Peritoneal manifestations of fascioliasis on CT images: a new observation.

PURPOSE: To describe peritoneal manifestations of fascioliasis on CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed CT images in 31 patients with fascioliasis confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (n = 24) or surgery (n = 7). Image analyses were performed to identify hepatic, biliary, and peritoneal abnormalities. RESULTS: Hepatic abnormalities were seen in 28 (90.3 %) of the 31 patients. The most common finding was caves sign, which was present in 25 (80.1 %) patients. Three patients (9.7 %) presented with biliary abnormalities exhibiting dilatation and enhancing wall thickening of th

Type VI choledochal cyst revisited.

Choledochal cysts are rare cystic dilatations of the bile ducts, which are commonly found in children. Choledochal cysts in adults are uncommon, and cystic dilatation of the cystic duct (type VI choledochal cyst) is a unique occurrence. To date, specific pathogenic and diagnostic criteria for describing type VI cysts have been lacking. This report attempts to lay down the specific diagnostic and management criteria of this uncommon entity, with reviews of all available cases reported in the literature.

Gallbladder perforation: risk factors and outcome.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder perforation is difficult to diagnose and is associated with significant morbidity. This study investigates factors affecting outcome in patients with gallbladder perforation over two decades. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1982 to 2002 data from patients undergoing cholecystectomy at one institution were prospectively collected. Patients treated for gallbladder perforation and gangrenous cholecystitis were identified and outcomes were compared. The chi(2) test, Student's t-test, and Mann-Whitney rank sum test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Two hundred eight

Gallbladder involvement of Henoch-Schönlein purpura mimicking acute acalculous cholecystitis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We report the case of a 53-year-old man with fever and severe abdominal pain following an upper respiratory tract infection. METHODS/RESULTS: The clinical signs, the laboratory markers, and the ultrasound findings were consistent with acute acalculous cholecystitis and he underwent cholecystectomy. Histologically the gallbladder showed vasculitis and the patient developed postoperatively a purpuric rash of the legs with transient ankle arthritis. Gastroscopy revealed prepyloric ulcers consistent with vasculitis. The patient was diagnosed as having Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Ga

Choledochal cyst complicated by acute cholecystitis and bypass obstruction: diagnostic role of Tc-99m-HIDA cholescintigraphy.

An unusual case of malignant degeneration of a choledochal cyst is presented. The presence of acute cholecystitis with the cystic duct originating from the cyst as well as the subsequent obstruction of the cyst-jejunal surgical anastomosis was readily detected with Tc-99m-dimethyl-iminodiacetic (Tc-99m-HIDA) cholescintigraphy.

Cryptogenic acute cholangitis--association with toxic shock syndrome.

The clinical and pathologic findings of eight cases of cryptogenic acute cholangitis are reported. Six of the patient had clinical features of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and all but one died. No patient had antecedent disease of the liver or gall bladder. Blood cultures for bacteria from six of the patients were negative. Postmortem cultures from two patients grew Staphylococcus aureus. The biliary tract was patent and the pancreas was grossly normal in every case. The major histologic finding was acute cholangitis, with minimal or no cholestasis, but changes were noted in many other organs. I

The guinea pig as a model for the asymptomatic human typhoid carrier.

Studies were designed to develop an animal model which mimics the asymptomatic carrier state of typhoid fever, Salmonella typhi infection, in man. The gallbladder of the guinea pig [Can (HA)] was surgically cannulated to provide a route for infection and bile sampling. Organisms (2 X 10(8) S typh:) were introduced by way of the cannula and samples of bile removed and analyzed periodically. Salmonella typhi was recovered from the bile and feces of infected, yet apparently normal, guinea pigs for periods of up to 5 months thus mimicking the human symptomeles carrier. Some guinea pigs were treate

High prevalence of Opisthorchis viverrini infection in reservoir hosts in four districts of Khon Kaen Province, an opisthorchiasis endemic area of Thailand.

Khon Kaen, a northeastern province of Thailand, has been considered as one of the human opisthorchiasis endemic areas with continuing high prevalence. Unsuccessful eradication of the disease is probably from the culture of eating raw and undercooked fish of local residence and the parasitic persistency in animal reservoir hosts, such as cats and dogs. In cooperation with the other human opisthorchiasis control programs in an endemic area of 29 villages in Ban Haet, Ban Phai, Chonnabot and Muncha Khiri Districts, Khon Kaen, this study investigated the prevalence of Opisthorchis viverrini infect

[MR-Cholangiopancreatography as a single-shot projection: techniques and results of 200 examinations].

PURPOSE: Evaluation of utility and value of a selective projection technique for bile and pancreatic ducts in MRI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 200 patient examinations of the pancreaticobiliary duct system using a turbo-SE pulse sequence in "single-shot" technique were evaluated in retrospect concerning anatomic display and diagnostic accuracy compared to surgery, ERCP, i.v. cholangiography, ultrasound and clinical course. RESULTS: Non-dilated ducts allowed visualisation of gallbladders in 78%, common bile ducts in 97%, cystic ducts in 80%, intrahepatic main ducts in 71% and pancreatic main ducts

A New Application of 64CuCl2 PET/CT: Imaging of Cats With Mammary Carcinoma.

Feline mammary carcinoma (FMC) is an aggressive and highly metastatic cancer that shares molecular and clinical characteristics with human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), making it a relevant comparative model for a disease lacking targeted therapies. This study investigated the feasibility and clinical utility of 64CuCl2 PET/CT imaging in cats with naturally occurring mammary carcinoma. Eight cats (seven tumour-bearing, one healthy control) were administered an intravenous dose of 64CuCl2 and underwent whole-body PET/CT imaging. Semi-quantitative analysis was performed using standardize
