Food-Borne Environmental Contaminants, Intestinal Injury, and Early Childhood Stunting: A Developmental Toxicology Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Childhood stunting (height-for-age z-score < -2 SD) remains a global developmental health burden. Traditional interventions centered on nutrition and infection have reached a bottleneck. Emerging evidence identifies chronic low-dose dietary environmental toxins as an independent, modifiable risk factor for early-life growth restriction. METHODS: This review synthesizes cohort studies, meta-analyses, and in vivo toxicological models published over the past decade to characterize exposures to mycotoxins, toxic heavy metals, and food-borne endocrine disruptors that are closely associ

Aromatic amine antioxidants (AAs) and p-phenylenediamine quinones (PPD-Qs) exposure, thyroid hormones, and cognitive function in older adults: Association and potential mediation analyses.

Aromatic amine antioxidants (AAs) and p-phenylenediamine quinones (PPD-Qs) are novel environmental contaminants derived from tire wear, with emerging neurotoxic concerns, but epidemiological evidence linking them to cognitive health is lacking. This study investigated associations between exposure to these chemicalsand cognitive performance in older adults, and explored the potential mediating role of thyroid hormones. We measured urinary concentrations of nineteen AAs and six PPD-Qs in 439 older adults from Shenzhen, China, and assessed cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examinati

Environmental exposure and pulmonary toxicity: Integrated computational network toxicology and RNA-seq analysis uncovers public health implications of sulfur mustard contamination.

Sulfur mustard (SM), a persistent environmental contaminant in conflict zones, induces severe pulmonary and systemic toxicity through airborne, soil, and groundwater exposure routes. While the mechanisms and core targets of SM remain complex, computational network toxicology predicted six core targets (PTGS2, ESR1, APP, SIRT1, ACE, CASP3) converging on environmental stress responses, neurotoxicity cascades, and metabolic dysregulation. These alterations drive immunotoxicity, inflammatory responses, cytogenetic mutations, and ultimately leading to lung injury. Critically, RNA-seq validation con

Species- and sex-specific bioaccumulation, tissue-specific distribution, and maternal transfer of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in tiger frogs (Hoplobatrachus chinensis) and forest frogs (Rana chensinensis).

Amphibians are sensitive biomonitors of environmental pollutants. However, existing research on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) between different species of amphibians is limited. In the present study, water, soil, tiger frog (Hoplobatrachus chinensis) and forest frog (Rana chensinensis) samples were collected from Qingyuan County, South China. The bioaccumulation, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer of 13 PFASs, including 9 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and 4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), in frogs were investigated. The ΣPFSA and ΣPFCA concentrations in f…

Multi-omics reveals the hepatic metabolic mechanism of neurological symptoms caused by selenium exposure in Przewalski's gazelle (Procapra przewalskii).

Neurological symptoms resulting from selenium(Se) exposure significantly impact the health and conservation of Przewalski's gazelle. In this study, we performed proteomic and metabolomic analyses of the liver in Przewalski's gazelle for the first time, aiming to reveal the hepatic metabolic mechanisms underlying the neurological symptoms caused by Se exposure. We identified 89 differentially expressed proteins and 30 metabolites with altered regulation. Using multi-omics integrated analysis, we identified a neurofunctional regulation network composed of three metabolic pathways, with (S)-3-ami

Quantum chemical calculations for predicting the partitioning of drug molecules in the environment.

Regional and temporal trends in legal and illicit drug use can be tracked through monitoring of municipal wastewater, ambient air, indoor air, and house dust. To assess the analytical result for the selected environmental matrix, reliable information on the partitioning of the target substance between the different compartments is required. The logarithmic partition coefficients octanol/water (log KOW), octanol/air (log KOA) and air/water (log KAW) are usually applied for this purpose. Most drug molecules are semi-volatile compounds with complex molecular structures, the handling of which is s

Assessment of potentially toxic elements in the soils of Moscow playgrounds: pollution sources and human health risks.

Playgrounds serve as the primary play areas in metropolitan areas for children - a demographic that is particularly vulnerable to environmental contaminants. Accumulation levels, spatial distribution, sources, and potential health risks to children of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in soils from 97 Moscow playgrounds were studied. Concentrations of 17 PTEs (Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sb, Ba, W, Pb, Bi) in bulk soil samples and PM1/PM10 fractions were determined using ICP-MS and ICP-AES. Most PTEs exceeded regional background levels. Compared to bulk samples, PTE concentr

Lead-contaminated groundwater exposes residents to health risks in Makululu, Zambia.

Groundwater contamination by lead (Pb) occurs commonly in historically mined regions and presents health risks to exposed residents. Poor documentation of elevated Pb levels in underserved regions prevents the development of environmental contamination policies and interventions. This study investigates Pb contamination and associated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks in Makululu, a large compound near the former Pb mine in Kabwe City, Zambia. We analyzed 34 drinking groundwater samples from hand pump boreholes (n = 21) and shallow wells (n = 13). Pb concentrations exceeded WHO an

Ecological risks of molybdenum in black shale and carbonate areas: Exposure, health effects, and relation with selenium.

Excessive molybdenum (Mo) intake poses potential health risks, particularly to liver and kidney function. Black shales are natural reservoirs of Mo and selenium (Se). Se mitigates heavy metal toxicity in humans. However, the exposure levels of Mo and its interactions with Se in black shale areas remain poorly understood. In this study, Mo exposure in Enshi, China, where clastic, carbonate, and black shales coexist, was investigated. The results revealed that the soil Mo concentration increased from clastic (1.03 μg/g) to carbonate (1.87 μg/g) to black shale (14.28 μg/g) areas. Rice provides mo

Subchronic Exposure to Regulated Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids: Do We Need to Refine Our Exposure Assessment? A Full-Scale Case Study in a Canadian Municipality.

Regulated disinfection byproducts (e.g., trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids) in drinking water networks fluctuate spatially and temporally, depending on water sources and treatment practices with higher concentrations during the summer. Trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids monitoring is based on yearly averages of quarterly measurements with maximum acceptable concentrations where extensive monitoring of disinfection byproducts is not required during those months. Because of concerns that exposures of a short duration could result in adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes, it is vit

Study on the effect of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 coupled with the low molecular weight organic acid on the dissimilation reduction of Cd-containing goethite.

Microbial dissimilated iron reduction is one of the important driving forces of the biological and geochemical cycles of iron in nature. Plant root exudates dominated by organic acids are important electron donors of the rhizosphere dissimilar iron reduction microorganisms under flooded conditions. In this paper, we investigated the effects of different kinds and concentrations of organic acids on the dissimilation reduction process of goethite by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, and explored the effect of phase transformation of iron minerals on its adsorption of Cd. The results showed that the lo

Heavy metals in drinking water sources in northern Mexico: a review of concentrations and human health risks assessment.

Despite the high concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) in the water bodies of northern Mexico, current monitoring efforts and regulations are insufficient. This is especially troubling, given the indigenous and vulnerable communities and the overall lack of public health information. To characterize exposure, we conducted an exhaustive review of HM studies in drinking water in northern Mexico. This information was used to estimate hazard quotient (HQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) values by age for all of northern Mexico. In total, 316 concentrations of HMs were reported in 55 studies from 1975 to

Environmental factors mediate mercury exposure in fish with diverse feeding habits in the Beibu Gulf.

Tropical and subtropical oceans, including the Beibu Gulf, a key fishing area in China, receive a substantial share of global mercury (Hg) deposition, yet the exposure levels and influencing factors in marine organisms remain underexplored. This study analyzed total and methylated Hg (THg and MeHg) concentrations in 650 fish from 10 species across 24 sites in the eastern Beibu Gulf in April and August 2022, along with concurrent surface water parameter measurements. The significant variations in fish Hg content across species were primarily driven by feeding habits, with benthic feeders exhibi

Constructed wetlands for the mitigation of pesticide and heavy metal concentrations in a protected agrolandscape: removal efficiencies and ecological risk assessment.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are increasingly recognised as nature-based solutions, offering key ecosystem services such as the mitigation of pollutants in agricultural landscapes. This study assessed the effectiveness of two surface-flow CWs, Tancat de la Pipa and Tancat de L'Illa, located within the Albufera de València Natural Park (Spain), in reducing pesticide and heavy metal concentrations between inlet and outlet waters (directly/indirectly connected to a protected lagoon) between 2020 and 2025 (including a historic rainfall and flooding event, leading to significantly higher concentratio

Molecular mechanisms of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) toxicity: Insights from various biological systems.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is a ubiquitous brominated flame retardant extensively incorporated into a wide range of products. As its utilization has escalated, its environmental exposure risks have concomitantly increased. The molecular properties of TBBPA allow it to persist in the environment and within organisms. In this review, we comprehensively examine the toxicity of TBBPA across different organ systems and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. We particularly emphasize TBBPA's impact on biological signaling pathways, protein functionality, cellular architecture, and epigene

Socio-demographic inequalities influence differences in the chemical exposome among Swedish adolescents.

Relatively little is known about the relationship between socio-demographic factors and the chemical exposome in adolescent populations. This knowledge gap hampers global efforts to meet certain UN sustainability goals. The present work addresses this problem in Swedish adolescents by discerning patterns within the chemical exposome and identify demographic groups susceptible to heightened exposures. Enlisting the Riksmaten Adolescents 2016-17 (RMA) study population (N = 1082) in human-biomonitoring, and using proportional odds ordinal logistic regression models, we examined the associations b

Simulating desegregation through affordable housing development: An environmental health impact assessment of Connecticut zoning law.

Residential segregation drives exposure and health inequities. We projected the mortality impacts among low-income residents of leveraging an existing 10% affordable housing target as a case study of desegregation policy. We simulated movement into newly allocated housing, quantified changes in six ambient environmental exposures, and used exposure-response functions to estimate deaths averted. Across 1000 simulations, in one year, we found on average 169 (95% CI: 84, 255) deaths averted from changes in greenness, 71 (49, 94) deaths averted from NO2, 9 (4, 14) deaths averted from noise, 1 (1,

Bioaccumulation in fish (Cyprinodon variegatus) during rejuvenations of a thin active cap over field-aged PCB contaminated sediment: The effect of clean versus contaminated ongoing influx.

Repeated addition of activated carbon (AC) via the water column was applied to rejuvenate sorption capacity of thin AC-amended sand caps placed over polychlorinated biphenyl- (PCB) contaminated marine bed sediment receiving ongoing input of sediment (contaminated or clean) in mesocosms. Bioaccumulation of PCBs in sheepshead minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus) from bed sediment was reduced by repeated application of rejuvenating AC when the ongoing input was contaminated. However, when the input sediment was clean, the novel AC addition increased fish uptake of bedded PCBs in the first 60-days of t

Predicting health impacts of wildfire smoke in Amazonas basin, Brazil.

Worldwide, smoke from forest fires has deleterious health effects. Even so, because of the complexity of fire mechanics, public health authorities face challenges in forecasting and thus mitigating population exposure to smoke. The population in the Amazon basin regularly suffers from fire smoke tied to agriculture and land-use change. The people of Manaus, a city of two million in the center of the basin, suffer the consequences. The study herein evaluates the time lag between fire occurrence and hospital admission for cardiorespiratory illness. Understanding the time lag is key to forecastin
