In this paper we have attempted to determine if there are any aspects of the academic history of a student, prior to admission to the University of Leicester medical course, that correlate with his or her subsequent performance in that course. The analyses presented suggest that a student's overall performance in GCE O- and A-level examinations correlates with subsequent performance at various stages of the medical course. A population-based case-control study of leukaemia and residential proximity to electricity supply equipment has been carried out in south-east England. The prescribing habits of all (401) general practitioners in the North Staffordshire health district for the treatment of otorrhoea was ascertained by questionnaire; 301 (75%) responded. Of those, 198 (66%) would not give topical treatment when the tympanic membrane was perforated. Only 41 (14%) would give topical treatment in cases of discharging grommets. Although there is a theoretical risk of ototoxicity to aminoglycosides in topical preparations, this is the most effective medical treatment and is the standard teaching advocated in specialist textbooks and practised by otolaryngologists.

A consecutive series of 16 cases of psoas abscess managed over a 10-year period at the Bristol Royal Infirmary is presented. Tuberculosis accounted for 4 patients all normally resident in the United Kingdom. Intraabdominal inflammatory disorders accounted for 9 of the cases with Crohn's disease being the commonest of these with 5 cases. Specialist infertility practice was studied in a group of 708 couples within a population of residents of a single health district in England. They represented an annual incidence of 1.2 couples for every 1000 of the population. Type C botulism in turkeys has been confirmed on several production sites by demonstrating the presence of toxin in sera from affected birds. Only male turkeys were affected, mortalities being up to 30 per cent. No source of toxin was found. Possible modes of intoxication are discussed.

To examine changes in medical students' smoking behaviour, knowledge and opinion over the last decade, a survey first conducted at the University of Manchester Medical School in 1972 was repeated in 1981. A postal questionnaire was sent to 1163 students, of whom 1112 (96%) replied. A substantial decline in cigarette smoking among medical students has occurred. The British pathologist Almroth Wright generally is credited with the initiation of typhoid vaccination in 1896. His claims of priority were challenged as early as 1907 in favor of Richard Pfeiffer, a German bacteriologist and a student of Robert Koch. A review of the original literature of the 1890s and the early 1900s revealed that several groups were working on typhoid vaccine at the same time and that the credit for the initiation of typhoid vaccine studies should be shared by these two great researchers.

A study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy has shown an approximate prevalence of the disease among schoolboys to be 1 in 4000. Fifty-four families were available for genetic studies. In 19 families there were further affected cases and in 34 families the index patients was an isolated case. The proportion of affected brothers was 0.22 (11 of 50).
