Keratin K6c mutations cause focal palmoplantar keratoderma.

The palmoplantar keratodermas (PPKs) are a large group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous genodermatoses. The gene defects underlying many PPKs still need to be resolved to facilitate definitive molecular diagnosis and genetic counseling. Dominant-negative mutations in any of the four identified keratin genes, KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT16, or KRT17, cause pachyonychia congenita (PC), characterized by hypertrophic nail dystrophy and other ectodermal features. In PC, focal PPK (FPPK) is the most painful and debilitating phenotypic feature. Some families presenting with FPPK alone, or with minima

Family history of prostate and breast cancer and the risk of prostate cancer in the PSA era.

BACKGROUND: A family history of prostate cancer (PCa) or breast cancer (BCa) has been associated with the risk of PCa, but the risks were inconsistent in terms of the affected family members, and data in the PSA era are limited. METHODS: This study included a subcohort of the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study composed of a highly PSA screened population from 1986 to 2004 with 3,695 PCa cases identified. Questionnaires and a food frequency questionnaire were administered every other and every 4 years, respectively. Family history of PCa and BCa was ascertained in 1990, 1992, and 1996. All s

Cancer risk among the relatives of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death; the most consistently identified risk factors are smoking and family history. Our aims were to examine familial aggregations of pancreas and other cancers, and to determine the relative risk of the family members. METHODS: We prospectively collected data on the families of patients presenting with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Smoking habits and alcohol consumption of the probands were compared with the available statistics on the Italian population. Mortality from cancer was investigated in first-degree relati

Child Only Kinship Care Cases:The Unintended Consequences of TANF Policies for Families Who Have Health Problems and Disabilities.

The passage of the Personal Responsibility Work Opportunities Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996 changed the way America sought to help its most vulnerable citizens. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) legislation required families to work first. Many families with young children found the stringent requirements of TANF too restrictive for their needs. In this study a number of TANF customers were either physically ill or suffered mental health problems thus preventing them from finding suitable employment. Additionally they may have children who have health problems, which pre

The psychological impact of mammographic screening on women with a family history of breast cancer--a systematic review.

This systematic review aims to assess the psychological impact of mammographic screening on women with a family history of breast cancer. Women with a family history, and hence increased risk, of breast cancer are known to experience higher levels of anxiety about cancer. They are also often offered screening from an earlier age. The psychological consequences of screening are therefore of particular importance for this group of women. A comprehensive search of 4 electronic databases was conducted from 1982 to 2003, combining sets of terms relating to (1) breast screening or mammography (breas

Mood and anxiety symptoms among 140 children from alcoholic and control families.

OBJECTIVE: Children of alcoholics have been reported to have elevated levels of internalizing symptoms, including anxiety and depression. However, many studies have not adequately controlled for the influence of independent (i.e. not substance-induced) parental mood or anxiety disorders and other factors. The present evaluations assess the relationships of the family histories of alcohol use disorders and independent mood and anxiety disorders to internalizing symptoms in children of alcoholic and nonalcoholic subjects. METHOD: A behavioral checklist and a structured interview were administer

Lattice corneal dystrophy type II associated with familial amyloid polyneuropathy type IV.

BACKGROUND: Finnish-type familial amyloidosis (FAP-IV) is an autosomal, dominantly inherited disorder characterized by progressive polyneuropathy and lattice corneal dystrophy type II. The vast majority of families with this disorder originated from Finland. Only two families, in neighboring districts, have been reported in Japan previously. METHODS: The authors report two additional Japanese patients with FAF-IV. The proband, a 70-year-old man, had decreased perspiration and abnormal facial muscle movement. Results of neurologic examination showed bilateral facial and hypoglossal nerve palsi

Family history, age, and risk of fatal breast cancer.

A family history of breast cancer potentially identifies women at high risk for whom mammography may be especially valuable. The authors examined the association of fatal breast cancer and family history in a large, prospective study of US adults. After 6 years of follow-up, 880 cases of fatal breast cancer were observed in a cohort of 604,412 women who were cancer free at interview in 1982. Cox proportional hazards modeling found that a family history of breast cancer in a mother or sister was significantly related to fatal breast cancer risk (rate ratio = 1.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1

Using the double diamond framework to co-create and evaluate '1TeamActive': A physical activity and well-being intervention for police workers and their families.

Police work can be stressful, negatively affecting well-being and familial relationships. But, the influence of family-based interventions on such outcomes is unknown. Using co-creation, we employed the 'Double Diamond' framework in four British police forces to develop, deliver and evaluate '1TeamActive' - a physical activity intervention for police workers and their families. Multiple stakeholders (Team Police UK, Sport England, four UK police forces, police workers and families) participated in four longitudinal research phases. In Phase 1, literature reviews 'Discovered' the stress impacts

Family communication, death taboo, and advance directives: a cross-sectional study of institutionalized older adults in China.

BACKGROUND: A conceptually guided framework examining how family communication relates to advance directive completion rates among older adults may offer useful insights for improving end-of-life decision-making in aging societies. However, persistent inconsistencies across studies remain unresolved, coupled with limited mechanistic explanations. METHOD: The data are derived from a field survey project conducted in August 2023, targeting older adults residing in a public elder care institution in Hangzhou, China. This project collected data from 571 participants regarding their inclination tow

Genetic perspectives on transient global amnesia: A narrative review.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia that can last up to 24 h, in the absence of other neurological symptoms. The pathophysiology of TGA is still unknown and comprehensive studies exploring the genetic basis of TGA are lacking. The primary objective of this review is to examine the incidence and characteristics of familial TGA. A secondary objective is to identify any genes that may be associated with the condition. A literature search of Medline and Embase identified 19 relevant articles, including 6 prospective or retr

Daily Rumination Among Older Men and Women: The Role of Perceived Family and Nonfamily Social Partner Life Stress.

OBJECTIVES: Women tend to ruminate more than men, and are generally more hypervigilant to the emotions of others in order to maintain positive social ties. Thus, compared to men, women may ruminate more when their social partners have greater life stresses. However, the literature on stressful events typically focuses on individuals' experiences and perceptions of stressors experienced by specific social ties such as spousal partners and adult children. The purpose of this study was to examine links between perceptions of a broad array of family and nonfamily social partner stresses and daily

A Window into the Use of Post-diagnostic Services for Autism and Parents' Perspective on the Quality of Early Childhood Services Trajectory in a Canadian Province.

The pathway for post-diagnostic services for autism tends to be complex, heterogeneous, and fraught with delays. This situation has repercussions for families' experience with care systems, the quality of early interventions, and family adjustment. To date, studies of parents' point of view on autism services have predominantly focused on the diagnostic phase of the services trajectory. The goal of the present study was to investigate the perspective of parents on autism early childhood services within a public healthcare and social services system in a Canadian province (Québec). Participants

Replication and extension of the military family stress model: The after deployment adaptive parenting tools ADAPT4U study.

The military family stress (MFS) model conceptualizes that wartime deployments and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are associated with couple, parenting, and child adjustment difficulties. The aim of this study was to replicate and extend the military family stress model by examining the associations among deployment length, PTSD symptoms, marital functioning, parenting practices, and child adjustment in a replication sample of both National Guard and Reserve (NG/R) as well as active-duty service member families. The MFS model is extended to test whether these relationships vary

Small vessel disease in primary familial brain calcification with novel truncating PDGFB variants.

INTRODUCTION: Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) is a neurodegenerative disease characterised by bilateral calcification in the brain, especially in the basal ganglia, leading to neurological and neuropsychiatric manifestations. White matter hyperintensities (WMH) have been described in patients with PFBC and pathogenic variants in the gene for platelet-derived growth factor beta polypeptide (PDGFB), suggesting a manifest cerebrovascular process. We present below the cases of two PFBC families with PDGFB variants and stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) episodes. We examine the

Family Accommodation of Symptoms in Adults With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Factor Structure and Usefulness of the Family Accommodation Scale for OCD-Patient Version.

For individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), family accommodation of symptoms, such as over-reassurance, participation in rituals, or facilitation of avoidance, is one of the key factors associated with symptom severity, maintenance, and related impairment. Most studies have assessed accommodation behaviors based on reports from family members or other loved ones. Recently, a patient-rated questionnaire, the Family Accommodation Scale for OCD-Patient Version (FAS-PV) was developed to assess family accommodation from the patient's perspective. This study investigated the factor str
