Effects of neuromodulation on cognitive performance in individuals exhibiting addictive behaviors: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in non-invasive brain stimulation techniques as treatments for addictive disorders. While multiple reviews have examined the effects of neuromodulation on craving and consumption, there has been no review of how neuromodulation affects cognitive functioning in addiction. This systematic review examined studies of the cognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in individuals exhibiting addictive behavior. METHODS: Articles were identified through searches in PubMed and PsycINFO conducted

Reduced neural sensitivity to rapid individual face discrimination in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction. Although difficulties at processing social signals from the face in ASD have been observed and emphasized for many years, there is a lot of inconsistency across both behavioral and neural studies. METHODS: We recorded scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in 23 8-to-12 year old boys with ASD and 23 matched typically developing boys using a fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) paradigm, providing objective (i.e., frequency-tagged), fast (i.e., few minutes) and h

Food cue-induced craving in individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge-eating disorder (BED) experience more frequent and intense food cravings than individuals without binge eating. However, it is currently unclear whether they also show larger food cue-induced increases in craving (i.e., food cue reactivity) than those without binge eating, as suggested by conditioning theories of binge eating. A group of individuals with BN or BED (binge-eating group, n = 27) and a group of individuals with low trait food craving scores and without binge eating (control group, n = 19) reported their current food craving before and

Imagery rescripting in individuals with binge-eating behavior: An experimental proof-of-concept study.

OBJECTIVE: Mental imagery is more strongly related to emotions than verbal cognitions. Binge eating is associated with dysfunctional emotional regulation. However, cognitive therapy techniques have focused on verbal cognitions. This proof-of-concept study compares a traditional cognitive therapy technique, cognitive restructuring (CR), with imagery rescripting (IR) in individuals with binge-eating disorder or bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Thirty-six participants were asked to recall an idiosyncratic mental image of social rejection. They were then randomly assigned to a single session of CR or IR.

Environmental enrichment intervention for Rett syndrome: an individually randomised stepped wedge trial.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is caused by a pathogenic mutation in the MECP2 gene with major consequences for motor and cognitive development. One of the effects of impaired MECP2 function is reduced production of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein required for normal neuronal development. When housed in an enriched environment, MECP2 null mice improved motor abilities and increased levels of BDNF in the brain. We investigated the effects of environmental enrichment on gross motor skills and blood BDNF levels in girls with Rett syndrome. METHODS: A genetically variable group of

Detection of immune complexes and evaluation of alcoholic individuals' serological profile in the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is a human parasitosis that is considered a public health problem. Early diagnosis of this infection is extremely important in immunocompromised patients (i.e. subjects with alcoholism). This study aimed to evaluate anti-Strongyloides immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin A (IgA), assess levels of circulating immune complexes (IC) and determine IgG avidity in serum samples from alcoholic and nonalcoholic individuals. A total of 140 blood samples were collected from male individuals (70 alcoholic and 70 nonalcoholic subjects). Serum was obtained and analysed by enzyme-linke

Gender-Affirming Hormone Use in Transgender Individuals: Impact on Behavioral Health and Cognition.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With increasing numbers of transgender and gender non-binary individuals presenting for care, knowing how to elucidate the mental health and cognitive outcomes of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is necessary. This article reviews the present literature covering GAHT effects on mood, behavioral health, and cognition in these individuals and offers research priorities to address knowledge gaps. RECENT FINDINGS: Although there are some conflicting data, GAHT overwhelmingly seems to have positive psychological effects in both adolescents and adults. Research tends to su

Origin and Spread of HIV-1 Subtype B Among Heterosexual Individuals in Bulgaria.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was originally introduced in Bulgaria through heterosexual transmission (HET) and later transferred to other vulnerable groups along with numerous more recent introductions from outside Bulgaria. To define the diversity, origins, and dynamics of the HIV-1 subtypes prevalent in HET population in Bulgaria, we applied phylogenetic and phylodynamic analyses using polymerase (pol) sequences from HET individuals to infer the spatiotemporal evolutionary history of the HIV-1 epidemic in this population in Bulgaria. High genetic diversity was found, including 13 diffe

Altered cortical functional network during behavioral inhibition in individuals with childhood trauma.

Individuals who have prior history of childhood traumatic experiences are at a high risk for a variety of psychological and behavioral problems throughout their lifetime. This study aimed to investigate whether such individuals exhibit altered cortical functional networks during a behavioral inhibition task. One hundred fifty-three non-clinical individuals were recruited and instructed to perform a Go/NoGo task during an electroencephalograph. Source-level weighted functional networks based on the graph theory were analyzed for NoGo-P3 processing. Based on their total scores on the childhood t

Effects of exenatide and liraglutide on postchallenge glucose disposal in individuals with normal glucose tolerance.

PURPOSE: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are categorized as short- or long-acting types, but information regarding differences in the effects of these two types on postprandial glucose disposal has been limited. We have now investigated the effects of exenatide and liraglutide (short- and long-acting GLP-1RAs, respectively) on glucose disposal during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). METHODS: Fourteen healthy volunteers with normal glucose tolerance underwent three OGTTs, which were performed without pharmacological intervention or after a single administration of ex

Individual and Group-Based Engagement in an Online Physical Activity Monitoring Program in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rising prevalence of obesity in the United States, innovative methods are needed to increase physical activity (PA) in community settings. Evidence suggests that individuals are more likely to engage in PA if they are given a choice of activities and have support from others (for encouragement, motivation, and accountability). The objective of this study was to describe the use of the online Walk Georgia PA tracking platform according to whether the user was an individual user or group user. METHODS: Walk Georgia is a free, interactive online tracking platform that ena

Individualized Tacrolimus Therapy for Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome: Considerations for Ontogeny and Pharmacogenetics of CYP3A.

Tacrolimus is used initially as an immunosuppressant drug in solid organ transplant population. This calcineurin inhibitor has also been recommended by KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for Glomerulonephritis for the treatment of nephrotic syndrome in children and adults. Tacrolimus is characterized by a narrow therapeutic index and large pharmacokinetic (PK) variations. Therefore, routine Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is critical to keep tacrolimus blood levels within the therapeutic range. Tacrolimus is mainly metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes 3A5 and 3A4. Actually, for pediat

Natural history and genotype-phenotype correlations in 72 individuals with SATB2-associated syndrome.

SATB2-associated syndrome (SAS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by significant neurodevelopmental disabilities with limited to absent speech, behavioral issues, and craniofacial anomalies. Previous studies have largely been restricted to case reports and small series without in-depth phenotypic characterization or genotype-phenotype correlations. Seventy two study participants were identified as part of the SAS clinical registry. Individuals with a molecularly confirmed diagnosis of SAS were referred after clinical diagnostic testing. In this series we present the most comprehe

Longitudinal Follow-up of Individuals With Cleft Lip Using Three-Dimensional Stereophotogrammetry.

The usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry for treating cleft lip (CL) has been well documented. However, there are only a few reliable anthropometric analyses in infants with CL because at this age they cannot assume a resting facial position. Since 2014, we have used a handheld 3D imaging system in the operating room to obtain optimal images of infants with CL and palate under general anesthesia. Currently, 168 infants with a unilateral cleft, 50 infants with bilateral clefts, and 47 infants with an isolated cleft palate are being followed up in this way for a maximum of 3
