Clinical effect of 5-fluorouracil or chromomycin-A3 alone, 5-fluorouracil + chromomycin-A3, and of the first two plus prednisolone on gastrointestinal and other solid tumors was evaluated. Out of 133 cases acceptable for evaluation, the number of responders was as follows: 3 (18.8%) of 6 cases treated with 5-fluorouracil alone, 1 (9.1%) of 11 cases treated with chromomycin-A3 or chromomycin-A3 hemisuccinate, 13 (21.7%) of 60 cases on the two-drug regimen, and 21 (45.7%) of 46 cases on the three-drug regimen. A follow-up study of 31 patients, 1 1/2 years after they underwent a mitral valve replacement with a Beall prosthesis, is reported. Eighty-four per cent of the patients experienced marked improvement of symptoms and are fully active. Late cardiac recatheterization has showed a decrease of pulmonary wedge pressure, both at rest and under exercise. The prosthesis area has been found to be smaller than the original size. Hemolysis related to the prosthesis is of moderate degree and the incidence of systemic embolism was 3.1%.

A latex agglutination (LA) method for detection of pneumococcal antigens was evaluated and compared with counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE). LA was 2 to 10 times more sensitive than CIE for the detection of purified capsular polysaccharides in defined media, but only when a 1+ or 2+ agglutination reaction was interpreted as positive. Pressure patterns recorded during urethral sphincterometry in 281 male patients have been analyzed and measurements of prostatic length, peak, plateau height and pressure area have been made. These parameters show significant correlations with the established pressure-flow index of urethral resistance. Sphincterometry is a useful adjunct to the established urodynamic techniques for the diagnosis of bladder outflow obstruction in the male patient.

Fifty patients with lymphocytic lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia underwent splenectomy for various combinations of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. All of these patients had advanced lymphoproliferative disease, and most had infiltration of bone marrow by neoplastic cells.
