Hemihyperaesthesia and hyperresponsiveness resembling central pain syndrome in a dog with a forebrain oligodendroglioma.

A 4-year-old male Boxer was presented with neurological signs referable to a right forebrain lesion that was confirmed with computed tomography. Whilst characteristic signs of a unilateral forebrain lesion were observed, the dominant and striking finding was a right-sided hemisensory disturbance characterised by hyperaesthesia and hyperresponsiveness. Necropsy revealed a gelatinous mass confined to the right forebrain that was identified histologically as an oligodendroglioma. The lesion was centred on the internal capsule and involved ventral frontal and temporal lobes and the ventrolateral t

Neurotransmitters, peptides, and neural cell adhesion molecules in the cortices of normal elderly humans and Alzheimer patients: a comparison.

Immunocytochemical techniques was used to compare the proportion of neurons expressing various neurotransmitters (tyrosine hydroxylase, choline acetyltransferase and gamma-aminobutyric acid), neuropeptides (Leu-enkephalin and substance P) and neural cell adhesion molecules (NCAM) in the hippocampus, frontal (area 10) and occipital (area 17) cortices of neurologically normal elderly humans to that of age-matched Alzheimer disease (AD) patients. There was no difference in the proportion of GABAergic and cholinergic cells between the normal and AD groups in all three brain regions studied. Howeve

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma: some observations.

The authors describe 3 cases of cerebral pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, one of which has an unusual neuroradiological appearance, and review the clinical and prognostic features of the 96 cases reported in the literature. Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is a neuroectodermal tumor that affects young patients, in a superficial or supratentorial site, most frequently at the temporal level. It is difficult to formulate a differential diagnosis with other neuroectodermal tumors or with meningioma on the basis et neuroradiological appearance, as demonstrated by one of the cases reported here. The prog

Linkage of frontotemporal dementia to chromosome 17: clinical and neuropathological characterization of phenotype.

Frontotemporal dementia is a behavioral disorder of insidious onset and variable progression. Clinically, its early features reflect frontal lobe dysfunction characterized by personality change, deterioration in memory and executive functions, and stereotypical and perseverative behaviors. Pathologically, there is degeneration of the neocortex and subcortical nuclei, without distinctive features such as plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, or Pick or Lewy bodies. Within-family variation in neuropathology and clinical phenotype is observed. In cases where family aggregation is observed, it is inhe

Suspense and surprise: on the relationship between expectancies and P3.

Few theories of the P3 component have emphasized the distinction between its parietal and frontocentral parts. This study used a new paradigm for testing the predictions that the parietal P3 is evoked by awaited stimuli (suspense) and the frontal P3 by unexpected stimuli (surprise). Subjects had to make simple responses whenever a yellow ring appeared. This signal appeared on the screen within a clock, most frequently when the pointer was at 12 o'clock (every 6 s) but sometimes also at other times. The suspense process should therefore have its minimum shortly after 12 o'clock and then steadil

The prognosis of benign localized epilepsy in early childhood.

Onset of seizures during early childhood is a not infrequent possibility in benign partial (localization-related) epilepsy (BPEC) when all these syndromes and not only benign partial epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes are considered. In patients followed up for long periods of time, temporal changes in the EEG often make impossible a distribution into discrete syndromes. The electroclinical patterns overlap and the determining factor is not the location but the morphology of the sharp waves. A complete remission is observed in all patients, with rolandic and/or extrarolandic foci. In rare pat

Whipple's disease confined to the brain: a case studied clinically and pathologically.

A 40 year old man developed seizures, intermittent fever, and progressive dementia ending in coma and death after four years. The cerebrospinal fluid showed variable pleocytosis and occasional elevation of protein. The necropsy revealed many lesions characteristic of Whipple's disease confined to the grey matter of the brain. The pathological changes were studied with the light and electron microscope. The findings permitted an understanding of the temporal sequence of changes in the lesions. Involvement of the brain in this condition is rare, but the disease is treatable and the diagnosis can

An Unusual Presentation of Nocardiosis in an Allogeneic Transplant Recipient.

Nocardiosis is a rare cause of opportunistic infection post hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) occurring in about 0.3% of patients. The risk factors include delayed immune reconstitution, prolonged neutropenia, and graft-versus-host disease. The most common site of infection is the lung, followed by the brain and the skin. Concomitant pulmonary and central nervous system (CNS) nocardiosis is an extremely rare entity as presented in our case. We present the case of a 72-year-old male at 137 days post transplant presenting with complaints of headache and slurred speech. A magnetic resonan

MR Elastography Demonstrates Increased Brain Stiffness in Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a reversible neurologic disorder characterized by a triad of cognitive impairment, gait abnormality, and urinary incontinence that is commonly treated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. However, multiple overlapping symptoms often make it difficult to differentiate normal pressure hydrocephalus from other types of dementia, and improved diagnostic techniques would help patient management. MR elastography is a novel diagnostic tool that could potentially identify patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The purpose of this stu

Diffuse occipital hypometabolism on [18 F]-FDG PET scans in patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder: prodromal dementia with Lewy bodies?

BACKGROUND: Previous longitudinal studies have revealed that specific patterns on [(18) F]-fluoro-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans in patients with amnesic mild cognitive impairment can predict Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the significance of particular patterns on [(18) F]-FDG PET scans in prodromal patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) remains unclear. METHODS: Based on the prevailing evidence that rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) often precedes the onset of DLB, [(18) F]-FDG PET scans of nine non-demented patients reporting recurr

[Surgical treatment of epilepsy: outcome of various surgical procedures in adults and children].

Surgical treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy is being performed in a growing number of adults and children. The objective of this report is to review and evaluate the published literature related to the outcome of epilepsy surgery. Surgical procedures were classified as "curative", which included temporal and extratemporal resections, as well as hemispherotomy and stereotactic radiosurgery, and as "palliative", which mainly included callosotomy and multiple subpial transections. Data obtained from the literature suggest that after temporal lobe surgery, 68 percent of the adult patients, on av

Resting-state functional connectivity in default mode and frontoparietal networks predicts directed forgetting.

Directed forgetting (DF) refers to the goal-directed modulation of memory, typically manifested as superior memory for information cued to be remembered (TBR) compared to information cued to be forgotten (TBF). Although prior studies have emphasized task-evoked neural mechanisms of DF, it remains unclear whether intrinsic brain network organization contributes to individual differences in memory control. The present study examined whether resting-state functional connectivity within and between the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN) predicts individual differences in D

Condition-and-perturb frontoparietal network disruption enhances preoperative nTMS mapping in patients with language-eloquent tumors: A proof-of-concept pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The use of preoperative neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) is becoming increasingly common in patients undergoing eloquent brain tumor surgery. Yet the optimal stimulation paradigms for language mapping still lack specificity and need to be refined. In the frontoparietal network, a protocol of dual-site TMS, termed the condition-and-perturb approach (CAP), was shown to effectively sensitize the semantic network in healthy subjects. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to evaluate the added value of the CAP to preoperative language mapping in non-aphasic patie
