French validation of the Multiple Sclerosis Work Difficulties Questionnaire (MSWDQ-23) with determination of cutoff scores: A valuable tool in clinical practice.

Work difficulties are a primary issue of multiple sclerosis (MS). This is because disease onset usually occurs during a time when establishing a career and employment is of paramount importance. The MSWDQ-23 (Multiple Sclerosis Work Difficulties Questionnaire) was developed to assess work difficulties in MS. The WORKSEP project aimed to adapt and validate the French MSWDQ-23 and develop cutoff scores through a multicentric study in 14 centers across France. Two hundred and six persons with MS were recruited: 149 with relapsing-remitting MS and 57 with progressive forms of MS. They completed th…

Psychiatric morbidity and work participation in patients with congenital ventricular septal defects: a case-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: The burden of psychiatric morbidity, level of education, and work participation are currently unknown in patients with congenita … lation. It is important to consider longer-term impacts on mental health, education, and subsequent employment in patients with VSD, in addition to cardiovascular effects, as these factors severely affect quality of life and have direct socioeconomic implications on an individual and societal level.

Association between occupations and selected noncommunicable diseases: A matched case-control among Thai informal workers.

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a matched case-control study of informal workers to determine the association between occupational classification and selected types of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). METHOD: We extracted data of patients aged ≥18 years from the Thai National Health Security Office database (NHSO) during 2011-2014. Cases were patients who had a primary diagnosis of: diabetes mellitus (E10-E14), hypertension (I10-I15), ischemic heart disease (I20-I25) or stroke (I60-69), or thyroid gland disorder (E00-E07). Controls were patients who had a primary diagnosis of intestinal or parasitic

Is Self-reported Return to Duty an Adequate Indicator of Return to Sport and/or Return to Function in Military Patients?

BACKGROUND: In the military, return-to-duty status has commonly been used as a functional outcome measure after orthopaedic surgery. This is sometimes regarded similarly to return to sports or as an indicator of return to full function. However, there is variability in how return-to-duty data are reported in clinical research studies, and it is unclear whether return-to-duty status alone can be used as a surrogate for return to sport or whether it is a useful marker for return to full function. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What proportion of military patients who reported return to duty also retur

Prospective study on the association between serum amino acid profiles and depressive symptoms among the Japanese working population.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence suggests that amino acids, particularly tryptophan and glutamate, play an important role in the pathology of depression, but prospective epidemiologic data on this issue is scarce. We examined the association between circulating amino acids and the risk of depressive symptoms in a Japanese working population. METHODS: Participants were 841 workers who were free from depressive symptoms and provided blood at baseline and completed 3-yr follow-up survey. 30 varieties of amino acid concentrations in serum were measured using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometr

Social Independence of Patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 in Japan: Analysis of a National Registry of Patients Receiving Medical Expense Subsidies, 2004-2013.

Although it is important for patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) to live independently and maintain good quality of life (QOL), no study has examined the social independence status in this patient population. This study aimed to examine the state of social independence and its contributing factors in patients with NF2 using data from a national registry in Japan during the past decade. A database provided by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan that contained information about all patients with newly submitted claims for medical expense subsidies for NF2 in Japan betwee

Prevalence of prescribed benzodiazepine long-term use in the French general population according to sociodemographic and clinical factors: findings from the CONSTANCES cohort.

BACKGROUND: Data are lacking regarding the prevalence of benzodiazepine long-term use in the general population. Our aim was to examine the prevalence of prescribed benzodiazepine long-term use (BLTU) according to sociodemographic and clinical factors in the French general population. METHODS: Data came from 4686 men and 4849 women included in 2015 in the French population-based CONSTANCES cohort. BLTU was examined using drug reimbursement administrative registries from 2009 to 2015. Analyses were weighted to provide results representative of the French general population covered by the gener

Creation of Experience-based Celiac Benchmarks: The First Step in Pretransition Self-management Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Transition planning for children with chronic disease includes the development of independence in many self-management tasks. Conditions that depend on diet have distinct skill sets not well assessed by the traditional transition-readiness tools. There has been literature that describes age-appropriate skill acquisition for diabetes and food allergy patients. There are, however, no age-appropriate benchmarks established for celiac disease (CD). METHODS: CD experts (including physician, nurse, dietician, social worker, patient, and parent) created a list of celiac-related tasks, wh

The aim of this study was to illuminate non-exercising pregnant women's views and experiences concerning exercise before and during pregnancy. METHOD: The study had a qualitative design with an inductive approach and was analysed by content analysis. A total of 16 individual and face-to-face interviews were conducted with healthy pregnant women, mainly in the third trimester and living in Sweden

Associations of fatigue to work-related stress, mental and physical health in an employed community sample.

BACKGROUND: While work-related fatigue has become an issue of concern among European employees, the relationship between fatigue, depression and work-related stressors is far from clear. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the associations of fatigue with work-related stressors, severe medical disease, health behavior and depression in the working population and (2) to determine the unique impact of work-related stressors on fatigue. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data of N = 7,930 working participants enrolled in the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) from 2007 to 2012 filled out th

Job insecurity and risk of diabetes: a meta-analysis of individual participant data.

BACKGROUND: Job insecurity has been associated with certain health outcomes. We examined the role of job insecurity as a risk factor for incident diabetes. METHODS: We used individual participant data from 8 cohort studies identified in 2 open-access data archives and 11 cohort studies participating in the Individual-Participant-Data Meta-analysis in Working Populations Consortium. We calculated study-specific estimates of the association between job insecurity reported at baseline and incident diabetes over the follow-up period. We pooled the estimates in a meta-analysis to produce a summary

Work Factors, Work-Family Conflict, the Theory of Planned Behaviour and Healthy Intentions: A Cross-Cultural Study.

The present study examined the roles of work factors (i.e. job demands and job resources), work-family conflicts and culture on predictors of healthy intentions (fruit and vegetable consumption, low-fat diet and physical activity) within the framework of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Employees from the United Kingdom (N = 278) and Malaysia (N = 325) participated in the study. Results indicated that higher job demands were significantly related to lower intentions to eat a low-fat diet. Women reported higher intentions to eat a low-fat diet than men did, while participants from the Uni
