Blood lead level and blood pressure of bus drivers in Bangkok, Thailand.

This study aims to evaluate blood lead level (PbB) and blood pressure of bus drivers in Bangkok, Thailand, after the phasing out of lead in gasoline. The subjects comprised of 439 male bus drivers whose age ranged between 23 and 59 yr with the mean age of 42 +/- 8 yr. Average working experience was 10 +/- 7 yr. The mean of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 131 +/- 17 and 81 +/- 11 mmHg, respectively. PbB ranged from 2.5 to 16.2 microg/dl with the mean PbB of 6.3 microg/dl. Prevalence rate of systolic and diastolic hypertension among bus drivers were 23.0% and 18.2%, respectively.

A relationship between US healthcare worker smallpox vaccination rates in 2003 and presidential election results in 2004.

A statistical relationship exists between state per capita smallpox vaccination rates of healthcare workers in 2003 and state presidential election results in 2004. The potential implications of political influence on national biosecurity decision making are discussed.

Understanding the new context of the male sex work industry.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent cause of accidental household death in children under 6 years of age is inhalation of a foreign body. Delayed management is blamed for death. The absence of a recognizable penetration syndrome complicates and delays not only the diagnosis but also the treatment of foreign body inhalation. OBJECTIVE: This report aimed to highlight the problem of radiopaque foreign body inhalation and analyze part of our experience in the treatment of such cases. METHODS: A multicenter experience in the management of radiopaque inhaled foreign bodies in 3 centers in Egypt and Saud

Occupational deaths among healthcare workers.

Recent experiences with severe acute respiratory syndrome and the US smallpox vaccination program have demonstrated the vulnerability of healthcare workers to occupationally acquired infectious diseases. However, despite acknowledgment of risk, the occupational death rate for healthcare workers is unknown. In contrast, the death rate for other professions with occupational risk, such as police officer or firefighter, has been well defined. With available information from federal sources and calculating the additional number of deaths from infection by using data on prevalence and natural histo

Bioterrorism and its aftermath: dealing individually and organizationally with the emotional reactions to an anthrax attack.

From September 2001 through April 2004, the United States Postal Service (USPS) dealt, for the first time, with bioterrorism resulting in employee deaths and the closure of a large mail processing plant in Washington, D.C. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) partnered with the USPS throughout this tumultuous time to meet the multiple and evolving behavioral health needs of the employees and facilitate the employees' emotional preparedness for their return to work at the closed facility. This paper discusses the reactions manifested by the employees during this extended period, as well as the

Generic task-related occupational requirements for Royal Naval personnel.

Physical tests and selection criteria have historically been used by many military organizations. However, the standards associated with them have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. This paper describes a series of experiments that were conducted to establish task-related occupational tests and standards (TBTs) for Royal Naval (RN) personnel. A total of 172 (106 male and 66 female) RN personnel volunteered for these experiments, which were designed to: identify the anthropometric requirements for operating various safety hatches and doors on board a RN Frigate (TBT1); quantify the

Genetic information privacy and discrimination.

As rapidly evolving technologies provide more information about disease-related genes in human DNA, there is an increase in genetic screening for predisposition for a variety of diseases. Knowledge of genetic information provides significant benefits and drawbacks. Potential misuse of genetic information, particularly by employers or insurance companies, is a realistic possibility. Genetic information is often attainable via electronic medical information databases, heightening concerns that these data will be accessed by third parties and used for discriminatory purposes. Many lawmakers belie

Preoptometry and optometry school grade point average and optometry admissions test scores as predictors of performance on the national board of examiners in optometry part I (basic science) examination.

PURPOSE: To evaluate preoptometry and optometry school grade point averages and Optometry Admission Test (OAT) scores as predictors of performance on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry NBEO Part I (Basic Science) (NBEOPI) examination. METHODS: Simple and multiple correlation coefficients were computed from data obtained from a sample of three consecutive classes of optometry students (1995-1997; n = 278) at Southern California College of Optometry. RESULTS: The GPA after year two of optometry school was the highest correlation (r = 0.75) among all predictor variables; the average o

[Validity of urinary glucose test for diabetes screening in workplace regular medical checkups].

It has been acknowledged that urinary glucose level varies depending on the time after meal which may hence affect validity of urinary glucose test as a screening test for diabetes. However, sample collection time has not been standardized for urinary glucose test in workplace regular medical checkups. In this study, we investigated the effect of timing of urine sampling on results of urinary glucose screening tests, and using data obtained from the 75 g oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) evaluated the validity of urinary glucose test in workplace medical checkups. Also, we made a survey amon

Criteria for the reintegration in the workforce of workers with musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs, based on preliminary practical experience.

This paper presents a preliminary study on the return to the workforce of employees with WMSDs of the upper limbs, and their reallocation to jobs with 'low exposure'. The study, which is still underway, involves a large engineering firm and includes some 100 workers affected by WMSDs. The trial involved: providing a definition of the criteria for characterizing 'accommodating' jobs (i.e. frequency of action < 20 actions/min; virtual absence of other risk factors such as force, awkward posture, inadequate pauses, etc.); effectively identifying jobs meeting such criteria (or jobs which, with min

Chromosomal aberrations in medical staff occupationally exposed to X-rays: a follow-up study.

The decrease of unstable chromosomal damages (dicentrics, rings and acentric fragments) was observed in circulating peripheral blood lymphocytes after exposure to ionizing radiation. The study comprised 100 subjects, all medical staff occupationally exposed to X-rays, who were re-examined for unstable chromosomal aberrations after 3 months (12 subjects), 6 months (31 subjects), 9 months (13 subjects), 12 months (21 subjects), over 24 months (14 subjects), and over 36 months (9 subjects) controls were 60 subjects who were not exposed to ionizing radiation or chemical mutagens at their workplace

Development and evaluation of an observational method for assessing repetition in hand tasks.

Several physical stressors, including repetitive, sustained, and forceful exertions, awkward postures, localized mechanical stress, highly dynamic movements, exposures to low temperatures, and vibration have been linked to increased risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Repetitive exertions have been among the most widely studied of these stressors, but there is no single metric for assessing exposure to repetitive work. A new methodology enables repetitive hand activity to be rated based on observable characteristics of manual work. This method uses a series of 10-cm visual-analog s
