Global mortality of chronic liver diseases attributable to Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus infections from 1990 to 2019 and projections to 2030.

BACKGROUND: The burden of chronic liver disease (CLD) deaths attributable to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains unknown. Further research is required to elucidate the extent of this burden in the eventual elimination of these diseases. METHODS: Data on liver cancer, cirrhosis, and other CLD among 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019 was extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) published in 2019. The Bayesian age-period-cohort model was used to analyze the temporal trend and predict the disease burden by 20

Global, Regional, and National Burdens of Stroke in Children and Adolescents From 1990 to 2019: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death among children, yet evidence on stroke incidence and prognosis in this population is largely neglected worldwide. The aim of this study was to estimate the latest burden of childhood stroke, as well as trends, risk factors, and inequalities from 1990 to 2019, at the global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease 2019 study was utilized to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, years lived with disability, years of life lost (YLLs), and average annual percentage changes in stroke among populations aged 0 to 19

Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific burden of diarrhoeal diseases, their risk factors, and aetiologies, 1990-2021, for 204 countries and territories: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk facto

Global incidence and prevalence of gastritis and duodenitis from 1990 to 2019: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastritis and duodenitis, prevalent diseases of the digestive system, impose a significant global burden. This study aimed to examine their incidence and prevalence patterns worldwide, including changes over the past 30 years. METHODS: The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) of gastritis and duodenitis, stratified by age, sex, geographical region, and sociodemographic index (SDI), were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. The dynamic trends were captured by calculating the average annual percentage changes (AAPC).

Distributions and trends in the global burden of young-onset tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer by region, age, and sex from 1990 to 2021: An age-period-cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: The young onset Tracheal, Bronchus, and Lung Cancer (TBLC) exhibits distinct gene mutations and clinical characteristics. With worsening air pollution, the incidence of young onset TBLC is increasing, resulting in significant economic burdens. The specific epidemiology of the disease burden remains elusive. METHODS: The updated Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study was employed. This study reports on the disease burden trends of young TBLC (≤54 years) and its risk factors. Data is presented as counts and age-standardized rates (ASRs) per 100,000 people across different age gro

National, regional and global mortality due to alcoholic cardiomyopathy in 2015.

OBJECTIVES: (1) A comprehensive mortality assessment of alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) and (2) examination of under-reporting using vital statistics data. METHODS: A modelling study estimated sex-specific mortality rates for each country, which were subsequently aggregated by region and globally. Input data on ACM mortality were obtained from death registries for n=91 countries. For n=99 countries, mortality estimates were predicted using aggregate alcohol data from WHO publications. Descriptive additional analyses illustrated the scope of under-reporting. RESULTS: In 2015, there were an est

Governing AI for Pharmacovigilance in Low-Income Countries: Systems Perspective.

Gaps in pharmaceutical governance could widen with the adoption of AI, even as AI promises better pharmacovigilance in low-income countries (LICs). While advanced regulatory systems like Australia's are integrating AI into pharmaceutical governance, LICs with underdeveloped regulatory capabilities, such as South Sudan, lag behind. The potential divergence disorients the World Health Organization's "Medicine Without Harm" agenda and effective global pharmacovigilance. Moreover, evolving global governance initiatives, including the newly established United Nations scientific panel on AI, may be

Treating eating disorders in the real world - MaiStep: A skill-based universal prevention for schools.

Eating disorders are difficult to treat and often associated with morbidity and mortality. Universal prevention approaches are increasingly focusing on enhancing skills, but few eating disorder programs are available for under-15-year-olds. This study aimed to develop and examine a school-based universal prevention program ('MaiStep') for adolescent boys and girls. A three-arm randomized controlled trial with baseline, post-intervention and 12-month follow-up was conducted with 1654 adolescents (M = 13.35, SD 0.76). 'MaiStep' was delivered by psychologists in the first intervention group (IG1)

Is global elimination of HCV realistic?

The elimination of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been made possible through the availability of new antiviral drugs which may now be administered to all patients with HCV infection, even those with decompensated cirrhosis. The goal of the World Health Organization (WHO) is to reduce the incidence of chronic hepatitis infection from the current 6-10 million to 0.9 million cases of chronic infections by 2030, and annual deaths from 1.4 million to fewer than 0.5 million. Achieving these targets will require full implementation of epidemiological knowledge of HCV infection, screening and testing pra

Conceptualising quality of life outcomes for women participating in testing for sexually transmitted infections: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative research.

Many public health interventions have aims which are broader than health alone; this means that there are difficulties in using outcome measures that capture health effects only, such as Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs). Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are a major public health concern both in the UK and globally, with Chlamydia trachomatis being the most common bacterial STI worldwide. There is scope for the wider use of qualitative syntheses in health-related research; in this study we highlight their potential value in informing outcome identification, particularly for public heal

Viral hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. According to World Health Organization data, 3% of the world population (approximately 170 million people) is infected with HCV; in Poland there are over 700,000. Over 70% of those infected manifest no symptoms in the acute phase of the disease, and in about 70-80% the acute phase progresses into a chronic form. Patients with symptoms in the acute phase of HCV infection most commonly present with unspecific signs and symptoms that may develop in other viral liver infections, e.g. malaise, fatigue, abdominal pain, mild hepato- and

A social network analysis of the organizations focusing on tuberculosis, malaria and pneumonia.

In this paper,we present an original study on the use of social media data to analyze the structure of the global health networks (GHNs) relative to health organizations targeted to malaria, tuberculosis (TBC) and pneumonia as well as twitter popularity, evaluating the performance of their strategies in response to the arising health threats. We use a machine learning ensemble classifier and social network analysis to discover the Twitter users that represent organizations or groups active for each disease. We have found evidence that the GHN of TBC is the more mature, active and global. Meanw…
