applications of brain-computer interfaces in neurodegenerative diseases.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide the central nervous system with channels of direct communication to the outside world, without having to go through the peripheral nervous system. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are notoriously incurable and burdensome medical conditions that will result in progressive deterioration of the nervous system. The applications of BCIs in NDs have been studied for decades now through different approaches, resulting in a considerable amount of literature in all related areas. In this study, we begin by introducing BCIs and proceed by explaining the principle

Medial prefrontal transcranial alternating current stimulation for apathy in Huntington's disease.

We investigated the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) targeted to the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and administered at either delta or alpha frequencies, on brain activity and apathy in people with Huntington's disease (HD) (n = 17). Given the novelty of the protocol, neurotypical controls (n = 20) were also recruited. All participants underwent three 20-min sessions of tACS; one session at alpha frequency (Individualised Alpha Frequency (IAF), or 10 Hz when an IAF was not detected); one session at delta frequency (2 Hz); and a session of sham tACS. Pa

Pain chronification impacts whole-brain functional connectivity in women with hip osteoarthritis during pain stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with chronic pain display altered functional connectivity across distributed brain areas involved in the processing of nociceptive stimuli. The aim of the present study was to investigate how pain chronification modulates whole-brain functional connectivity during evoked clinical and tonic pain. METHODS: Patients with osteoarthritis of the hip (n = 87) were classified into 3 stages of pain chronification (Grades I-III, Mainz Pain Staging System). Electroencephalograms were recorded during 3 conditions: baseline, evoked clinical

Epileptic nystagmus as clinical manifestation of self-limited focal epilepsy: Rethinking etiology and prognostic value and literature review.

Epileptic nystagmus (EN) is an uncommon ictal clinical manifestation characterized by rapid, repetitive eyeballs movements. Few cases of EN have been reported and, in most cases, electro-clinical correlation showed a focal EEG activity, mainly in the occipital and temporo-occipital areas. Although EN occurs both in idiopathic and non-idiopathic epilepsy, the most frequent cause appears to be inborn or acquired alteration of brain structures. We report of a 12-year-old girl with EN as ictal manifestation of self-limited focal seizures. We described clinical manifestations, electroencephalograph

An explainable and interpretable model for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children using EEG signals.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person's sleep, mood, anxiety, and learning. Early diagnosis and timely medication can help individuals with ADHD perform daily tasks without difficulty. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals can help neurologists to detect ADHD by examining the changes occurring in it. The EEG signals are complex, non-linear, and non-stationary. It is difficult to find the subtle differences between ADHD and healthy control EEG signals visually. Also, making decisions from existing machine learning (ML) mo

Electric Field, Ictal Theta Power, and Clinical Outcomes in Electroconvulsive Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is efficacious for treatment-resistant depression. Treatment-induced cognitive impairment can adversely impact functional outcomes. Our pilot study linked the electric field to ictal theta power from a single suprathreshold treatment and linked ictal theta power to changes in phonemic fluency. In this study, we set out to replicate our findings and expand upon the utility of ictal theta power as a potential cognitive biomarker. METHODS: Twenty-seven participants (18 female and 9 male) received right unilateral ECT for treatment-resistant depression.

Neurophysiology State Dynamics Underlying Acute Neurologic Recovery After Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Epileptiform activity and burst suppression are neurophysiology signatures reflective of severe brain injury after cardiac arrest. We aimed to delineate the evolution of coma neurophysiology feature ensembles associated with recovery from coma after cardiac arrest. METHODS: Adults in acute coma after cardiac arrest were included in a retrospective database involving 7 hospitals. The combination of 3 quantitative EEG features (burst suppression ratio [BSup], spike frequency [SpF], and Shannon entropy [En]) was used to define 5 distinct neurophysiology states: epilept

Neocortical and medial temporal seizures have distinct impacts on brain responsiveness.

Focal epileptic seizures are characterized by abnormal neuronal discharges that can spread to other cortical areas and interfere with brain activity, thereby altering the patient's experience and behavior. The origin of these pathological neuronal discharges encompasses various mechanisms that converge toward similar clinical manifestations. Recent studies have suggested that medial temporal lobe (MTL) and neocortical (NC) seizures are often underpinned by two characteristic onset patterns, which, respectively, affect and spare synaptic transmission in cortical slices. However, these synaptic
