Staphylococcus aureus is a known cause of a variety of illnesses that present to the emergency department, including skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and sepsis. Managing these conditions has become more difficult with the emergence of bacterial strains in the community that are resistant to traditional first-line antibiotics. Emergency care providers need to be aware of the increased prevalence of these resistant bacteria, to understand the characteristics of the infections with which they are associated, and to know the effective antibiotic options for treating these bacterial inf

BACKGROUND: Postoperative infection is a serious problem in New Zealand and internationally with considerable human and financial costs. Also, in New Zealand, certain factors that contribute to postoperative infection are more common in Māori and Pacific populations. To date, most efforts to reduce postoperative infection have focussed on surgical aspects of care and on antibiotic prophylaxis, but recent research shows that anaesthesia providers may also have an impact on infection transmission. These providers sometimes exhibit imperfect hand hygiene and frequently transfer the blood or saliv

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus belonging to the family Enterobacteriacea. Infections caused by S marce … tors were identified, and a rapid identification of the organism was made. Heightened surveillance, infection control measures, and empiric therapy led to improved methods for handling urine jugs, which terminated the outbreak.

Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr) are at increased risk of both becoming colonized and infected with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) owing to diverse host, environment and exposure factors. Despite significant advances in surgical techniques, management of immunosuppression, and the application of antimicrobial prophylaxis and infection control practices, the burden of these infections remains high and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and adverse graft outcomes. The present review aims to highlight the current state of epidemiology, risk factors, antibiotic and n…

Strongyloides stercoralis is an important soil-transmitted helminth occurring world-wide and affecting 30-100 million people. Because many cases are asymptomatic and sensitive diagnostic methods are lacking, S. stercoralis infection is frequently underdiagnosed. The increasing incidence of autoimmune and wasting diseases and increased use of immunosuppressive agents, as well as the increased use of immunosuppressants and cytotoxic drugs, have increased S. stercoralis infection and their mortality. This review provides information about S. stercoralis epidemiology, life cycle, aetiology, pathol

In vitro studies have demonstrated that GM-CSF in combination with other stimulatory factors induces a microbicidal response that control T. gondii infection. We assessed whether GM-CSF alone can control T. gondii replication in murine microglial cultures. Microglia were collected and cultured with or without GM-CSF and the half of each group was infected with T. gondii. We determined the T. gondii infectivity, cytokines levels, NO and superoxide detection. GM-CSF alone primes microglia, which after infection induces the production of TNF-α and IL-6, leading to NO and superoxide production, wi

No doubt, double and triple infections are not uncommon features in some of the developing countries. In this paper, the effect of leishmanial infantum and schistosomal mansoni infection on the heart and lung of hamsters promoted many changes not seen in positive control with either parasite alone. Of these important changes, were the presence of leishmanial cardiac granulomas and earlier pulmonary granulomas in the lung were more or less the same as in positive schistosomal control. No doubt, with pulmonary schistosomiasis mansoni dangerous disease. Moreover, additional infection with pulmona

The infection of guinea pigs with Ascaris suum larvae resulted in decrease of the activities of trypsin and alpha-amylase, and in increase of lipase activity in extracts from their pancreas. The activity of alpha-amylase, lipase and the relative weight of lungs of infected animals which were given vitamin A, did not differ from control animals. The activity of trypsin from pancreas these animals was higher than that measured in only infected guinea pigs but it was lower than in control animals. Application of vitamin B2 and the infection of guinea pigs with A. suum did not lead to the synonymo

The objective of this study was to assess whether bacterial infection stimulates oxygen consumption and brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity. Guinea pigs infected with Legionella pneumophila showed marked fever and a significant (33%) increase in resting oxygen consumption (VO2), 24h after infection. At this time, food intake and body weight were normal and the in vitro thermogenic activity of BAT taken from infected animals was elevated by 64% above that of control guinea pigs. VO2 and BAT activity fell to control values by 48h as infected animals became moribund and over this period food inta

Two hundred patients undergoing prostatic surgery at 2 hospitals were randomly allocated into 4 equal groups. The groups were a control, cephalexin, co-trimoxazole and carfecillin treated groups. The incidence of urinary tract infections and other complications of prostatic surgery were studied in each group after a short-term prophylactic regime of 3 doses of the antibiotic. The incidence of urinary infection was significantly improved from 28% in the control group to 8% and 16% in the co-trimoxazole and cephalexin groups respectively. Carfecillin was not effective in reducing urinary infecti

This study evaluated and enhanced infection control practices in ophthalmology clinics at Magrabi Hospital, Riyadh, through a two-cycle quality improvement project (QIP). In the first cycle, a structured questionnaire assessed staff awareness, training, and implementation of infection prevention protocols, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, instrument disinfection, and environmental cleaning. Based on the identified gaps, targeted interventions, such as revised guidelines and online training, were introduced. The second cycle used a follow-up survey to reassess co…

During the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Wuhan, the gastroenterology department of our hospital performed gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures using strict infection control measures. Thorough screening of incoming patients, separation of diagnostic and treatment areas, regional management, hierarchical protection, disinfection protocols, and other measures were enforced to prevent virus transmission during endoscopic treatments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, between February and March 2020, 159 endoscopic examinations and treatments were performed, including emergen…

Hepatitis B is caused by the host immune response and T cells play a major role in the immunopathogenesis. More importantly, T cells not only destroy hepatocytes infected by hepatitis B virus (HBV), but also control HBV replication or eradicate HBV in a noncytolytic manner. Therefore, analysis of T cell immune response during acute and chronic HBV infection is important to develop a strategy for successful viral control, which could lead to immunotherapy for terminating persistent HBV infection. There have been many attempts at immunotherapy for chronic HBV infection, and some have shown promi

Toxoplasma gondii has a very wide intermediate host range and is thought to be able to infect all warm blooded animals. The parasite causes a spectrum of different diseases and clinical symptoms within the intermediate hosts and following infection most animals develop adaptive humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. The development of protective immunity to T. gondii following natural infection in many host species has led researchers to look at vaccination as a strategy to control disease, parasite multiplication and establishment in animal hosts. A range of different veterinary vaccines

Tuberculosis is a serious disease for world health and there has been an increase in the number of cases in recent years. Children are the most vulnerable to infection, with a greater risk of developing the disease and with a greater frequency of its serious forms. In spite of that, it is exceptional for them to develop bacilliferous TB, with its treatment not playing a great role in the epidemiological control of the disease. However, the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in children avoids development of the disease and the study of familial contacts can help the diagnosis, treatmen

Interferon (IFN)-gamma, in both natural endogenous form and administered as exogenous protein, induces control over visceral Leishmania donovani in experimentally infected BALB/c mice. To further characterize the therapeutic role of IFN-gamma in host defense against intracellular L. donovani, the efficacy of IFN-gamma delivered by gene transfer was tested. One week after infection, normal and IFN-gamma gene-disrupted (GKO) BALB/c mice were injected with an IFN-gamma gene-bearing mammalian expression plasmid (pIFN). Plasmid-specific IFN-gamma transcripts were detected in liver and spleen. Where

Taenia saginata is a medically and economically important cestode parasite. Infection with the cysticercus larval stage in cattle causes economic loss in the beef meat industry. A practical vaccine to prevent infection with the parasite in cattle would be valuable and would assist in control of transmission of the parasite to humans, the obligate definitive host. Here we use recombinant DNA techniques to clone oncosphere antigens of T. saginata and use the recombinant antigens in vaccine trials in cattle. Vaccination with a combination of two antigens, designated TSA-9 and TSA-18, induced up t
