Hairs are produced in hair follicles that have a cyclic activity. The cycles that normal hair follicles go through are the metabolically active anagen phase, the catagen transitional phase and the resting telogen phase. Loss of more than 120 hairs daily is called alopecia. Drugs typically cause a diffuse, reversible alopecia by influencing one of the cycles that hair follicles go through. Because hair loss can have many causes, a causal relationship between a suspected drug and hair loss may be hard to prove. The principal categories of drugs that may cause alopecia listed in the literature ar…

Trichoscopy performed with a handheld dermoscope or a videodermoscope became an indispensable tool in differential diagnosis of hair and scalp diseases. Current research is focusing on trichoscopy of: 1) non-cicatricial alopecia, 2) cicatricial alopecia, 3) hair shaft disorders, and 4) inflammatory scalp diseases. This review summarizes current knowledge in these four fields of research. In all non-cicatricial alopecias presence of empty follicular openings is a common trichoscopy finding. In alopecia areata black dots and micro-exclamation mark hairs and tapered hairs correlate with disease a…

Loose anagen syndrome (LAS) is a hair disorder involving insufficient anchoring of the hair follicle to the scalp owing to an autosomal dominant or sporadic mutation in the gene encoding keratin 6. There are three phenotypes of LAS, including type B, which presents in young, light-haired girls as unruly, uncombable hair with diminished growth. We present a 2-year-old girl with LAS type B whose identical twin sister was unaffected. The diagnosis was confirmed with a painless hair pull test proven to contain anagen hairs with ruffled cuticles on trichoscopy, preventing the need for unnecessary r…

INTRODUCTION: Trichoteiromania is a friction-induced hair shaft disorder caused by repetitive rubbing/scratching and is often considered the hair shaft expression of lichen simplex chronicus ("scratching-pseudo-alopecia"). It is classically described on the scalp and presents with lichenified plaques and characteristic trichoscopy such as broom hairs and V-hairs. Pruritus or an urge to rub is common and may help distinguish it from trichotillomania (hair pulling), which is often asymptomatic. To date, the condition has been described almost exclusively as a scalp disorder.

An electroepilation apparatus equipped with a metal tweezer was studied with reference to possible permanent removal of facial hair in women with cosmetically embarrassing hypertrichosis. 8 women were epilated on a fixed area of 1 cm2 and counts of the epilated hairs were done. 5-7 months later, the same area was epilated and the terminal hairs counted. No significant difference in the hair counts was found on the two epilations. The method must be considered inapplicable for permanent removal of superfluous hair.

The response properties of hair cells and nerve fibers in the alligator lizard cochlea are frequency selective and tonotopically organized with longitudinal position in the organ. The lengths of the hair-cell hair bundles also vary monotonically with longitudinal position. In this study, quantitative measurements were made of the motion of individual hair bundles in an excised preparation of the cochlea stimulated at auditory frequencies. The angular displacement of hair bundles is frequency selective and tonotopically organized, demonstrating the existence of a micromechanical tuning mechanis…

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of autoimmune nonscarring hair loss of scalp and/or body. Atypical hair regrowth in AA is considered a rare phenomenon. It includes atypical pattern of hair growth (sudden graying, perinevoid alopecia, Renbok phenomenon, castling phenomenon, and concentric or targetoid regrowth) and atypical dark color hair regrowth. We report a case of AA that resulted in a concentric targetoid hair regrowth and discuss the possible related theories regarding the significance of this phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata-like hair loss may occur in the context of cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) and can very rarely evolve to alopecia universalis-like presentation. The dermoscopic findings of CTCL-related alopecia have not been described.
METHODS: Two patients with alopecia areata universalis-like hair loss occurring in the context of preexisting, pathology-proven CTCL are presented.
RESULTS: Clinical examination showed subtotal scalp alopecia with sparse fine hair or total scalp alopecia with loss of eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair. On dermoscopy there was follicular or diffuse …

A healthy 10-year-old girl was referred for evaluation of patchy hair loss on the scalp of longer than 6 months duration. She had been diagnosed and treated for head lice approximately 1 month before onset of the hair loss. Examination of the scalp showed discrete ovoid patches of hair loss at the vertex scalp. A scrape of the area of hair loss was performed, and a nit was visible on microscopic examination. Focal hair loss may represent an atypical manifestation of ongoing pediculosis capitis.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder characterized by transient, non-scarring hair loss and preservation of the hair follicle. Hair loss can take many forms ranging from loss in well-defined patches to diffuse or total hair loss, which can affect all hair-bearing sites. Patchy alopecia areata affecting the scalp is the most common type. Alopecia areata affects nearly 2% of the general population at some point during their lifetime. Skin biopsies of affected skin show a lymphocytic infiltrate in and around the bulb or the lower part of the hair follicle in the anagen (hair growth) phase. A…

As sensory cells, hair cells within the mammalian inner ear convert sounds into receptor potentials when their projecting stereocilia are deflected. The organ of Corti of the cochlea contains two types of hair cell, inner and outer hair cells, which differ in function. It has been appreciated for over two decades that although inner hair cells act as the primary receptor cell for the auditory system, the outer hair cells can also act as motor cells. Outer hair cells respond to variation in potential, and change length at rates unequalled by other motile cells. The forces generated by outer hai…

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a progressive hair loss disease that occurs with the effect of androgens and genetic predisposition. Hair thinning and hair loss affect people's self-confidence and self-image more than is thought. In these patients, platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment is used in addition to the limited medical treatments available. However, there is a lack of standardization for the application method of PRP treatment in the literature. The number of studies in which objective data and hair analysis parameters were revealed to demonstrate the effectiveness of PRP treatment is a…

BACKGROUND: Hair loss is a common dermatological condition including various types such as alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, etc. Minoxidil is a topical medication used for treating hair loss, which is effective for various types of alopecia. However, minoxidil has limitations in treating hair loss, such as slow onset of action and low efficacy, and it cannot effectively inhibit one of the major pathogenic factors of hair loss - excessive oxidative stress.
METHODS: Transition metal elements with rapid electron transfer, such as molybdenum, have been extensively studied and applied for i…

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) may negatively impact patient quality of life (QoL), disease perception, and work productivity. AA severity is not solely based on scalp hair loss; individuals with AA can experience psychosocial burdens, including emotional symptoms and activity limitations (ES/AL). Our objective was to identify discrete AA severity profiles and evaluate the association with patient-reported outcomes (PROs).
METHODS: Dermatologist and patient surveys from the Alopecia Areata Disease Specific Programme in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom were analyzed. P…

The pattern of hair growth, morphology of the hair shafts, and the hair root state are described in four girls and two boys with prepubertal hypertrichosis. The exact nosology of this form of excessive hair growth is discussed in relation to hirsuties and the possibility of it representing an 'atavistic' trait.

To investigate how insect hair morphology influences pollination effectiveness, this study examined four common wild pollinators in Camellia oleifera plantations: two bee species (Colletes gigas and Apis cerana) and two hornet species (Vespa velutina and Vespa soror). We systematically measured hair length, hair density, and pollen loads on four body regions (head, thorax, abdomen, and legs). The results indicated that the following: (1) C. gigas possessed significantly longer and denser hairs across all body parts, especially on the legs, compared to the other three species. (2) Both the poll…

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most prevalent form of hair loss worldwide. Growth factors have been used to treat hair loss, but their intradermal delivery remains challenging. Type XVII collagen (COL17) has been reported to regulate the aging process of hair follicles (HFs). We reason that combining the therapeutic efficacy of growth factors and collagen biomaterials will provide maximal hair regeneration. Here, we design a microenvironment-responsive recombinant human COL17 microneedle (MRrhCOL17 MN) system for the transdermal delivery of the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) to stimu…
