A food-borne outbreak with about 200 Salmonella Umbilo cases occurred mainly between July and September 2024 in several European countries. Collaborative work between outbreak teams in Germany, Austria and Denmark, including epidemiological and microbiological investigations, allowed to rapidly identify rocket salad as the likely infection vehicle. Salmonella Umbilo was detected in rocket salad, and later in baby spinach. The food isolates and clinical outbreak strain were genetically closely related. Both food items originated from the same company in Italy.

The Perceval sutureless valve (Corcym, Saluggia, Italy) has been effectively adopted by surgeons for the treatment of degenerative aortic valve stenosis. Its simplified true sutureless implantation technique has proven useful for minimally invasive cases, but the use of Perceval as part of more complex root replacement has not previously been described. We present a novel technical modification to the manufactured biologic Bentall, called the sutureless biological Bentall. This technique allows for a true modular valve-conduit construction that will simplify future reintervention.

Two cases of imported visceral leishmaniasis are described. The first patient was a 32-year-old Czech man who developed leishmaniasis 5 months after a holiday in Italy (Bibione). The second patient was a 62-year-old Czech man who developed leishmaniasis 18 months after visiting Croatia (Makarska); the disease began after a course of chemotherapy due to metastasizing testicular tumor. Both patients were successfully treated with amphotericin B lipid complex (Abelcet). Difficulties in establishing the correct diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis are discussed.

At various clinics of IRCCS S. Matteo Hospital, Pavia, Italy, 269 blood cultures recovered from immunocompromised patients over 4 years have been examined mycologically. Of the 269 cultures, 101 were from HIV-infected patients and five were from cardiac transplant recipients. Of the total examined 96 blood cultures were positive (36%). The most frequent genus was Candida: C. albicans (48%), C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis (8% each), C. glabrata and C. guillermondii (3% each). Cryptococcus neoformans was detected in 21 patients (22%).

We conducted an observational study to assess the impact of COVID-19 emergency on management and outcomes of patients with Fabry disease referring to our Center in Naples, Italy. No patient of the 129 included reported suspected symptoms; 3 isolated themselves in auto-quarantine for flu-like symptoms. All treated patients regularly continued their therapies; 8 missed one infusion: 3 for self-isolation with 2 relatives, and 3 refused to receive nurse at home. All elective procedures were deferred and telemedicine was adopted.

The dissolved gaseous mercury concentration and mercury degassing rate have been measured in a marine area polluted by a chlor-alkali plant (Rosignano Solvay, Italy), which uses mercury in chlorine production. During the summer the DGM concentration (130 pg l(-1)) and the evasional flux (14 ng m(-2) h(-1)) were 3-4 times higher than those measured at the control stations. A seasonal behaviour has been highlighted at all the sampling sites, with minimum levels in the winter.

West Nile virus causes sporadic cases and outbreaks of human and equine disease in Europe (western Mediterranean and southern Russia in 1962-64, Belarus and Ukraine in the 1970s and 1980s, Romania in 1996-97, Czechland in 1997, and Italy in 1998). Environmental factors, including human activities, that enhance population densities of vector mosquitoes (heavy rains followed by floods, irrigation, higher than usual temperature, or formation of ecologic niches that enable mass breeding of mosquitoes) could increase the incidence of West Nile fever.

Candidozyma (Candida) auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen of growing concern. We report the first isolation of C. auris in a domestic cat in Italy. The yeast was repeatedly recovered from feces over six months, suggesting persistent intestinal colonization. Isolation occurred during and after immunosuppressive treatment for eosinophilic granuloma complex. Antifungal susceptibility testing revealed resistance to azoles, amphotericin B and capsofungin.
