Topics, Skills, and Cases for an Undergraduate Musculoskeletal Curriculum in Southern Africa: A Consensus from Local and International Experts.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with orthopaedic pathology in low to middle-income countries are treated by nonspecialists. A curriculum to prepare undergraduate medical students for this duty should reflect the local pathology and skills that are required to manage patients in a resource-restricted environment. The aim of this study was to establish and prioritize a list of core orthopaedic-related knowledge topics, clinical cases, and skills that are relevant to medical students in southern Africa and areas with a similar clinical context. METHODS: A modified Delphi consensus study was conducted

The hospitalist perspective on opioid prescribing: A qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a frequent symptom among patients in the hospital. Pain management is a key quality indicator for hospitals, and hospitalists are encouraged to frequently assess and treat pain. Optimal opioid prescribing, described as safe, patient-centered, and informed opioid prescribing, may be at odds with the priorities of current hospital care, which focuses on patient-reported pain control rather than the potential long-term consequences of opioid use. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to understand physicians' attitudes, beliefs, and practices toward opioid prescribing during hospitalization an

Male versus female genital alteration: differences in legal, medical, and socioethical responses.

The different legal, social, and medical approaches to ritually based male and female genital circumcision in the United States are highlighted in this article. The religious and historical origins of these practices are briefly examined, as well as the effect of changing policy statements by American medical associations on the number of circumcisions performed. Currently, no state or federal laws single out male circumcision for regulation. The tolerant attitudes toward male circumcision in law, medicine, and societal opinion stand in striking contrast to the attitudes of those disciplines t
