Although mycotoxicoses attract more and more attention, the epidemiology of these diseases is still not adequately studied. The author devot … ed in the mid-thirties, in the Ukraine, the research workers headed by V. G. DROBOTKO, noticed that horses belonging to the Army remained unaffected while in the same localities those belonging to the collective farms were stricken by this "unknown disease". This epidemiological phenomenon suggested the hypothesis that the unknown diseases must be due to …

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibromas are uncommon in horses and complete surgical excision with premaxillectomy, maxillectomy or mandibulectomy is recommended. Piezosurgery has been previously used in equines only in one study.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of ossifying fibroma treated with piezosurgery and to describe its follow-up.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case report.
METHODS: A 4-year-old Zangersheide gelding was presented for a mass occupying the space of tooth 202. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of ossifying fibroma, which was removed by resection of soft tissues and a slice of the premaxill…

This case report describes the use of computed tomography for the diagnosis and surgical planning in a horse with bilateral nephrolithiasis. An adult Warmblood stallion (460 kg) was presented with chronic weight loss, hypercalcemia and azotemia. Ultrasonographic examination identified hyperechoic masses in both kidneys and dilation of the right renal pelvis. A solid mass was evident upon transrectal examination on the left side. Computed tomography (CT) of the caudal abdomen was performed and provided good quality images that facilitated exact determination of the size, position and extent of

Aberrant nematode larval migration in the CNS of horses is rare but frequently fatal; one of the main etiological agents involved in this illness is Halicephalobus gingivalis. This soil nematode has been associated with several fatal equine meningoencephalitis reports worldwide; however, it had never been diagnosed in horses of Mexico. A 10 year-old Andalusian horse presented dysphagia, fever, weakness, prostration and ataxia; the patient expired during the medical attention. Post mortem examination was performed and no gross alterations were found. Histopathology revealed meningoencephalitis,…

Mesothelioma is a rare malignancy in horses. This report describes a case in which marked hemoperitoneum, moderate anemia, and moderate dependent edema were the presenting clinical signs in a 2-year-old Standardbred stallion with mesothelioma of the vaginal tunic. On necropsy, approximately 40 L of dark red fluid distended the abdomen. A dark red mass infiltrated and effaced the right pampiniform plexus, and red nodular masses were present multifocally on the parietal and visceral peritoneal surfaces. Histopathologically, the masses were composed of malignant spindle cells with a sarcomatoid a…

The results of ELISA, SDS-PAGE and western blotting indicated that the protoscolex antigens of Echinococcus granulosus (of 10-125 kDa) included antigens recognized by sera from human cases of cystic echinococcosis (CE). Some of the latter antigens (of approximately 79, 59, 45, 38, 31 and 29 kDa) exhibited cross-reactivity with sera from humans with other parasitic infections, including alveolar echinococcosis, cysticercosis and African trypanosomiasis. The 31-kDa antigen recognized by IgG antibodies in human CE sera only appeared to be present in the extracts of protoscoleces from sheep, and n

PVR is a complication of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment which can occur only in predisposed eyes. Preoperative PVR and postoperative PVR can develop solely in retinal detachments associated with retinal breaks related to vitreous traction (horse-shoe tears, operculated tears, crescent tears and paravascular tears of the postequatorial region). PVR never develops in retinal detachments due to retinogenic retinal breaks (atrophic holes in lattice, and oral dialysis). There are 3 independent risk factors for postoperative PVR whose role has been demonstrated: preoperative PVR, horse-shoe tears

With the continued increase in the number of wildlife rabies cases reported across the United States and Canada, this disease will remain a … test; therefore, the diagnosis of rabies can be definitively made only at necropsy. Vaccination of horses with the inactivated rabies vaccines is thought to be safe and effective and may be advised for horses in endemic areas. Practitioners should consult with state or provincial authorities regarding the need for vaccination in their area. Veterinary t …

INTRODUCTION: Racehorse and jockey incidents on race-days frequently occur together, yet risk factors for their occurrence have historically been investigated separately. Consideration of both horses and humans in tandem is required for a One Health approach to risk reduction. Our objectives were to therefore identify modifiable risk factors for adverse outcomes that are common or conflicting to both horses and their jockeys in Thoroughbred racing.
METHODS: Australian Single National System records for the 2004/05 to 2018/19 flat racing season were merged with the corresponding Australian Rac…

BACKGROUND: Formalin intoxication via the gastrointestinal route has not been previously reported in the horse. Whereas ingestion of formalin in humans, although rare, is well documented. Majority of human cases are either accidental, suicidal or homicidal and often lead to fatality, with a reported lethal formaldehyde dose equating to 0.12 - 0.16 g/kg bwt.
OBJECTIVES: To describe a single case report of the clinical management of an adult horse referred to a veterinary teaching hospital following accidental administration of 10% formalin via nasogastric tube.
METHODS: A 13-year-old Thorough

The bacterium Clostridium (C.) tetani is an ubiquitous pathogen. This anaerobic, gram-positive bacterium can form spores and can be found in the whole environment. It enters the body via injuries of the skin and wounds where it releases the neurotoxin "tetanospasmin" (= tetanus toxin). The animals most susceptible to tetanus infection are horses and sheep. Only active immunisation by tetanus vaccine provides effective protection against tetanus intoxication. The marketing authorisation requirements stipulate that efficacy of tetanus vaccines ad us. vet. must be demonstrated in all target anima…

BACKGROUND: Superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendinopathy is one of the most common musculoskeletal diseases in Thoroughbreds and a major cause of retirement from racing among racehorses in South Korea. However, there are no previous epidemiological studies on SDF tendinopathy-related risk factors for racehorses in South Korea. The interventions derived from such a study could reduce the occurrence of SDF tendinopathy and, therefore, extend horses' racing careers.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the risk factors associated with SDF tendinopathy for Thoroughbreds in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful disorder primarily affecting the incisor teeth of horses over 15 years of age. Clinical signs of the disease include prehension problems, halitosis and in severe cases weight loss. The disease predominately affects the reserve crown and presents as a loss of dental tissue and excessive build-up of cementum.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the radiographic scores of horses with EOTRH and age-matched controls and to increase understanding of EOTRH using microCT to compare teeth from horses with EOTRH and age-mat…

BACKGROUND: Equine exercise-associated myopathies are prevalent, clinically heterogeneous, generally idiopathic disorders characterised by episodes of myofibre damage that occur in association with exercise. Episodes are intermittent and vary within and between affected horses and across breeds. The aetiopathogenesis is often unclear; there might be multiple causes. Poor phenotypic characterisation hinders genetic and other disease analyses.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterise phenotypic patterns across exercise-associated myopathies in horses.
