BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Loco-regional radiotherapy of left-sided breast cancer represents a treatment planning challenge when the internal mammary chain (IMC) lymph nodes are included in the target volume. Therapeutic patient education has been developed over more than 30 years, to better treat chronic patients. Myxomas are common cardiac tumors that are traditionally managed by complete excision through a median sternotomy approach with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. We discuss a patient with left atrial myxoma and chronic atrial fibrillation who underwent surgical excision and combined irrigated radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation through a Port Access approach. We document the occurrence of a solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) in a cardiac transplant patient. From 1964 to 1989, we performed operations on 133 patients with cardiac tumors. There were 58 male and 75 female patients ranging in age from three days to 81 years; 101 were adults, and 32 were children (less than 12 years of age). Primary tumors (102 benign and 12 malignant) were found in 114 patients and metastatic tumors in 19. Symptoms included congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, emboli, and chest pain. Ten cases of serious infection due to antibiotic-resistant Corynebacterium JK are reported. Five infections occurred in patients with hematologic malignancy and granulocytopenia, an association previously reported. This report reviews morphologic aspects of pericardial heart disease. A morphologic classification for this condition is presented. An ideal classification of pericardial heart disease obviously would take into account clinical, etiologic and morphologic features of this condition but a single classification combining these 3 components is lacking.
